Nerd Fitness: Level Up to Slim Down

"You can make yourself into the person you read in books about, you can be the hero of your own story. You are that person, you just need to unlock your inner potential and to do that you've got to keep on clearing the dungeons and slaying your inner demons - one day at a time." - Neila Ray

I am a nerd. Pikachu is my spirit animal, Superman is my personal hero, and I chug blue Gatorade like its a mana potion. Now, I wouldn't go so far as to call myself a supernerd, but I do tick some boxes off the qualifications. A bit of a tomboy growing up, I spent more time roughhousing with the neighborhood guys and playing Nintendo 64 (yes, I'm sort of old...), and watching sci-fi and reading comics, and basically fantasizing of the day I'd magically get transported to some far-off world where monsters still existed and 'hero' was a legitimate career choice. Unfortunately, over a decade of waiting, and that still hasn't happened (but I still check every wardrobe I come across - just to make sure it can't transport me to Narnia... or Middle Earth, I'd be okay with that too).

Now, in the "real" world, I work/study in health care, and the further I delve into the subject, the more I realize what a hypocrite I've been. This is not my first time on this site, nor is it my first attempt at losing weight, or getting healthy, and all that wonderful jazz. "With great power comes great responsibility" (guess who said that one :p) and as a health care worker, I know we're sort of set to a 'higher standard' in certain areas, as we are the ones who tell our patients, y'know... "Take care of your body, and your body will take care of you." But really, what right do I have to tell them that when I don't do it myself? I can understand, and 100% empathize with people who come home after a long day at work, or a 4-hour lecture, and just want to throw themselves onto the bed and not do a single thing. I guess I just spend so much time worrying about taking care of others, I neglect to take care of myself. And after years of neglect, and continuously "falling off the wagon" I can safely say I'm unfit and unhealthy.

This, of course, got me thinking of ways in which I could stay "on the wagon" and not fall off again. Psychologically, I know that continuous failure has made me associate dieting and exercise as 'bad', and as something to dread. Every time I try, it ends up feeling more like a chore and less of a choice, and eventually I give up because I just can't stand it. Looking for more 'positive reinforcement', I considered the things I enjoyed doing, and how I could incorporate it into my physical wellness. Then, as I was logging into one of my PC games to do some daily quests... it hit me. The thing that makes games so addicting (in my opinion) is the sense of achievement and gratification it gives... you kill some monsters, hunt for items, turn in a quest... boom! You level up, you get a reward, and now you get something new and shiny to play around with. It gives you incentive to keep going, to keep playing, and to keep leveling up.

What if I could do that with my weight loss and overall health?

It may seem a bit unconventional, but I think it'd be a bit of long-awaited wish fulfillment (to live my life [metaphorically at least] like the heroic characters I play) with the added benefit of improving my health and fitness. I haven't quite figured out all the 'mechanics' of it yet, but if any of you have played any sort of MMORPG, developers are always adding 'updates' and 'game patches' to improve content; similarly, I'll be adding new things as I progress along. So, I guess without much further ado, let's get this started!

(If this doesn't make any sense to you, that's okay. It does to me :blush5:)

Like I said, if none of that made sense, its okay. It makes sense in my mind, lol. The 'daily quests' are certain goals I'd like to make a habit, for varying reasons. Some people say eat breakfast, others say it don't matter... personally, I'd like to be able to eat something in the morning that is relatively healthy and filling to 'set' me up for the rest of the day. I definitely notice I don't snack as much on days I've eaten breakfast, so that's what I'd like to aim for. Water is important, of course, not just because that's what the majority of our bodies is comprised of, but also because proper hydration is generally good for mental sharpness, excretion of toxins and metabolic waste, and it helps stave off those false senses of hunger. Right now, my calorie goal is to eat within the 1200-1500 range, though that's more of a way to keep myself more mindful of what I'm putting into my mouth. Lastly, I spend a lot of time at my desk and for several hours at one time. Getting up every hour to do a little stretch, maybe some jumping jacks or squats, walking a few 'laps' back and forth across th room... just to keep myself from becoming too sedentary, to allow my blood a chance to circulate more properly.

The achievements are some longer term goals, such as being able to run a 5k or do 100 pushups and so on. I'll definitely think of more along the way, but its a pretty good foundation and something I think I can stick to.

That's about it for now. If anyone can think of other easy, 'beginner' goals or long term achievements and random, appropriate rewards, feel free to add on! Any and all input is appreciated.

Live long and prosper!

It all makes sense to me. Actually reminds me of this thing someone came up with an iPhone app called "Epic Win" that's basically an RPG and to do list wrapped into one. You get XP for doing chores or working out whatever.

When it comes to motivation, anything that works... works. Welcome aboard, and may the forces of evil get confused on the way to your house.

Whaaaaaaat... :eek2:
I'm an Android user, but that app is one more reason on a short list of reasons why I wish I had an iPhone now instead. That looks, as the title states, extremely epic and something I would definitely use if I had the means to. That sort of thing is exactly "my" thing. Gah, I'm actually jealous now...

Hey everyone!

I wasn't able to update yesterday due to time restraints, but I have started my "Health Quest" as I have now dubbed it, in order to slay the beast that lay deep within the cavernous fat of my belly. I usually want to write my journal at the end of the day, as I can have all my quests and whatnot fulfilled, but realizing that this is not always possible, I will write when I can and update the "stats" at a later time.

Anyway, moving on~
Yesterday went rather well, I think. I hit all my goals except for "Calorie King" when I let my late night cravings get the better of me after class that evening. I ate a great breakfast of whole wheat toast, a scrambled egg, half an apple, and a cup of coffee. I sipped my first two cups of water as I waited for my stomach to settle, and studied for an upcoming test for about an hour and a half before leaving for the gym. I currently only use the weight machines, as I'm a bit intimidated by free weights and don't have knowledge on proper form (I will attempt to get a trainer in the future, but cannot afford one at the moment). That being said, I did work on upper body strength (arms, shoulders, chest, back and core) and then finished off with 30 min of cardio (broken up between the rowing machine and elliptical). As I was there, I drank through a regular sized bottle of water (16oz), and then drank another cup of water with my lunch of homemade chili and rice after I got home.

The rest of the day progressed pretty blandly, as I did homework and more studying. I set the timer on my phone to go off every hour, so if I hadn't already, I'd remember to get up and take a short walk around the house or something. For dinner, I had chicken and vegetable stir fry (no rice or sides, just loaded up with the veggies) and sipped through another bottle of water during my class that evening. Of course, afterwards I was just tired and zombiefied, and let a random nightly craving for Taco Bell throw me off a good ending. But that aside, it was a pretty decent start.

Today is following a similar pattern. I ate breakfast not too long ago, of mini wheats and milk, plus a cup of coffee. Again, I'm waiting for my stomach to settle and sipping my water to hydrate before I head to the gym in about 30-45min. Today is just a slow cardio day, so I'll most likely break it up between the rowing machine and elliptical again. I love the rowing machine, but I just don't have the endurance yet to go for longer periods of time. I can do 10-15min, and then I'll finish the rest up with the elliptical, which is easier on my joints as I'm still recovering from a continued knee injury.

That's about it for now! I'll come back later and update the rest of my day, and tally up my EXP for the day. Until then!:seeya:

LouLou86 & ijustwannabefit: Thank you both for the support! I really appreciate it, and it means a lot! :)

Today was not my best day, but I'm not letting it bother me too much. I have an 8:00AM class every Friday, and I have a bit of a commute to campus (roughly 20-30min depending on traffic) so I was a little rushed in getting out the door. I ended up stopping for coffee at the 7-11 across school, and bought a granola bar to go along with it. I had my water with me too (I have a large plastic cup, with a sealed lid and straw that I just fill up wherever I can) so I sipped through that after I was finished with my coffee. After I got home that afternoon, I came to realize we were woefully in need of a grocery run and ended up making a quesadilla and some pinto beans from what I could find in the fridge as my lunch. I definitely snacked a lot throughout the rest of the day, though I was mindful enough to reach for 'healthier' options like almonds, an apple or banana, etc. But I have found a "chink" in the armor of my plan, as I've also realized that I failed to take into account how much more physical activity I would be getting as opposed to before I began. (Side note: This is like my second week of 'dieting/fitness', but I only remembered to come here and start writing my journal a few days ago - in addition to the plan for "leveling".)

Initially, before I started this, I almost never ate breakfast, and felt relatively fine with that. Like I've said, I spend a lot of time at a desk, and so because I was rarely moving, I didn't expend much energy and was able to just sit there mindlessly drinking my juice or coffee and not feeling too hungry. Of course, lunchtime or dinnertime rolls around, and of course I suddenly have a huge appetite and will eat whatever I see in front of me (unless its fish... not too big a fan of that :ack2:). Basically, I was stinting my metabolism by "starving" myself until meal time, and then overloading when I should have been eating more frequently and in moderation. Now, because I'm getting up, and moving around, and getting an hour or so of designated exercise almost every day, I feel like I'm just soooo hungry all the time. Like, I wake up and I'm actually hungry (that used to never happen); I go to the gym, and afterwards I'm just like "feeeeed me!"; I look at the sun, and its like, "Oh, hey.. that looks like an orange. OMG, an orange sounds so good right nowwww."

So, with all that happening, I think I'll need to take a bit of time to iron out a more solid plan on my eating habits (eating more timely, finding foods that will keep me "full" longer, etc). Everything else is pretty great, actually. Going to the gym is starting to become a habit, as I missed it today and felt absolutely "off" because of it, and I'm very much looking forward to tomorrow morning when I can get that in. Its also pretty fascinating the variety of people you'll come across there, and I like to do a bit of "people watching" when I do my cardio (not the creepy kind, I swear! Just the sort of secondhand observation). My drinking is doing great as well, and I pretty much only drink water, coffee and tea now. I tried having a soda the other day, and it really just didn't appeal to me anymore (as well as leaving me feel a bit ill in the stomach). Getting up every hour while I'm at my desk has been well, and I usually use playing with my dog as motivation to get away for a few minutes.

MrVee mentioned a really cool app a few posts up, but unfortunately it was only for the iPhone and I have an Android. But, with a little bit of investigation, I was able to find something similar for my own device, in which I could assign "daily tasks" with different levels of importance, which upon completion will give me EXP towards leveling up. Its pretty neat, and very easy to use, and gives alerts when its time to complete something. I enjoy it a lot, and because I always have my phone on me, it goes with me wherever I am. So no excuses for forgetting something!

I think I'll just give weekly updates on my "stats" when I do my weigh-ins, so I can focus on the actual writing during the week. That's it for now! Feeling great, doing great... and wishing all of you the best in your own journeys! We're all in this together!

People watching is an underrated hobby. My wife and I went the last 2 nights and are going again today to a local rural festival that has very little to offer aside from spectacular people watching opportunities. There are a lot of people making there annual pilgrimage out of the woods to the Yamboree. Yes a festival celebrating yams! Good times.

Nice progress so far. Good luck on finding that balance with your diet.

So, its been over a week since I last posted, but that doesn't necessarily mean I've already given up. It just means I need to remember to come here more often :p

I've been tweaking the 'system' as I go along, and made myself a 'quest booklet' as I like to call it. Its really just a binder with a daily sheet of things to fill in, and long term challenges that I can cross out as I finish them. I started the 100-pushup challenge yesterday, and printed the program out and stuck it in my little binder to follow along. So, we'll see how I do with that in 6-weeks. Really, my exercise as a whole has been pretty good. I'm starting to feel the effects of it, as I have more energy and don't get tired as quickly as I used to. I'm not that much stronger, but I can feel a small difference with lifting items and whatnot. My mind isn't as foggy, and I can think more clearly and sharply, which is great because I'm plowing through all my schoolwork like a breeze.

Still a bit iffy with the eating, especially this past weekend as we had relatives over. And in my family, that means three things: food, drink, and karaoke. Also, on a regular day-to-day basis, its kind of hard to focus on just myself because my family doesn't really understand what I'm trying to do. They accept it, and say its good what I'm doing, but then they want to eat things that aren't the greatest and offer it to me when they make it. And in my family and culture, and how I grew up, the 'rule' is basically "You eat what is given to you" or else its disrespectful. My family is mainly Filipino, and they have this idea that because its fish and vegetables and stuff that its good for you, but then fail to realize we use a lot of soy sauce, fish sauce, things are fried and greasy, etc. I've been keeping myself in my room mostly when I'm at home, because its the easiest way to avoid being tempted, but then I come down to make my own food and its like, "Why are you eating that? We already made food, don't waste it" and so on. Still, I'm reaching for those (raw) fruits and veggies when I can; still drinking lots of water; making healthier choices when I eat out.

All in all, not bad. Not great either, but still tons better than where I used to be. And hopefully, things will just continue to get better. :)

Ohhh another gamer! I don't play much on PC but I am a huge fan of the Final Fantasy games, Skyrim, Uncharted, Last of Us, God of War, CoD, GTA, Shadow of the colossus, Assassins Creed, etc. Also have done a little bit of D&D back in the day!

So I understood all of your of your references! Yay! Hope things carry on getting better and you'll be leveling up (or leveling down, I guess?!) before you know it xo

I do a mean version of House of the Rising Sun.

Food and family has been very difficult for me as well, mainly my mom who likes to put out enough food for an army when she has people over. Visiting them is an exercise in discipline to be sure.
