new here.. question to other women

Hi,
I am trying to find out some information about training after a hysterectomy. I cannot find any information from other ladies who have had one and if they have been able to return to their normal training schedule. I train about 6 days a week, mostly running, but other cardio and weigh. I am 44 and weight 128 and am 5'5". My current condition is forcing me into this and I fear the effects of a total hyster. The only feedback from women I have gotten has been horribly terrifying and negative. Surely there are women out here who have had to have this surgery and still work out. I know I will have a down time with the surgery... and possibly some chemo. (that is unknown until surgery is done)... but I have been told that I will get fat, lose muscle, have no energy, no sex drive, be depressed and suicidal. Good Lord, really? Anyway... I'm hoping there are women out here who can give me some encouragement... I don't really want to have this happen and it is scary. I do plan to be on Bioidentical hormones. My Doc. says estrogen and testogerone for sure.

Thank you!!!

well the only surgery I have had was a c-section, and I'm going in for a umbilical hernia. The c-section did have me not working out for a while ( a year actually) but that was because my hips spread in preparation for birth, and I didn't have them that way. I also had to heal from the cutting thru all the lower abdominal muscles.

However, I probably could have got back on the workout train sooner.

I think what is key is listening to your body, and not pushing yourself too far, just pushing yourself to workout and gradually you will get further and further along.

Don't let nay sayers drag you down, they will do it at every opportunity. Lots of women have all sorts of surgeries and go back to working out. It's all about: time, patience, and drive.

I have a Y chromosome, but I was told that I can look forward to a life of no more than "brisk walking" after I had open heart surgery last year at age 48. 1 year and 1 day later I completed my first half ironman.

Seize the moment!

I had a total hysterectomy 5.5 years ago. Granted at that time I was still very heavy so working out was minimal at best..LOL Six months after the hysterectomy I had gastric bypass so basically either all of my insides were removed or rerouted and I had to get active.

Following the hysto I walked and walked and walked. You'll have a minimal 6 week recovery time with NO hormone therapy (at least I didn't). The reason is to give your body time to adjust to the sudden removal of all of your estrogen producing organs - that is depending on if you have a partial or total.

If you have a partial done - leaving your tubes - you may not need to go thru hormone replacement. If you have total, obviously you will need it - just something to ask your Dr. and make sure they start you on a low dose.

To address the issues of getting fat, losing muscle, having no energy, no sex drive, & be depressed and suicidal...

Fat - you're having surgery. You'll be swollen so expect it

Muscle - You will NOT lose it instantly. Work your way back into your routine gradually. Your body will remember.

Energy - This is MAJOR surgery. Expect to be tired and when you are.. REST!! Overdoing yourself right away can cause further damage you don't want or need.

Sex Drive - I hesitate to say this, but trust me... once you are told you can't have it... that's the one thing you'll want the most.. hehe ;-)

Depression - if you've had children you may know about post partum depression. What you'll go through following surgery is similar. Then again, you may not have it at all.

Chemo - I have not had to go through this so I can't give you firsthand experience, and I truly hope you do NOT need it, but I will tell you this much. Chemo is a tool to be used... don't let it use or own you. Embrace it and hold it close because this could be SUCH a life experience to LIVE through. And.. when you make it through this adventure, you'll be able to look back and see how you've grown into the stronger woman you are.

You truly have no limits here. Push yourself wisely, but don't ever give up.

Ok.. so there's my $0.02 worth of input. Good luck with your surgery and truly... don't sweat the small stuff.

I'll be here if you need me.

neon :)
