New to here trying to lose some lbs!

Hi my name is joey. Im 17 and im looking to loose some weight. Ive been running and exercising quite a bit lately. I played football and when i quit i gained some extra weight i want to get rid of. I am 6'1" and I weigh 230. I am strong for my build. I have quite a bit of muscle but i dont really have much defenition. My goal is to get to 200-210 and tone my body up. Ive joined a local gym and i started working out there about a month ago. I can already tell results. I start my workout by running on a treadmill for .5 mile at 8 mph then i work out everything such as legs, arms, chest etc and finish by running another .5 mile. My friend gave me some stuff from gnc called weight gainer. It has alot of carbs and some protien. I was wondering if I should take this stuff and when? any other advice is appreciated. I am also looking to get some supplements such as protien and maybe some diet help. Thanks.
 
the typical weight gainer gets its calories from whey protein and sugar, maltodextrin usually. this would be decent to take after a workout.

a protein powder can be good to take if you have trouble eating enough protein each day. other worthwhile choices are a multi-vitamin/minerals and a EFA supplement (fish or flax oil)

but first and foremost should be good meal plan consisting of great solid food choices. this list can help you out

split your meals up into 5-6 a day roughly 3 hours apart from each other. base each meal off a protein source followed by good carbs and fats or one or the other. :)
 
you should also break up you muscle groups so they each have a time to rest while your working another part of your body. like do arms one day then the next do chest and back etc... your muscles can only grow while they are resting
