Hello everyone

My name is Dan, I'm 21 and blessed with the body fat of 2 people. I wasn't always fat, but I was always bulky. In comp I used to lift 100-110kgs on a bench, and I remember being around the 105-110kgs mark in weight too. Now I am (correct as of 16:50 today) 247lbs! which is nearly the same as I was when i was in school, BUT, I was FAR fitter and stronger back then :(

My heaviest weight was around 320 lbs when I was 19. I quickly changed my diet then and got my weight to 280 ish and stayed there for a while. I was happy with the way I looked.

Now, I want to change. I do not want to be the fat guy any more, I want to be the average healthy person, the person who can feel confident in himself when speaking to, not only women I find attractive, but people who I meet through Uni, work and friends.

I am not doing this for a girl, at least I wasn't originally, but it sure will help in building confidence for me to get the courage to do something with my self and my life.

Welcome to the forum Dan.

You have come to a great place for the information that you will need to improve your shape and give you more confidence about your appearance.

You already know that exercise is important - but it is still well worth you reading the sticky threads in the exercise section.

Nutrition is also vital. Like a car - we cannot perform well unless we have the right fuel. That is why you need to study the sticky threads in the nutrition section too.

Get a free account from and set up your profile information. Then log your food and exercise and you will see the calorie balance. This is what determines whether you deserve to lose (or gain) weight... Fitday also breaks down your food into the different nutritional components so that you can check that you are getting the right amount of protein, fibre, healthy fats, calcium not to mention all sorts of vitamins. It allows you to apply the stuff that you have learnt in the nutrition section.

Really all that you need else is the motivation to see the task through. I suggest that you start a diary and see who visits and visit them back in their diaries. You could visit a few diaries yourself and leave a message. This is the way that we make friends. We also make friends by joining in challenges and clubs and posting there. Generally people get more out of the forum by posting more... When things get tough - it is often our friends that see us through.

Good luck in your project.

I agree with the diary, as far as exercise goes, having lost 129 pounds myself, I have discovered that it is only a small portion, maybe twenty percent of the whole process of losing the weight you want to that allows you to become the happier you. It is all about nutrition and the type foods you eat. First open your hand and look at your palm. See it? Good. That is you measuring cup. If what you eat is beyond that size, put it back. Second eat foods that fill you up, primarily proteins. For me I went with meats and fresh vegetables. I cut out breads, unless they were sprouted wheat or real ryes, and, for the most part I have cut out all can goods, for one specific reason, everyone one of them, no matter if it is canned beets, or Beefaroni has corn syrup in them. Canned foods are designed to make you hungry by filling you with sugars that you do not need. Corn syrup is a sugar. Just by doing that I noticed a big difference in my weight. And Finally, eat your Breakfast. Eat a protein based breakfast such as two Eggs, I prefer mine poached, and three pieces of regular bacon, I like mine cooked in my George Foreman electric grill because it drains the excess fat away from the meat. Exercise in moderation, I walk about five miles every day and I take my time doing it, enjoying what I see along the way. Eat in moderation, do not starve yourself, this is not punishment, it is a joyful journey to finding the self that makes you happiest. The final thing that I found really works for me, is my just before I go to bed night treat, three walnuts. Why three, I do not know, but that amount of walnuts makes me feel good before I go to bed. Best wishes and good luck on your Journey. :) We're rooting for you.

I feel obliged to add that I tried losing weight many many times when I was a big person by addressing calories alone (no exercise) and nothing ever worked.

While nutrition is vital - I believe that anyone who did not incorporate exercise would put themselves at a major disadvantage regarding
a/them ever getting to goal
b/them maintaining that goal weight and
c/looking as good as possible at that goal weight (toning counts!).
