New from MN

Hello all! My name is Amber, and I am 25 years old. I currently run 2-4 miles 3-6 times a week, and also do some resistance training. I'm in decent shape. I would like to kick it up a notch, but can't afford a trainer! I read about fitness online and in magazines, but I really think that if I knew more, I could get more out of my workouts.

I currently run 5k's when I get time, I would like to run a 10k or perhaps half marathon next summer. I also need to learn more about nutrition and weight training, that's where I really have no clue what I'm doing. This looks like a fun community, I thank you all in advance for the great info!

Welcome to the forums. Read the stickies and the post away with your questions. There is a lot of good information here on the site as well as helpful posters.

Welcome! As far as nutrition, you can't go wrong if you eat mostly vegetables and fruits. For the rest, whole grains, nuts, and beans are best. Eat meat sparingly (if at all), and mostly fish. Non-fat dairy if at all, and no or minimal sugars and processed foods. I have a feeling that folks on this forum are going to get sick of me saying all this. Maybe I need to put a page on my website detailing my nutrition thoughts, and just post a link any time anyone asks about nutrition. :)

A personal trainer can sure be helpful, even if it's just one at the local Y or the like. Or even if you can only afford one session. Doing resistance training wrong can get you hurt.

Failing that, there are some pretty good resources online. The Body for Life website is the first one that springs to mind. There are some good books out there too, such as "Framework" by Nicholas deNubile (hope I'm spelling that right).

But honestly, CONSISTENCY trumps knowledge. Just do SOMETHING most every day!

Hope this helps, make it happen!

Thank you very much for the welcome guys!

Thanks for the tips joebedford, I eat pretty well with the occasional cheat... oops. My fridge is mostly fruits/veggies, yogurt, eggs, cottage cheese. I think this is due to my lack of cooking skills... I eat what is easy. I'm not about to prepare a pasta or anything. I eat plain oatmeal and/or eggs for breakfast. I have a sensitive stomach when it comes to running, so I have to be careful about that - nothing fancy.

Why is dairy bad? Don't worry about hurting my feelings, feel free to criticize! Do you have a good suggestion for a grain bar with dried friut/nuts to keep in my purse for a snack? It seems like they are all so sugary.

Welcome to the forum :)

Sounds like you have a leg up! You can definitely improve your running by doing some strength training. Balancing the two will really help you to improve and step it up!

Nice to have you join us :)

Thank you! There is so much good info on this forum, it's kind of overwhelming right now, but I have already learned so much. I've added some things to my diet and thrown some out...
