My name is Kate I am 26 and I desperatly need to loose some weight!! i would love to loose about half my body weight but it just seems so hard and I am finding it really hard to get started! I am a gym member and LOVE swimming but I find I go for a week or two and then something interups my pattern and I just stop! I am hoping that if I joined a forum I may find the dedication within myself!

Anyway hello :)

Hi Kate and welcome! :)

Do take some time to read the sticky posts in the various forums - there's lots of good information there that will be helpful to you.

One thing I want to say about what you wrote:
I find I go for a week or two and then something interups my pattern and I just stop!

This is something that I tell people here all the time - it's part of my philosophy about being healthy, losing weight, etc.

You wouldn't allow something to make you "just stop" going to work, right? You wouldn't allow something to interrupt your routine so that you didn't pay your bills, right? You wouldn't stop brushing your teeth or cleaning the toilet or doing laundry or whatever, right?

For me, making exercise THAT MUCH OF A PRIORITY is the only thing that worked for me. I look at exercise and eating healthy in the same way I look at getting up and going to work. Do I want to do it every morning? Nope. I would much rather sleep in. Getting up at 6:30 every morning and fighting traffic sucks. :) Are there days that I have other things I need to do? Sure. But I schedule them around work, not schedule work around them. That's because I know that not going to work will have negative consequences - I'll lose my job, be unable to pay my bills, and ... well ... we all know that's not a good thing.

That's, IMO, what people who are successful at this whole health/weight loss thing have done. They made eating right and working out MORE of a priority than anything else in their lives.

Now, it's not an option for me - it's just a part of life as much as anything else I do.

I hope maybe that helps you view things with a different perspective ... :)

Welcome, Kate!
How much weight do you want to lose? Do you have any specific goals? It's time for you to make YOU the priority! You can do it! Just like Kara said...you have to make it a vital part of your life. Once you get into that habit, you will find that you don't want to let days go by without working out.
For example, I have been feeling under the weather, but hate how I feel when I don't work out. So, despite feeling crappy, I got out today and walked, and also lifted weights. You have to decide that you are worth it...and you are!
Good luck!

Welcome to the forum.

Dont be daunted by the notion of being on the big side with half your bodyweight to lose... That approach means that you are looking on it as a nearly impossible task right from the start. If you think that you are trying to do something that you deem impossible you are much more likely to give up...

One problem is that very few of us happen to know anyone in real life who has more than halved their bodyweight.

Think of your current weight and how nice it would be to be a bit smaller. I found setting reachable milestones really easy and really beneficial. I got so that I was hitting a milestone very regularly - which helped me down to the next one.

If you had said what your current weight was I could have suggested a couple to you. I became quite good at spotting milestones that were attainable and gave me a really good feeling...

I also started off by walking. When I started I went out and walked round the block (0.6 miles). I took my time and found it tiring. I decided that I would go out for a walk every day and walk at least as far as the day before and increase the distance as soon as I could. I got stronger and fitter and pretty soon was walking quite long distances every day. I didnt care about speed - just building up my stamina.

I also started cleaning up my act regarding food. I stopped eating sweets and chocolates, cake, biscuits etc. Then I started eating more and more healthily as I became more committed to the notion.

I was motivated by seeing the pounds come off. Before I knew it I had hit a few milestones and wondered just how far I could go if I really tightened things up.

Good luck with making your weight loss dreams come true. It really is possible. Quite a few of us here have done just that.

I stopped buying slimming magazines because a lot of my friends here have lost more weight than most magazine's "inspirational stories".
