New Guy - Info and Hello!

Well, I found this site through google because I decided to finally "slim down" for lack of a better term. Lol. Anyways, I have plans on going to Australia first part of next year and I am not going unless I can lose some weight (alot). I want to snorkle, scuba dive and be comfortable on the plane. I want to be happy.

This is just one reason. My main reason? Is many. It's time. I have procrastinated long enough and I am tired of the burden! A little info about me, don't be too shocked!

I am a 26 year old male. The last time I was weighed was at the emergency room when I got stitches for cut and the nurse said I weighed - 420lbs.

Yes. 420lbs. As of right now, I do not know because most all scales do not go above 300lbs. I have probably gained 20lbs since then. Its disgusting, I know. The only good thing about all this (if any) is when somone asks, they are in shock because they say I don't look it.

Anyways, I did some searching on here and found out how to tell my build. I always knew (thought) I was a large build. According the wrist calculation - I am a large build. Wrists are 8". Also, according to this handy link..

It says I should weigh.. between 164 and 188 pounds. I find that absolutely amazing. I am not sure that is even possible for me. How accurate are these things? I was thinking at most 225 for me and ideal goal weight of 200. Anyone think that sounds right? I am 6' tall.

Genetics plays a roll here, but I was small as a kid and then one day it just started and would not stop. I keep saying I will do something, but that does not last long. I did Atkins for a few months, lost about 60lbs in 3 months. Stopped because I got a bad flu. Then a few years ago did the weight lifting/gym thing. I was averaging 5lbs lost a week. Lost about 35lbs in a month and a half. Felt really good but ran into some trouble with a friend (supporter) and stopped.

I am not a heavy eater. I guess my problem is my job/lifestyle and eating only one meal during the day - a big dinner. I do IT for a living and I am either siting at my desk or driving in my car. No excercise. That is going to change. Also, my meal planing is going to change. I am going to am for 4-6 small meals a day. As for calories - I am not sure what my intake should be. I don't want to max it out, but I don't want to go into "starvation" mode either.

Read over alot of succesfull stories here. Lots of people working hard to be what they want. Lots of shocking before and afters. Seems like alot of nice people as well.

My main reason for signing up? Support and suggestions. I am tired of being who I am. I can feel my body telling me it can't do it anymore. I want to look good, feel good and be "normal" :) Everyone tells me how good I would look if I got smaller and how drop dead gorgeous I would be. Well, not sure if they were lying, but all those people can't be wrong. Time to find out. Noticed some guys on here went from sick to SLICK! (nice term). The transformation was amazing.

Any other guys out there doing this?

Lastly, I am just looking for support. I need support. I can push myself - but there is a point where a hi, hello, hows it going can go a long way. I AM going to push myself as much as it takes becaus I want this! I quit smoking last year and I told myself that if I could do that, I can do this.

Ugh, this is sounding like an infomercial. Anyways - thats me! Hi :)

I'm right there in the same boat as you, my friend. Just grab the bull by the horns and go for it. That's what I did about 14 weeks ago. At 445lbs I had had enough and I'm hell-bent on changing my previously unhealthy lifestyle.

There are lots of great, knowledgeable people here that both inspire and inform. Good luck!!

Hey SirK welcome to site. You should start up a weight loss diary. You'd be surprised how much it will motivate you to write stuff down. I take a picture of myself once a week and hang them up in my workout room so I get to see my week by week transformation. might want to try that if you need some extra motivation or just want to watch yourself shrink. Good luck as you start on your transformation.

You can do it! Wish you the best of luck on this journey!! We're here if you need us, feel free to message!!

Welcome! I totally understand the "you'd be beautiful, if only you lost weight", I don't think people realize how much that hurts... we're here for you, message me if you like! Best of luck :)

SirK I am 22, I am shooting for around 210 pounds, You'll be suprised, the close you get to your goal, the more you will realize that you do not need to get down to 188 pounds. You said you hold you weight well, I do too, and I know that at 215 pounds I'll look like 190. I am rooting for you man, I just started this week on dieting. Good luck man, if you want it to happen it will, nothing is standing between you and your new life.

Welcome aboard SirK, we will try and give you as much support as we can. You are right - others here have proven that it can be done. Your lifestyle obviously doesn't work - you've identified that, and you need to correct it. Be sensible, make intelligent changes - long term changes, one at a time if need be. You can eat a lot of some things such as fresh fruit and veggies, with surprisingly few calories, and a hell of a lot of nutrients. Giving up junky food is hard - you have to break old habits, by forcing new tastes. But it can be done. Keep away from processed fatty/sugary food for a month does reduce a lot of the cravings for it.

Start getting more active, but seek medical advice before getting too active - get a check up before starting anything too strenuous. Be prepared to experiment, and find activities that you can enjoy. Walking is a popular one, especially at the start of a lifestyle change, and it can later progress to jogging or running if need be. Swimming is another great method, as is cycling, or joining a gym.

Whatever - you might want to take photos of yourself now, along with weight, measurements, clothe size etc. Say goodbye to the unhealthy you.

Welcome!
I'm pretty new here too and thus far I love it. I second the suggestion to start a diary. I started one the first day I was here and (don't laugh) my favorite part of the day is putting in all my information so I can really see how much I've improved on things. Another thing I'd suggest is starting an account on fitday.com. It's way easier to keep track or your calorie intake, it also manages your fat, carb, and protein intake, which rocks, as well as your activities (if you chose to put it in, it's not terribly accurate, but it gives you an idea).
Also, I don't pay too much attention to the BMI chart things that tell you if you're this tall you should weigh this much. Personally, I'd go more off of fat percentage. A friend of mine who has crazy muscle mass is classified as morbidly obese on those despite having 8% (ish) body fat because of all the muscle.
Good luck! I'm excited to see how it all goes!

Hello there, one thing i'm learning is that this is not going to be a quick fix, but life changing, I don't think I can ever go back to the way I used to eat. Welcome and i'm sure you will find all the members here very helpful I surely have. Goodluck

WOW! I posted this thursday and only saw one new post so I did not check back. Decided to check back today and SWEETNESS - lots of replies.

Thank you all for the comments, ideas, and positive reinforcement.

For now, I am not doing any work on the weekends. Changing my diet overnight is big enough for me right now. Don't want to over estend myself and burn out by pushing too hard. So for now (until I get a little more in shape) I will be walking everyday for 30mins around the neighborhood.

I have officially stopped eating junk and sodas and all that crap as of thursday. It's not hard and I don't have a problem - its just breaking my body of the addiction. Just like nicotine, sugar, caffine and the like - my body wants. So far, so good.

Beleive it or not - I have lots a few lbs already. I have a scale on order (tough to find when most only go to 300) and this should help me document my progress.

First couple of walks - I wanted to quit. My body was telling my mind to QUIT! I had to over ride it - I pushed and then I pushed harder. One thing I have learned in my trials and errors - you won't get anything done if you don't PUSH YOURSELF to do it. It is much easier to not do it so you get set in your ways.

Anyways - nice to meet all of you. I am going to do the diary/log thing along with pictures. I will post pictures maybe in a few months when I see some noticeable progress.

In the meantime, feel free to PM, AIM, MSN, YAHOO me. Would like to meet some people and chat. :)

Congratulations on starting! Once you've been doing it regularly it gets weird to *not* eat right and exercise. So you don't have to force yourself to do it forever (which is kind of nice).

I'm really excited for you, that's awesome!

As to calories, I shoot for between 1200 - 1500. I don't know if it should be higher as you're male though. I also try to switch it up a little with the calories. Don't hit your desired calorie intake every day. I'll hit 1200 one day and 1400 the next.

Good Luke and keep it up! I'm pretty new around here, but certainly feel free to PM me or whatever.
peace
Liz
