New here - Diet + exercise = very little difference?

Thanks for the advice everyone. I appreciate that you guys take time to help others with their weight loss goals and share your knowledge.

Well I had a larger than usual lunch and dinner yesterday and I added raisins to my oatmeal this morning. I also treated myself to a Subway sandwich for dinner. I'm still losing weight, so far I'm at 12 pounds lost. If I can a little more than I was before and still lose weight that will be more fun :)

Today I wore some pants I haven't worn for a couple weeks. Last time I wore them they fit perfect but today they were falling down when I was walking around campus lol. I should start taking measurements, I must have lost a little around the waist. This is fun hehe...

Another thing I noticed is my belly is slightly smaller. I can only barely notice the difference but my parents noticed right away when they saw me. It also looks a different shape. Instead of bulging out and being more firm, it doesn't stick out quite as far, and it kind of looks more saggy instead of tight, like the fat is hanging down more rather than sticking straight out.

I also can feel that my legs and my abs are harder. My thighs especially feel really hard compared to when I started. Must be all the jumping around in Tae Bo and the rollerblading. They are definitely firmer. Also when I'm sitting down my abs feel a lot harder, even though they are still buried in fat. I chest and shoulders too. I just feel firmer all over.

I have had many failed attempts at losing weight in the past but they were always some kind of half-baked plan, like deciding to eat high protein and low carbs, etc. However, this is the first time I have been scientific about it, keeping careful track of calories and really paying attention to what I am eating at all times, etc. The other thing I have tried in the past was adding exercise to my daily routine and expecting to lose weight, without dieting. This is the first time I have done exercise and diet together and on a very organized basis. I think it's really cool to see results and my family is amazed because they have tried losing weight and failed, and they almost can't believe it is really possible.

I don't know what happened, if it was the fad diets or what, but somehow the average person doesn't seem to know you have to eat less calories than you consume in order to lose weight. It's wierd, when i talk to family and friends about dieting, the first thing they think of is some kind of fad diet, like Atkins, or just avoiding carbs and eating whatever protein calories you want, or other wacky diets that involve eating tons of food with the promise of losing weight. It's almost like the simple idea of just cutting back and being disciplined is too hard for people to believe.

OK so down to the nitty-gritty, what do you guys think about this, I probably burn around 4000 calories a day due to my walking and daily workouts, how does about 2500 calories of food a day sound? Too much, too little? I was reading around the forums and other websites and read somewhere that you can have a deficit of as much as 1500 calories a day but if you go farther than that, your body is likely to react negatively, like Steve was explaining. What do you think about 2500 for my new daily intake? I realize probably won't lose weight as quickly as I did the first 2 weeks.

Hey guys just an update!!!

I have lost 20 pounds so far and it's only been 3 weeks! WOOHOO!

It's exciting, my comfy pants started getting loose... now my pants that were tight on my waist are loose too! :D

We're cookin along here...

^^^ what everyone else says. I was on 1200-1500 for some time, now im paying the price with major plateaus and my body being messed up thinking so little is 'normal' and ok.

Find out what you should be eating at a healthy weight - eat that. Its probably at least 2000 calories a day.

Once you get to your goal weight you dont have to change your eating habits at all, you KNOW how much to eat :)
