newbee with a belly

Hi all.

I'm trying to turn my life around. I'm a 31 year old male weighing 16 1/2 stone. I'm 5ft 10.

I've just started a new job that will require me to work shifts, twelve hours on days and nights. Obviously I will be getting quite alot of time off during the week and when the kids are at nursery and the wife is at work I can use my time to try and lose some weight.

I'm getting concerned that I'm getting a round and firm belly and to many chins and I'm worried that I won't be able to lose them.

I'm planning on cycling to work when on nights, which is 13 miles each way but is relatively flat and cycling is something that I enjoy, unlike running which I can't bring myself to do. I use to play alot of rugby. I could play rugby all day with no issues, but ask me to go for a run and I can run 2 or 3 miles and them give up.

I'm trying to eat healthy to. Fruit in a morning as I drive to work usually with a small sandwich for lunch and a meal on a night, usually some type of meat with veg or rice/pasta. I drink water during the day and fruit juice on a night.

Has anyone got any tips to help me lose weight please. I would love to be 14st but I seem to be struggling to first of all find motivation and also see any results.

Hope someone can help

Thanks for reading

Hi, my name is David. I think riding your bike to work is a great start. I ride my bike to the metro and back every day. It's only a mile but I have a big hill to climb going both directions. One thing I would recommend is try cutting the fruit juice out of your diet, a lot of times they have quite a bit of sugar in them and that wont help you trying to lose weight. Do you have a workout plan that you do on your time off? I know how rough shift work can be I did it for 6 months about 3 years ago and I never want to do it again lol

Thanks guys.

I've started now to eat porridge for breakfast, well at about 9 o'clock as that's when my first break at work is. I'm not cycling at the moment as I need to fix my bike at the weekend so with any luck I'll be cycling next week
I'm joining a gym to.

I don't have a work out plan yet, I use to go to the gym with a pro rugby league player a few years ago and he showed me some great exercises so I will probably stick to that.

I have two young children and I just want to be fit for them, healthy heart etc with less risk of diabetes etc

Children are a great motivator for getting fit, I'm glad to hear that you are choosing a healthier lifestyle. I have a 7 month old daughter and I want to be in shape so when she starts running around I can keep up with her. Do you have a Facebook? You should add me on there, I post the occasional workout tips and help with keeping people motivated. If you want I can tell you how to find me on there.
