Newbie dilemma? ..."Scale mentality"? ...I'm not even sure what to call it?

Thanks, Louise. What a good point. :)

AFirst of all.... wonderful name. :) My four year old's name is Evelyn. Evey for short. :)

Second... the scale. Doctors' scales aren't always calibrated correctly. Plus, if you ate or drank anything, walked around beforehand (water weight from activity,) etc... your weight will fluctuate. I have made it a rule to only weight myself after a good sleep. It is the most accurate weight, but also the most consistent. Seriously. Weight yourself after you first wake up. Then, weigh yourself after dinner. There could be a 2-3lbs difference! Totally crazy!

A healthy diet is really a hard thing to find. Everyone has a different opinion on healthy. Some say animal protein is vital, some say it will kill you. Some say grains are evil, some can't live without them. Don't get me started on the "evils" of cholesterol. Find what makes you feel good. I eat sensibly, but I don't deny myself. I use a phone app and website called myfitnesspal. It tells me how many calories to eat, plus has a huge database of food to help you log what you eat. I use that all of the time. I also walk whenever I can, whether it's with my dog, or I just park really far out at stores. I have a huge jug of water with me all of the time, that I consume daily. Since May, I've lost 75lbs. It hasn't always been easy, but I try to keep the mindset that once I lose the weight, I never have to look back. :)

Louise, please do not offer advice unless it is asked for. I believe Evelyn is the person who has asked for support in this thread. People are members of this site for a range of reasons. Some to lose weight, some to learn new information and some to provide advice when asked. I don't need to lose weight and have a very disciplined diet and exercise programme. And, although I am willing to learn, I am very selective about who I listen to on this site. There are, and were, some excellent experts/advisors on this site. Unfortunately many of them seem AWOL at the moment. But you have no credibilty with me on this site so please do not offer me any advice. Regards, Sue

And the rest of the post is wrongly harsh. If Spinner somehow really did think that Louise's advice was meant for her, she could much more easily have just ignored it.

Whatever is going on here, I wish it weren't going on in a thread I started.

Hey Louise :)

Exactly. Often X's when talking to somebody who hasn't seen me since my body swap, the thought will come up > ".....and I bet you will live a lot longer now, too"...... To which I usually just have to chuckle :)

Their is no such thing as life insurance !

I don't care how healthy you are, when your numbers up, you had better be ready !

On the other hand, whether I have 1 more year, or 40 more years, either way, my time left on this earth will be unbelievably better in the shape I am now, than the horrible shape I used to be in.

Peace,

Fish

To be clear, sure - I could be hit by a bus tomorrow. Or that big earthquake that the seismologists expect will hit here tonight and I will become part of an ongoing geological process. Or I could fall out of bed and hit my head on the nightstand. Anything could happen, really.

But just because I might not have a future is no reason not to make contingency plans in case I do live past tomorrow. :)

And (when I'm not flipping out over possible calibration discrepancies between my doctor's scale and my own), I'm not doing anything I don't like. No rice cakes are going to be consumed in this fitness initiative, and no calisthenics performed. No Death Aerobics led by a perkily perfect instructor with the metabolism of a hyperactive hummingbird.

I'm walking for exercise, in lovely parks and neighborhood full of tall trees and mossy verges and calling chickadees. I'm eating veggies and other foods I like (no Brussels sprouts whatsoever are to be harmed during this process - but I've got a baked yam with mango-lime-garlic dressing here, and it is not long for this world). Daily weigh-ins were never going to be part of this - and even thought Tuesday was my weekly weigh-in day, I forgot it this morning, and so now Wednesday is my weekly weigh-in day.

And since numbers are, if not of primal importance, absolutely unavoidable (and since I'm sort of a math geek), I'm planning to have some some silly fun with them:

- When my weight = 299 lbs, I'm going to go to my favorite thrift store and buy only items priced at $2.99.

- When my BMI reaches 42, I'm going treat myself to some new towels (in reference to "The Hitchhikers' Guide to the Galaxy") (toldja I was a geek :) ).

- When my fasting blood glucose in mg/dl comes up at a prime number (below 120) like 113, 109, 107, 103, 97, etc.; I'm going put "Prime Suspect" at the top of my Netflix queue.

That is, if I live that long (or put more informally, Lord willing and the crik don't rise. :) )

I just rescued a dog and named her Trillian. :)

Hello Evelyn,

I love your sense of humor and your approach. Yeah, if you're a 'numbers' person....that is such a great way to work with it.

Life is a journey...the journey is the destiny, and we should enjoy it and have fun.

Even while we are getting in shape and losing weight.

I think you're making an important point to notice for anyone else who is struggling with the process...that is to relax into it..if your plan did not work out today, try it again tomorrow.

There is so much more to us than our bodies, while we are working hard to lose weight ...love the ride...get excited about the process. The rewards are so worth it when clothes fit good and you can move around with ease.

Like Fish said:"my time left on this earth will be unbelievably better in the shape I am now, than the horrible shape I used to be in."

I feel the same way,

I work out at home everyday using a Bow flex and I walk all the time. I cannot call my walking exercise really because I am usually looking after very old and dying dogs who cannot walk fast anymore...it is more like a comfort stroll....at least I keep moving and enjoy my surroundings.

Good Luck,

Louise
