Hi guys :)

My names Anna, I'm 21 (female, obviously!) and I weigh about 14 stone. I'm only 5'5, and my weight has slowly been climbing in the past year from a nice 12 stone to this. I have horrible tummy flab, massive 46 inch hips (even though my hips are super-large when I'm toned.) and a double chin with wibbly arms.

I smoke, I don't like the taste of water and I suffer from anxiety which means gyms are problem for me!

I've cut out all the fat, sugar and over-carbs from my diet, and am sticking to lean white meat (grilled, no skins) and fresh boiled and grilled vegetables with the occasional spot of brown rice to bulk it out a little.

Now, I have a question.

Is it worth me trying to go to a gym, or simply buying a crosstrainer to use at home? I know I'll use it, because it's expensive and it's in my house and doesn't mean I have to work up the courage to go to the gym, I can do it from home!

Also, I can only do low impact for cardio, because I have screwed knees.

Any help/suggestions? :( I really need more motivation!

Hi Anna,

I defintiely think you should join the gym. I was very anxious about joining the gym at first thinking there'd be only fit people there. I was very self conscious at first as I am rather fat. I was 14 stones when I joined the gym at the beginning of April and am only 5 ft tall. After several sessions I felt comfortable and not so self conscious about going to the gym. I think that you will have more motivation going to the gym rather than exercising at home. Plus you get to use different machines. It would get boring just using one machine all the time at home.

Also I was worried about how to use the machines but the gym assistants gave me a quick guide how to use them. Also you should incorporate some resistance training (weights) into your training as this will help to burn fat quicker rather than just doing cardio.

Anyway after nearly 2 months I have lost 8lbs and am now down to 13 and 1/2 stones. Not a lot of weight loss but it's going in the right direction.

I agree with Lealing. It would definitely be a good idea to join a gym, and do resistance (weight) training.

It will definitely help you a lot, and much more than just using a cross trainer... not least to get some 'figure' and 'firmness' back.

I know it may require some courage... but hey, if you do it diligently and seriously, you'll definitely be glad with the results!

The gym is a good idea, especially if you are a person who prefers structured exercise time, or if you like having a variety of equipment and activities available. However, I lost my weight simply through walking (I worked up from 10 minutes to over an hour a day). I have recently added push-ups and jogging. Like you, I am an anxiety sufferer. I find that the walking really smoothes out my mood.

Hi inkykitty,

I also have issues with my left knee.. I run.. Not being mean, but with lots of stretching and slow steady runs example. run for 5 min and walk 1 min start with 2km then up the km every week. your body adjusts.

If you want to lose weight, its a cheap way of doing it.. Cardio is number one for burning fat and it will be everywhere. The gym you can do after. Get yourself some rubber tubing and google tubing exercise and do them at home twice a week with core exercises.

if your not able to keep up with this.. Trust me, spending money on a gym membership will be a waste of money.

Give it a try, it will be hard but push yourself for 3 weeks and you will be surprised how it will be easier after. It will be also enough time for you to see a difference in your body and that too will be a great motivation tool to keep you going.

Good luck.
