Hello from Ohio,

I stepped on the scale the other day and the number hit me, like a slap in the face. I am over weight and don't want to hit the obese range. All my life, I have battled to keep my weight down, but growing up, all i had to look up to, was my family...and they aren't healthy people.
I just want to loose enough weight to put me closer to a healthy weight. I enjoy working out, but it gets so expensive, who really has the money in this economy, to do it.

I'm 18 years old, almost 155 lbs, and I need to be healthy!

Good luck with the weight loss. Going on the scale (for the first time in years!) was like a huge slap in the face to me as well which is what's making me start my weight loss journey though I have about 100 to lose.

Welcome my fellow Ohioan.

155 lbs? How tall are you? I mean, 155 lbs isn't a lot, in my opinion.

between 5'5'' and 5'7'' it all depends on how long it has been since i have been to the chiropractor. My back is really messed up. I just want to keep myself out of the overweight/obese range and possibly loose this gut and love handles i have going on.

Using 5' 6" as your height, according to the BMI chart (which I find to be completely unrealistic, as it basically claims that almost everybody is a fat piece of crap), you have a BMI of 25. That means you are literally .1 away from having a completely normal and healthy BMI. I don't think you should worry about being obese, because you are faaaaaaaaaar from it. Seriously, faaaaaaaaaar from it.

I am 19, about 5'5" and started at 155 and I was JUST "overweight" for my BMI but I knew that if I didn't try to lose weight, I would just keep gaining. So I may not have been HUUUUGE but now that I have lost 20 pounds, my body looks healthy and way better than before. Some people can carry 155 pounds just fine, others can't. It really just depends on your body type.

Check out my diary if you want some help getting started, since we are similar in age height and starting weight, maybe I can be of some help to you...

Thanks Sarah.
Thats exactly what I am afraid of. Obesity runs in my family and to be honest, i love food. who doesn't?
I feel like i'm on the edge and every bite pushes me closer.
Thanks again sarah, it's nice to know someone else out there has been in my shoes and over came the jump.

Hi and welcome. It's good that you take notice of things NOW rather than waiting until you have 20 or 50 or more pounds to lose. If I had paid attention when I was only a few pounds overweight, I wouldn't have had the struggle I've had. :)

Here are my thoughts for you:
The first thing I'd suggest is registering for a free account on FitDay - Free Weight Loss and Diet Journal or Calorie Counter, Diet Tracking, Food Journal, Nutrition Facts at The Daily Plate and starting to log your food. This will let you see how many calories you're eating and how your nutrition levels are breaking down. Once you know that, you'll be able to see more clearly where you can make adjustments, cut back, change your nutrition, etc.

The next thing I'd suggest is checking out the various sticky posts in the exercise area of the forum (Weight Loss Through Exercise - Weight Loss Forum). There are some very good posts on exercise, both cardio/aerobic and on incorporating weight lifting into your exercise plans. The one titled "The Conceptual Side of Weight Lifting" is particularly good.

I'd also suggest starting a diary in the weight loss diary area (Weight Loss Diary - Weight Loss Forum) as well as reading and participating in other diaries. This is a good way to make updates to your progress and to get support from others. It helps to find the diaries of people who have successfully lost weight (or are losing weight) and reading through them as well. Following the diaries of those who have been successful is both inspiring and informative.

Finally, I'd say you should read as much as you can of the posts on the board, especially anything that's marked "sticky". There is a ton of good information around here and a lot of times questions that new folks have has already been answered very thoroughly - so do take the time to look around and read. :)

Hope that helps you to get started.
