New Guy, training for 5k

Hello,
I started training for a 5k about 2 weeks ago (it's on March 7th) and am just now starting to change how I eat as well. Trying to stay under 2,000 calories per day and the training is 4-5 days per week. I hope to lose 20 lbs by race day, 30 overall. I also hope to do the 5k in 30 minutes (just under 10 minute miles) but will be happy even if I don't.

By the way, I weigh 200 lbs now, hope to get to 170. I am a 5'10" male.

Any advice is helpful!

Welcome!

I know there's a lot of folk here that have been or are training to run a 5k or something similar. You can probably get some good info reading through their diaries in that section. Starting one of your own can be helpful too in giving you a place for accountability, and for others to give you feedback, advice, etc.

Also, read the stickies in each forum. There's a ton of great info to be had in them.

Keeping track of caloric intake on a site like fitday.com is helpful, because you can also use it to track calories burned. You may find that you will want to cut back your caloric intake further based on your height and current weight. The site can also help you calculate your BMR (basal metabolic rate... calories your body burns in a given day at rest without adding activity to it)

20 pounds in a little over 2 months... its doable. An average healthy amount to lose per week is roughly 2 pounds... so that would be 16 pounds in 8 weeks. Maybe with all the training you are doing it will be a bit more.

Good luck!
