New Year, new habits

Some motivation on how much I've lost.

You entered 31 pounds (14 kilograms).

31 pounds is the average weight of a 3-year old boy.

How Much Fuel Is That?

To lose that amount of fat would mean to burn 108,500 calories or 453,964 KiloJoules! That is the equivalent of 3.53 gallons of gasoline. Humans, however, are far more efficient than cars, getting about 912 "miles to the gallon". If you could dump this many calories into the tank of a Honda Civic, you would be able to drive it about 119 miles before running out of gas!

Let's see how your goal would convert to other forms of fuel. 108,500 calories is equivalent to:

* 3.53 gallons of gasoline, or
* 38.84 pounds of coal, or
* 53.84 pounds of oven-dried wood, or
* 4.73 gallons of propane

This amount of energy would ...

* Brew about 303 pots of coffee, or
* Light a 60-watt light bulb for 2,102 hours ( 88 days = 0.23 years)

Cutting 108,500 calories is the same as saying "no" to:

* 1,356 apples, or
* 1,085 bananas, or
* 6,382 cups of cabbage (whew!), or
* 748 baked potatoes, or
* 1,356 large eggs, or
* 904 cups of 2% milk, or
* 78 pounds of ground beef, or
* 1,247 glasses of wine, or
* 336 Snickers bars, or
* 452 Clif Bars ( 603 Luna Bars), or
* 781 cans of Coke, or
* 638 pints of Guinness beer, or
* 221 Big Macs, or
* 211 Quarter Pounders with Cheese, or
* 155 Whoppers, or
* 329 Subway 6" Oven Roasted Chicken Breast sandwiches, or
* 638 Taco Bell crunchy tacos, or
* 462 slices of pepperoni pizza from Pizza Hut

What it Takes to Burn 108,500 Calories

To burn 108,500 calories, a 190 pound male would have to:

* Backpack for 180 hours (7 days) nonstop, or
* Walk for 416 hours (17 days) at 3 mph straight, or
* Walk 1,247 miles (779 kilometers), or
* Bike for 314 hours (13 days) at 10 mph, or
* Bike 3,145 miles (1,966 kilometers), or
* Play basketball nonstop for 173 hours 7 days), or
* Play billiards for 502 hours (21 days), or
* Go bowling for 419 hours (17 days), or
* Stay on the golf course for 314 hours (13 days), or
* Spend 140 hours (6 days) playing competitive football, or
* Jump rope for 132 hours (6 days) straight!

You would have to walk the length of England about 2.13 times to burn 108,500 calories.

photos? not of me - of Claire from steps from the daily mail at 15st and 10.5 st. I actually think I looked a bit skinnier at 15 st (am an inch taller) but think I'd be happy to look like that at 10.5 stone (basically 150 pounds).

Today is the first day I think I really fell off the diet.

I went out for lunch with some colleagues and couldn't find anything good. Ended up ordering chicken and chips (which for me is fine because I assume about 1200 cal for it). Only it turned out to be a chicken ciabatta with chips. Cals? God knows! I wasn't too distressed as I left some of the chips and food but my stomach must have shrunk because I felt sick all afternoon. Then I came home and ate dinner (250) because I was hungry! But then I also started eating some of my snacks and just didn't stop! I'm lucky I only buy diet things in because I'm estimating about 300 cal of snacks. Anyway I'm on the fence about whether or not to pare down my food for the rest of the week or just write it off altogether. I hate feeling 'under' and cutting to unsustainably low amounts.

I'm gonna just write this off and do some exercise and start tomorrow fresh. I don't wanna get crazy. I'm working hard and losing and I don't keep huge amounts of crap in the house so I can't binge to thousands and thousands which is good.

Haven't been on my post for the week and that's because after last Wednesday I decided to eat at maintenance for the week. Basically I had that event and then two others on Friday and Sunday and one today which all involved eating/drinking a lot. Friday was a Brazilian cocktail party which I knew would be calorie suicide. Sunday was a dinner party which I knew I'd have to eat and today is a wine tasting event. I just thought - I'm half way through the weight loss. I've done really well. I've been dieting for nearly 3 months. Instead of me trying to undereat and claw back cals here or there for the next two weeks, let me just eat at maintenance for a week and then begin in earnest this week. After the first day my weight shot up to like 185 pounds but I drank lots of water in between everything and it's come back down to 181.4 I think it was this morning. I'm not going to stress the 0.2 change but I will begin again tomorrow.

I hope this was the right thing to do but I have to trust myself and I feel like I've earned a week off. It was good because I didn't have to be really stresed this week and I didn't really overeat on food - though I basically wasted a ton of calories on alcohol.

I think that sounds fine. You know your body better than anyone and it's important to trust yourself and stand behind all the decisions you make :) Well done to being half way there, I bet it's a wonderful feeling. Can't wait til I'm there! It's been very slow for me this last month. Need to up my game!!

I think taking a week off is a nice way to reward yourself for getting half way there. Especially when you know it's going to be a calorie heavy week.

Hi whiskeytangofox...was just getting updated on your post. I would have done the same thing, just wrote the week off and started fresh.

You have done so well so far, so definately don't stress about the week off.

I was reading your blog about sizes. I believe 1 size is 12 lb. So for every 12lb you lose you should be able to go down 1 size.

My goal in the end is 135lb. I know with my lifestyle that is probably NOT going to be maitainable. I can get down to 135lb, but will prob try to maintain 145lb size 10-12. I am 5"4' tall. (I enjoy having a beer here and there and I love my desserts....)

My weight loss process has been very slow. The beginning of Feb I weighed 189lb. The end of March I weigh 180.6. When I started this I was determined to lose 2 lb per week. When I saw that I could only have approx 1200 cal a day to lose 2 lb per week...I had to come back to reality. So now instead of dieting I think of it as a lifestyle choice. I can't live off celery sticks, chicken breast and garden salads every day...LOL So now I eat what I want just in moderation.

I look forward to your blogs, and want to say thanks for the motivation you give me. GO SILVER TEAM!!!

Hey hun!

Sorry I've been off the blog for so long. Some real family issues came up in the last week and I've had to deal with that - I'll explain in a later post. But I have pretty much stayed on the wagon and I feel renewed by having a week off to eat some of the things I've been missing.

Anyway I completely agree about the weight loss - the reality of Biggest Loser type loss is a really reduced quality of life I think. I could spend 3 weeks and lose 10 pounds like that but I couldn't spend 5 months living like that. Better to just lose slower.

But to be more positive - every pound is not just another pound lost, it's a pound not gained and another day of a great routine. Also you have to remember - what is 'fast' and what is 'slow'? Sometimes, even for the internal deadlines that we set for ourselves, our expectations are too high. For me I am moving end of August abroad and would like to lose the weight before then. I have 5 months left to lose and 6 pounds a month would get me to my target weight. That's why I'm working hard but refusing to stress about not losing '3/4 pounds a week'. It'll come off at the right time.

It's crazy because in the media everyone is 8 stone, 7 stone etc. No one is 9 stone or even 10 stone but I honestly think I'd have the craziest lollipop head at 8 stone, even 9 stone. I can't imagine going much below 10 stone, if any at all.

But maybe they are lying or just very short? I mean Kirsty Alley reckoned she was 200 pounds at her heaviest which is such crap. She was 5'7''. She had to be at least 250 pounds. At least. The only person being honest is probably Beyonce who said she lost 70 pounds to her current weight. And she is apparently very short.

It's just slightly insane when you read a magazine and someone says they are 7.5 stone. I'm not saying magazines have to stop printing that but maybe they should note the height as well? If someone is 5'2'' or 5'3'' then fine. But someone who is 5'5 , 5'6'' or 5'7'' that is a BMI of 16 - 17.

I think it depends on how tall you are and how your body is made up. I'm 5'4 119 pounds and a size 8. I still have excess weight around my hips and stomach because for me 112 pounds is my ideal weight.

Other people that are taller and have more muscle are in a size 8 at 130 pounds.

Measuring in pounds really IS just a number. If you look good and have a low amount of body fat it doesnt really matter if you are 100 pounds or 150.

Just saying Hi! Hope your week is going good, mine is kind of up and down.

I was on the computer looking at weight loss articles this a.m. I have been seeing alot about acai berry...thinking about trying it. I have never been one for quick weight loss remedies as I know they usually only work for a short period of time, and I want this for life. As summer is soon approaching I am starting to panic. What's your opinion?

Take care, Monique

Ok so I decided I am not going to try the acai berry...what was I thinking...LOL
I have had a really bad weekend though...ate badly, had treats, no exercise...*urgh* I need to get remotivated, sorry for letting you down this week. Hope your having a good week.

I actually lost a little bit this week...weighed in at 180.8. I couldn't believe it after the week I had. So I was happy, hope you had a good week.

Hey stranger...hope everything is ok... I am having a really hard time to stay motivated right now. Hope to hear from you soon. If you've fallen off the wagon, don't worry we can get back on together. Take care.
