the humiliation of a weight loss class

I recommend if you are scared of a weight loss class that you re-evaluate who you are trying to impress. The mental/psychological issues that come with a desire to lose weight will impede you as much as the physical issues.

Would you be willing to join a gym?
If not, would you be willing to purchase free weights?
Are you willing to clean up your diet?

things like that will help lots!

I understand your not being ready to do the public thing.

I suggest you just get moving at home & do what you can. Dance around the house, do laps from one end of the house to the other, DVDs, maybe some weights or jump rope. One of the best things I did was get a pedometer. Track the number of steps walked per day & then try to up it. Course it burns more calories to actually workout a faster pace than just the walking through out the day, but its another component to add in that has helped me stay motivated.

It really has helped me to track calories & what I am eating. Its true that calories are what matter, whether it is those that are being burned or consumed. To lose you need to either burn more or consume less than your body needs. I heard one statistic that to lose weight, the way you eat contributes to like 80% of your success. I use Sparkpeople.com to track what I am eat through the day. When you know what you are eating you can see how you can improve.

Good luck & glad you found this site.

I totally agree with the public thing. I would be mortified to go to a gym right now! Moongodess had some good ideas for around the house. I know it's kind of public but I find walking outside really clears you mind and after a week or so you get over the feeling that everyone is peeking out the windows at you. Just imagine what they will be saying when you start shedding those pounds!!:jump:

Congrats on joining us you will find lots of great encouragement here. I cannot tell you what a difference it has made in my motivation and commitment. Welcome--stop by the diaries for great inspiration.

I started out doing workouts at home, finding videos - either renting them from the library or buying them. Then moving on from there.

There are lots of things to try before moving on to a public class. The only public class I ever took was martial arts - and even though I had lost 45 lbs at the time, I kept thinking of myself as the "fat old lady". We really need to get to a good point where we can recognize our achievements no matter how small.

Take things one step at a time, and they will all eventually fall into place.

Good luck!

Thanks for the advice, it was most helpful. Joined a gym and did my first session today suprisingly i rather enjoyed it. May be an uphill struggle but I am willing to give my full commitment to it. So watch this space for updates

Cool about the gym! My best peep just re-joined the Y, and I'm so jealous!
