Newbie training

Hi all, im hoping to join the british army but at the moment i cant even run for 1minute let alone a 1.5 mile really i need to be doing 1.5mile in 9mins that my aim.. plus i need to build abit of muscle .. can any of you give me some tips etc

Thanks MarkB

You don't want too much muscle, that could slow you down. Honestly, best way to get better at running is to just keep doing it.

yeh but cause i cant run for longer than a few minutes sometimes i think it feels pointless and im not gonna get anywhere just walking for 20 odd mins

When I started working out I was only able to be on the elliptical for a minute and a half, with no resistance. Now I do half an hour with a resistance at lvl 10 (of 15), as well as indoor cycling classes and the like. It can be done, and you can do it if you set your mind to it.

I'd suggest setting a goal time you wish to accomplish (20 minutes for example) and then run for a period of time and then walk for a period of time. Repeat this process until the total time is up and gradually try and increase your running intervals while decreasing the walking ones.

Most importantly just keep going for the total time and don't give up.

MarkB, 1.5 miles in 9 minutes is a very lofty goal for prior to boot camp. I can't be sure, but my guess is that they start you out at about 18 mins for 1.5 miles (which is so easy, you could speed walk your way there)... and if you can't do that, they will place you in a physical conditioning platoon for a period of time until you can pass the entrance PT test, or 8 weeks (after which you would be discharged if you could not pass the PT test). At least that's the way it was in the USMC.

To get a little bit scientific, most people walk at about 2.5 mph, which would be a 36 minute 1.5 mi. If you speedwalk or jog, you can make 5-6 mph, or 18 minute 1.5 mi. To get to a 9 minute 1.5 mi, you have to run hard at 10 mph for 9 minutes. That's pretty difficult if you don't have the benefit of a few month's of boot camp to help you out.

I'm not trying to discourage you with this... but maybe your first goal should be an 18 minute 1.5 mi... then start shaving a minute off your time each week until you reach your goal. In the meantime, start walking, or jogging very very frequently, and for at least 2 miles. The more cardio you do, the easier it is.
