New and Looking for Advice

I'm 17 and I've been trying to lose weight for a few months now.
When it comes to exercising I am extremely motivated, but the diet seems to be the problem.

My mother cooks for me, and although she claims that what she makes for me is healthy, I am pretty sure eating nothing but rice + meat is not the way to go.

I currently eat vitamin c pills, as well as omega-300 pills daily, and I am trying to limit the amount that I eat.

As for my workout, I go to the gym almost every day and do about 40 minutes of cardio and 20 minutes of weight lifting. I also mix in a few hour-and-a-half sessions of swimming every now and then

Currently I am trying to earn enough money to buy a barbell set, so that I do more than an hour of exercise each session, and I am also going to start weighing myself every week.

So...

1 hour of exercise every weekday (40 cardio, 20 weight lifting)
Small meals every 3 hours

Will this be enough to help me lose weight? I am very open to suggestions (especially with diet) and I am not only motivated, but I know for a fact that I can do whatever possible to lose weight.

With so much exercise you'd assume your body would be in shape. Rice has good nutritious value but processed meat could have a bad effect on your liver. What type of meat and where do you get it?

Exercise only does so much. Unless you watch your diet as well, nothing will change. It's not that he might be eating processed meat or rice..it's how many calories you are taking in each day. My suggestion is start with a food diary. For one week, write everything you eat with as much detail as possible. You should look into balancing your meals out with more than rice and meat. You need other food in your life as well.

My other question is the need for more details like height and weight. Remember as well that you are still growing so I would be careful of cutting too much in this stage of life.

Starting a food diary seems too extreme, he might be trying to lose 6 lbs and there's no point in keeping track of everything you eat to the slightest detail. Seems like a big waste of time. Just eat a lot of fruit/vegetables. Who prepares your meal? Tell them to give you smaller portions. Eat 6 times a day. Adjust your lifestyle and the weight will come off. Counting calories is a waste of time as soon as you stop counting you'll be back where you were. It's about adjusting your lifestyle to the point that you lose weight and you're comfortable with it.

Avoid snacks.

Good luck.

Not too extreme in the least. It's a simple beginning.

Now, on your own advice..you realize there is plenty of calories in fruit so really wouldn't suggest eating 'a lot of veggies and fruits'. Veggies yes. Fruits, no.

The 6 time a day is a myth. It only works if you, yourself, are more comfortable eating 6 a day as long as your overall calorie count remains lowered.

And avoiding snacks is too generic. There is nothing wrong with snacks if done right..like veggies. Or a handful of walnuts.

Mostly everything has calories - that's a no brainer. I could eat potato chips all day and still get calories I need but that doesn't mean I get the nutrients I need. The reason I pointed out fruits/vegetables is because they contain no fat and are balanced with vitamins.

Referring to snacks, I mean junk food. I don't see a point in snacking if you already eat every 3 hours. The whole point is to create consistency that your stomach will get accustomed to.

Work out before you eat. The whole "eat then work out" method isn't too effective as insulin stores the fats before you even get up from your table.

Don't eat too fast. Don't eat too much at once. It's very simple stuff, you should know if you're not eating right.

I'm 19.1 BMI and I haven't counted a single calorie in my life.

1) nothing wrong with fats if they are the right ones so really saying fruit cause it has no fat isn't really a reason to eat fruits.

2) The 6 meals (every 3 hours) has been proven to show no real difference in case studies. It comes down to what they are comfortable with.

3) Glad you are so low in BMI and never counted calories (you have a 19.1 BMI and on a weight loss forum? ok..), doesn't mean it isn't a factor for him. Based on what he said, I think he needs to look at how many calories he really is taking in. We underestimate how many calories we eat all the time.

I'm here to teach and learn more about nutrition and weight loss - I don't have to be overweight to want to learn about it. Appreciate your input though.

Ah because none of us know who you are. You only posted here. How about posting in the Newcomer thread so we can learn about you?

It's much easier to take advice from someone who is part of the community.
