So I'm looking for some pointers on how to lose weight (seems I'm in the right place).

A little background:
In my 20s, used to be active, but I've had close to zero exercise in the last 2-3 years. Also have gained weight in said period. Now I'm trying to turn that around (and lose about 15kg). A few weeks ago I started swimming regularly, which has since become rather irregular, because I don't really know how to achieve anything in particular. I've never needed to lose weight before and I'm clueless.

I'm just as clueless about diet, and I tend to have a rather unhealthy relationship to sugary stuff. I have dismissed a couple of diets proposed to me in recent history, because they were utterly unrealistic. If I have to turn my whole life around and spend half a day in the kitchen eating 5 meals a day, I better be really, really convinced that it's worth it. Which I haven't been yet. In fact, I don't think that's realistic at all. So diet wise I'm open to try something, but it really needs to be fairly simple to do.

Exercise wise I would like to just swim. It's supposed to be good for weight loss, right? I've already started a bit and improved my physical shape, so I want to find a way to make this effective. Basically the answer I've been looking for is how much (and how hard) should I swim to best lose weight? The upper limit I can do is 1h/day (if for no other reason, the opening hours of the pool).

Hi lucho and welcome to the forum!

I'm not a swimmer so I can't answer your question regarding that...but I know there are others more knowledgable in that area that will come along shortly and offer some sound advice.

Good luck and hang in there :)

Hi and welcome.

I understand that it can seem overwhelming sometimes .. I wrote a post on this recently called - I'd encourage you to check it out.

Here are some simple things you can do to get started:

1 - start logging your food. You can write things down, or you can register for a free account on Fitday.com or thedailyplate.com. Either way, you'll get a good idea of how many calories you're eating, and where your nutrition is coming from. Once you see it all out in one place like that, it'll help you to figure out where to cut back and make changes.

2 - start trying to cut out processed and packaged foods from your eating. I'm not saying you have to spend hours in the kitchen, but for example - if your snack choice is between a granola bar and an apple - choose the apple. If your choice for dinner is a TV dinner vs. scrambling some eggs, choose the eggs. Cutting out packaged foods with their high fat and sodium content will make a big difference.

3 - start moving. Any exercise is good exercise. As you get more fit and more in shape, maybe you'll want to work on a more structured plan, but for now just start moving. If swimming does it for you, then swim. If it's walking, then walk. Movement is good.

Learning about food and nutrition will help you feel less overwhelmed. Start by reading the sticky posts in the forum and then ask questions. The more questions you ask, the more information you'll have. :)
