New and dont know where to start!

Hi!

I thought I'd come and introduce myself. I'm a 20 yr old female from Canada hoping to finally lose weight!
My favorite colour's purple, I'm a Nursing student, and I love to play volleyball and tennis.
I'm 5ft (short!) and 190lbs. I just recently hit 196 which was my highest weight and as the 200lb mark looms closer, I've decided I need to make a change.
Looking for ideas and how to get started! I know I should eat less, exercise more.... but what exercises to do?! How much food is too much food!? Help!

Looking forward to meeting new people!
:hurray:

Hey there! Welcome to the boards. I'd read around and find the sticky threads in the various sub-forums, they've been really helpful for me.

As for what to eat and how much, that really depends on your specific body type/weight/height/activity level/etc. You could check out a site like caloriecount.about.com to get an idea about how many calories you should be consuming.

When I first started trying to lose weight, I ate as I normally did for a few days and kept track of all the calories I was consuming. Of course, it ended up being waaaay more than I actually needed! I'd recommend doing that and then cutting back 100-200 calories, and also adding 100-200 calories worth of exercise. I also cut back on soda pop, which made me feel a loooot better. It's totally a personal thing, though, so just try cutting back on things, adding things, etc. until you find something that works for you!

Anyway, welcome once again, I hope to see you around!

Hi and welcome.

It's really not the big issue people expect to lose some pounds.
I did only a few thing to drop almost 60lbs.

1) Cut out the junk food. (by junk, I include processed foods - not just BK or McD's)
2) Cut out soda's (maybe 1-2 per month)
3) Workout a little. Join a gym and go 3 times a week. Even if you only walk 20-30 minutes on a treadmill, it's a start.
4) Cook for yourself. I don't mean heat, I mean cook.

In the 50's and 60's few people were overwight and homecooked meals were common. Soda's were a rare treat and people took a sack lunch to work and wouldn't stop at McDonalds for a breakfast burrito. I think a 50's diet would do a lot of people a lot of good.

Hey,

I pretty much been doing what the guys have already said, the best bit of advice I can give you is to gradually introduce any changes you want to make, I think its more manageable, well that's what I found. First i stopped eating processed food, then a few days/week later soda etc.

Thanks for all your advice guys!
Not much has happened yet, but to be honest, I haven't been trying hard enough. I'm eating better, but not great, but I guess that's a start?

It's just so hard to push myself! I make myself mad even. I can get all psychological and I know that I'm scared that this battle will be sooo hard and I'm not strong enough, but this is definitely something I need to do.

so what do you guys do when you really need someone to kick your butt!!!

hope you're all doing well,
keara

Every little thing counts. If you just continue to eat better and better, adjusting your food intake gradually (cutting calories if needed, adding in more fruits/veggies/whole grains, taking out various "junk" foods and such), over time it will really make a difference. If you push yourself too hard, it'll be overwhelming.

Like I said before about the food/exercise journal, that's how I really hold myself accountable, even if it's just to myself. Monitoring that really helps to kick things into gear, when I can look back and see exactly how I've been doing on a daily/weekly/monthly basis.

It is hard, but you can do it! Just push yourself a little bit more as time goes by. :)

might be good to set concrete rules for yourself, e.g.

-don't eat after 19:00
-try to only drink water, coffee and tea
-cook for yourself, only make as much as you can eat in one sitting
-walk 1 hour a day as many days a week as possible
