Hi I am new here...I am doing the Self.com Challenge and doing small portions diet. I wanna lose about 40-50 lbs. I am not really sure on how to use this yet, but hopefully I figure it out better. What are really good ways to lose weight quick and easy. I work alot so I really dont have alot of time to cook and workout. So any tips would be great! Thanks!!

Welcome.

I hate to be harsh, but normally whenever someone comes to a forum like this or comes to me for advice and they start the convo out with something that pretty much says, "Hey, I want to lose a lot of weight as fast as possible, however, I don't have a lot of time to dedicate to my body and health, so what can I do?" I normally turn a cheek.

I am sure you know there are no quick fixes. I suggest making the time though. I mean, what is life without your health?

Start out with a solid nutrition plan. How do you currently eat?

sorry

Sorry I didnt realize I was posting that on yours. I am just trying to figure out how to work this website, and so far I am completely lost. How do I post a thread of my own so people can reply to me? Thanks!!

Ummm, you did start your own thread. We are in it right now. :D

No need for apologies. :)

I didnt mean like lose the weight fast, but I also dont want to wait a year to lose it either. I want to lose 40-50lbs in 4-5 months, is that possible? My eating habits are horrible I admit. I drink alot of water during the day and have a can of pop at dinner, I eat tons of carbs, cheese, and starches....I just dont know what to eat and whats healthy, is just eating what i want and small portions a good idea? Thanks!

The more weight you have to lose, the easier and more of it you can expect to shed. So what do you weigh? On average, you could expect 1-3 lbs of fat loss per week. You could certainly lose more, but I wouldn't recommend. Aside from water weight, you would be catabolizing muscle which isn't the wisest thing to do.

Would cutting down on portion size work, you ask. It probably would for starters. Weight loss is dependent on energy balance. Calories are energy. If you eat more energy than your body requires, you will store the excess, read, get fat.

So, if you eat les of what you have been, sure, weight loss is possible.

I suggest counting calories though, since this way, you will know for sure which direction you are heading in. You could use something like

You say you eat primarily carbs. The funny thing is this: There is no such thing as an essential carbohydrate, only essential proteins and fats exist. Meaning, we don't even need carbs to function. That said, your diet surely needs some tweaking.

I weigh 192 and want to get down to 135, I am 5' 5''. I am doing some light exercising, not much though. I do 2 reps of 20 in situps, sqauts, lunges, pushups, etc. And take my dog on a 20 min walk, and on weekends I go hiking at a local park. And I am usually there for about a hr or two.

Right, you are doing some exercises. But as I said above, where most of your success is going to come from is your nutrition. You don't have that squared away, progress will be hard to come by.

And I would stop with the high rep stuff on the exercises. Are you only using body weight, or are you working out with weights?

The walking is good, but you have to remember that your body will eventually get used to the exercise and almost refuse to surrender any more fat for burning. After a couple weeks or so, split your exercise up into some walking, some light jogging. then encorporate more jogging as time goes on. Push yourself, but not to the point where you are discouraged to workout because it was way beyond your limits.

As for your original post, 40 pounds in 5 months is very realistic and ideal. Nutrition and exercise are not mutally exclusive events with dieting, they need to be paired to show the best results. I recommend calculating your BMR to make sure you are not undercutting your caloric intake.

congrats
