New - looking for some support!

Hey everyone,

So I've been lurking these boards for the past couple of hours and I think I want to call this place 'my home away from home'. I've been searching for the past couple of days for a good message board for weight loss that has a good team of supportive people and I think this forum looks best.

My name is Brittany (I have a dog named Bella - hence the s/n) and I am 22 years old. A little of background info on me, I didn't start gaining weight until about 5 years ago. I had major medical problems and had to undergo a few brain surgeries in the past few years. This put me in my bed or on the couch for months at a time not being able to be mobile/exercise or anything. In the past 5 years I've went from 150 lbs to 230lbs and I am extremely down on myself for it. I know that I didn't pack on the pounds on purpose but I feel like my body is ruined. I am only 5ft3 and my body looks horrid! Now that I am pain free and had the 'ok' from my doctor to start exercising I am so determined to loose the weight!

I would love to have some support of others while I start this long journey though. My husband is a great help but I think it would help me, hearing stories from others about weight loss and such. I've tried so many times to start an exercise routine but after a few days, I always end up quitting. Food really isn't my problem. I am really good at eating healthy and eating 5-6 small meals a day instead of 3 big ones. I just need that extra push to keep up with the working out.

I plan on starting a diary here so I look forward to seeing some of your comments in there..I really need some good support to start this because I get too frustrated with not seeing the scale number get smaller fast enough - then I end up quitting...so frustrating!!

Oh man, ouch to those surgeries.... I bet anything you'll be able to do it! I look forward to keeping up with how you're doing :) I totally understand how frustrating watching that scale is. I keep wanting to shoot the damn thing

Welcome to the forum.

Losing weight here is going to be easy compared to those surgeries.... I agree - Ouch!!!

Starting a diary is a good move. See who visits and visit them back and leave a message. Visit a few diaries too and leave messages. That is a great way of making friends. Joining clubs and challenges are also great for making friends.

You may be interested to know that research has shown that there really is no advantage in eating 5 or 6 meals a day compared to less. It is really what keeps you best satisfied that counts - and the sum total of calories eaten of course... Otherwise it was all a myth!

Other than that - my best advice is to read the exercise and nutrition sections. It is always important to read the sticky threads - actually throughout the forum.

Get a free account from , set up your profile information and start logging your food and your exercise. You will see your calorie balance which tells whether or not you deserve to lose weight. You will also see your food broken down into the different nutrients. You can thus make sure that you are eating enough protein, fibre, healthy fats etc - according to what you have learnt in the nutrition section.

Good luck with your project.

Hi Brittany and welcome! :)

I agree with Omega - first step is to start logging what you eat to see where you can make changes.

I'll let you know that I am 5'4" and started out at 247 - so I know exactly where you're coming from with your feelings and your goals. It can be done; I'm proof! :)

Read the sticky posts on exercise, too. There's a lot of good information on weightlifting and body weight work and cardio - what works, what doesn't, where you should focus!

Good luck to you!
