New, old and discouraged

Hello! I'm new here. I've been reading a lot, and you are all very impressive. And young and really beautiful -- I've looked at some of the pictures.

I'm over 55, and I'll never be beautiful, and though I've lost some weight, (two dress sizes, and it does feel good) I have just an enormous amount still to go. (I weigh 234 pounds.) And I'm feeling, what's the point? And it takes me so long to lose even a few pounds, the way I'm going, I'll be sixty before I look even human. And no chance to look good. :(

Please, is there anyone out there who's lost weight at this sort of age?

Even though I havent and I am not even over 20 =D I think its still worth feeling great and loving yourself. Honestly it will probably give you another couple years if you continue to diet. Even if im no expert I don't think you should be discouraged, your never to old to be healthy and happy :).

IMO, age should not be a problem at all when it comes to keeping your weight at a healthy level. When you are healthy, you will look good. You are not dieting for others right? Just do whatever you think is the best for your body. Even though you might only be reaching a healthy weight at 60, you can still be a hot grandma plus, just like the other who have responded earlier, you might be able to live longer and healthier.

Good luck with the weight losing thingy :)

Thank you both! I've already lost a pound, since I registered. :)

How do I get one of those weight-loss measures that people have on their posts?

Age definitely doesn't have anything to do with it. Losing the weight will make YOU feel better, and more healthy, and YOU are the only person that counts! And you can do it!! :)

I'm 'only' 33, but I've seen my mom lose weight over the past 2 years. She's 54, and yes, she lost it more slowly that me for example, but she lost it, and she looks fab now!! She isn't a model or anything by any means, but she looks in good shape, and she looks happy and content with herself, which is the main thing!

Believe me, it's worth sticking with it! Personally, I know I will never be 'beautiful' or anything like that, but at least I will be healthier, and be able to do all the things I could never do because of my weight before (like tying my shoe laces without getting out of breath and stuff like that). So, it's well worth the effort!

As for the weight tracking thingie....you can get one at , they are really easy to set up!

Oh, and did I say Welcome to the Forums? It's great to have you here!! :waving:

Thanks heaps, San! A real-life example (your mother) is really encouraging to hear about. And thanks, too, for the tip about where to find the measuring graphic -- I'll go now and see if I can sort one out. :)

Girl! Age ain't nothin' but a number... You're only as old as you feel... Age is an issue of mind over matter; if you don't mind, it doesn't matter... Wrinkles should merely indicate where smiles have been... Youth is a wonderful thing, what a crime to waste it on children.... need I go on?! :) 55 is still YOUNG! And, at the risk of sounding just like my mom here, you're going to be sixty in 5 years REGARDLESS so you might as well be the most healthy and beautiful 60 year old that YOU can be! Welcome to the forum Noparsnips! It's nice to have you here! :D

Thanks, Paula!! I like that line about going to be sixty regardless!! Okay -- six pounds down by November!!!

(and thanks for the welcome! :) )

Yay! Six pounds is a very reachable goal! :D

BTW, I was just in the newcomers section and stumbled on Karlene. She is about your age and trying to lose weight too... Maybe you can look her up. :)

Sixty is the new forty...

I'm 43, have adult children, blah, blah, blah...

Dammit, I don't feel that old!! Don't worry about age, I regularly get my butt handed to me when I'm cycling by a friend that I ride with. He's 66 y/o, retired, and was substantially overweight when we met 8 years ago at work. He's now 6'4" and about 220lbs and regularly does 30-50 mile bike rides.

It's about how YOU feel about yourself.

"the new forty"?? I could handle that!! Thanks, reluctantcabbie! :)

The bike-riding story is very impressive. In a few months, I'd like to be up to trying that -- well, trying bike-riding, anyway!

Bike riding, skipping, hoola hoop.... heck, let's do it all! My knees remind me I am over 50 but my head still thinks I'm 29 :smilielol5: I got your message but I'm under my posting limit to reply so don't think I am ignoring you. I love your idea. Have you walked today? Let's not let our age slow us down. I plan on being in the pool with my grandaughter this coming summer, in a suit and in public

Hey Noparsnips, droppin' in to say hi! You should really start a diary in the Weight Loss Diary section... they are great to keep track of diet, training, feelings, etc... and to just post about day to day life! Hope you're doing well! :D

Whoaaaa wait a minute here!

55 is old ?? No it can't be !!

I'm 60 and I'm still thinking about "growing up".

Welcome to the forum. This is a great community. It's more than that. It is family.

You can do anything that you want. Tell yourself that - all day long.
Check in with your new family everyday even if just for a few minutes.

Keep the faith baby.

All blessings to you.

Thanks, PaulaB and thin-is-in! I did think about starting a diary, Paula - - I've got a thing or two to sort on the domestic front first, though...

And thin-is-in, it turns out that 60 is the new forty (reluctantcabbie told me!) which makes me... ooohhh... 35!!!!! :)

Okay, I'm back (after domestic busy-ness took me away) and I'm ready to start that diary!

Heading over to the diary section now. :)

And back again, laughing at myself -- I can't figure out how to start a new thread over there! But it was easy here? I wonder what I'm doing wrong? :)

and with thanks to reluctantcabbie, my new diary is up ... I called it "Give-it-a-go diary", because that's what I'm doing -- giving it a go, having a try...
