Newbie Needs Help With Evil Plateau

Hi all!

So I've been going to the gym Monday thru Friday every week since January 15th. I do one hour of cardio and a half hour of weights with my trainer every Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. On Monday and Friday I do an hour of cardio. I have only lost 10 lbs. since. (I'm 5'4; down to 170 from 180).

I'm working out pretty hard. My heart rate varies from approx. 150 to 175 depending on the intensity level I have set. I sweat immensely (it's gross haha). I'd say I burn at least 500 calories every day I go to the gym.

My diet is high in protein as my trainer suggests. I have a protein bar before working out and a protein shake after working out. I eat my morning oatmeal, my Lean Cuisine or SmartOnes at lunch, and chicken breast with salad for dinner.

What in the world am I doing wrong? This is getting super frustrating!!! HELP!!!

Yes

you're doing the right way.. protein can build muscles.. that's the best.. you can have frustrations at first but after 6 months you can surely find the better result.. Coz it's the time that muscles would activate more..:sifone:

You give the absolute worst advice I've seen from a trainer to date.

Good for you.

To the OP, what's your caloric intake look like, do you know? How long has your weight been stagnant? What sort of weight lifting routine does your 'trainer' (see above 'trainer' to understand why I put quotes around that label) have you doing? How consistent are you with the foods that you eat? And what are your stats?

I'm deferring to Steve, I'm sure he'll let me know if I'm spouting off nonsense but...

I'd suggest changing some of the steady state cardio to interval sessions. Or how about (if your trainer is not having you do this already) switching to some type of circuit training with the weights.

If you've been doing the same thing for two months and not increasing intensity (adding reps or increasing weight) your body may have become acclimated to the workouts and it isn't getting pushed enough to lose any more weight.

Just my 2 cents (and with today's exchange rate, that's not worth much)

My caloric intake is most likely around 1200 to 1300 a day. My BMR is approx. 1500. I feel like I may not be eating enough? But I am not hungry since I snack on almonds or fruit during the day. I've been on this plateau for about 3 to 4 weeks now. The weight loss I've experienced was all within the first month. I am doing circuit training with increased weight/less reps sets. She'll have me do three sets. First set will have low weight and more reps, second set will have more weight and less reps, and so on.

I have tried interval training on the elliptical or treadmill. I'll do 20 minutes at a high intensity level one day and 40 minutes at a low intensity level another. I try to switch it up. Do you suggest that I should stick to one type of cardio per week? Right now I do the bike, treadmill, and elliptical everyday.

It's strange to me how I can do absolutely nothing and still maintain my weight by just eating right. Doesn't make sense how I throw exercise into the equation and get the same result.....
