New here, saying hello

Hello all, since this is my first post I thought I would introduce myself and give a little background info.

I am a 35 year old male who needs and wants to loose some weight. I have always been heavy, even as a child and teenager, I am sure many of you can relate. At my heaviest, last winter, I was 365 pound. This summer I was diagnosed with high blood pressure and my doctor put me on medication for it. At that time I was down some from my highest and I weighed 358 lbs. I decided that I wanted to do whatever I could to lower my BP and get off the medication. I started by eliminating everything that contained lots of sodium. This meant getting rid of pretty much everything that was in a box or a can that was in the kitchen. WOW! It is truly amazing how much sodium is in some things that I never new contained it. At the same time I decided that eliminating the sodium alone was probably not going to be enough and I had always wanted to loose some weight so I decided to change the way I eat and get some exercise. I started by walking every night (or at least 5 night a week) and I cut out all soda, junk foods, snacks and no more stops at the mini-mart for late night munchies. I love to eat and I am very good at it (Haha). I have always liked drinking water and drank more than most people I knew, but I also increased my water intake. I began to eat more fruits and veggies and cut way back on portion sizes. None of this was easy but I did it and have continued to do it for 12 weeks.

So far I have not used any diet aids like pills or supplements nor have I used any plan or program. I have not counted calories or used any particular diet. I have only tried to eat more sensibly and in a much more controlled manner.

Thankfully my wife has been very supportive and has joined me by loosing 18 pounds herself. She has a lot less to lose than me but has done a great job so far.

My results so far are that I have lost 59 pounds in 12 weeks and I am down 66 from my heaviest. My BP is now normal and I have cut my BP medication in half and I am planning on talking to my Doctor about when I can try going without any medication. I do not mean to brag and I hope I don’t come across that way, but I am very proud and excited about what I have accomplished so far. What a great feeling to see 299 on the scale, I am not sure when I was last under 300. I know I was somewhere around 306 – 312 in April of ’88 when I was a junior in high school, so it must have been before then sometime. WOW, I just figured it out and that was 18 and a half years ago!

Although I have done really well and I am very happy, my issue is that I seem to have hit a point where I am starting to get bored with just walking and the weight loss has slowed down significantly in the past 2 weeks. I realize I was losing a lot of weight very, very fast and I did not expect that to continue forever. I feel as though I am starting to get into a rut though.

I do not have a lot of free time as I work full time, am married (we have a 3 year old daughter), and I have gone back to college part time, but I would like some ideas on other things to do. What do you guys and girls do to keep it fresh and stay motivated? What do you suggest I try? I have never actually lost any amount of weight before this and I really want to continue. Any suggestions are greatly appreciated.

I did buy and assembled a home gym this past weekend to do some weight training as I have realized that not only had I gained a lot of weight in the last 15 years, I have also lost a lot of muscle too. I also plan on buying a treadmill to use this winter because walking outside in the winter with no sidewalks in north-western PA is probably not the best idea.

Sorry this post is so lengthy but I have never talked to anyone, even anonymously, about my weight or weight loss and once I got started I just kept going. I guess I had more to say than I thought. LOL.

Thanks all
Fenster

Welcome Fen! This is a great place to start looking for ideas to keep it all fresh. We ooze optimisim like an infection ...lol. Ok that was a bit graphic, sorry

Good Luck!!

BRAG!!! You deserve it!!! You deserve to shout it off the rooftops!! Congrats to you. :D

As for the getting bored, I understand how you feel, as I was once on a diet, and lost about 60 pounds, after that I got bored and I ended up gaining the weight back. I'm not sure what you can do. I've heard people say change up your exercising. If you're walking, then run, go dancing with your wife, if you don't dance, take dancing lessons. Etc... Those are just examples. Just change it up as much as you can and do different things and make it fun.

Good luck, and we're all here for you!!!

AWESOME JOB!! You've kicked some major butt in the weight loss department...and lost a fair share it appears! :D You SHOULD be proud!

As for keeping it fresh, I started out at Curves, then added walking, some days I run versus walking, some days I run every other lap. It could be as simple as changing the time you work out or the order of the exercises.

I'm addicted to magazines...Women's Health and Fitness to be specific. They have 'em for boys too (lol). They always have different exercises in there so I steal em and incorporate them into my work out. That way I work the areas that I want but don't have to do the same stuff

After about a month or so your body gets used to the workout and one will typically plateau if the workout is not varied somehow....which sounds like what has happened to you.

Remember that "exercise" doesn't have to look like "exercise." I don't know how active your little one is, but chasing a 3 year old around in the backyard for 30 minutes is pretty good cardio if you wanna mix it up one day. A family walk after dinner, parking further away from the store and forcing yourself to take more steps to get to where you're going, taking the stairs whenever applicable. Consider incorporating your daughter in your workout...she's a pretty solid weight, lift her versus free weights...she'll get a kick out of it and so will you, while getting in some strength training. Put her on your back and run around the block, back yard, etc.

Just have fun with it! :)

Hi Fenster!! Congrats on the 66 pounds---that's a remarkable achievement, you should be uber proud of yourself! :) Keep up the good work!

The way I change things up with my cycling is somedays I bring a magazine, somedays I watch the tv, other days I find that little happy place that lets my mind wander completely (those days the time flies by).

Good luck!

Wow Fenster! You have made so many healthy changes. You should be proud of your accomplishments.

Here's a post you might find interesting (kickstarting your metabolism again):

Hi All.
I've been asked a few times about cheat days, so I will try to explain it.

how to cheat
Once a week, you can go a little crazy with your "diet"......

How about a walk with your wife and daughter (before it gets too cold!!!)? Or around campus before or after class? Strength training will be a great change for you.

If you like cooking (or are willing to learn), learn about using herbs and spices and find some recipes. Many people enjoy preparing interesting, healthy food to make their food more interesting. You are busy I know, but maybe one night a week you could manage something fun or new to make. Involve wife and dau, make it family time.

Good luck and come back to see us.

I don't have any advise (because I am new)
But I have to tell you I am very impressed with you and your goals!
You are doing way better than me! :D
Great job. I'm jealous. I hope you find what you are looking for
