New. =)

Heylo everyone, my name's Emma and I'm obviously new to all of this. I'm 178 pounds/12 stone 10 pounds and am a 5'6, 18 year old female. I've been struggling with my weight ever since I was a very young teenager. I now realise that back then I didn't have a problem at all! I was slim and reasonably fit but I just didn't feel it and didn't see that when I looked in the mirror. Unfortunately I have always despised exercise with a passion and had a problem with consuming far too much food and it's catching up with me. I use food as a comfort and I binge and over eat all day everyday.

The past week I've cut my calories down to around a 1000 every day, I've gone for a long walk every day and yet I've managed to PUT ON weight. This frustrated me terribly and I binged again; I also read an article about something called the "Extreme Fat Smash Diet" I'm not sure if anyone else has heard of this it apparently guarantees that you will lose 12 pounds in 3 weeks if you stick to the regime. I looked at what you had to eat and how much you had to exercise and I just thought "if that's the only way I'm going to be able to lose weight then it just isn't going to happen."

So, I'm back to square one and I stumbled across this site and thought it might be a great way to gain some ideas, information and encouragement. Thank you to anyone who takes the time to read. :)

Hi Emma, and welcome.

Don't be put off by putting on weight in your first week. Your weight fluctuates all the time depending on how much food and water your body is carrying, and is affected by lots of things, including your time of the month, how much salt you've eaten, and even the time of day when you weigh yourself. Most people (I think) weigh themselves in the morning before breakfast. To get the most accurate results, I get up, go to the bathroom, and then weigh myself while I'm still in my pyjamas. I weigh myself daily but average out the results over the week to try to eliminate some of the daily fluctuation, some people here weigh weekly, and some weigh less often, such as monthly.

If I were you, I wouldn't cut right down to 1000 calories a day. Take a look at this post by Steve, which explains why. There's also lots of other useful links in the Words of Wisdom thread that will help you to make the best choices about how to lose that weight.

Congratulations on making the very hard decision to start losing that weight. Have you set yourself a goal weight or size to give you something positive to aim for?

Thanks for your reply! I definitely think your right about not cutting my calories down so low, I'm just about to give that article a read. Do you think it matters so much what I eat if my calories are below a certain level?

I'm hoping to lose about 40 pounds, which sounds like such a huge task to me!

As long as you eat healthy foods and set yourself realistic goals it should be OK. If you are highly motivated and dedicated you should be able to achieve your goal relatively quickly.
