Need support to stay on diet

Hello,

I am glad to have found a discussion forum about dieting. I am trying to stick to a diet and have been unsuccessful. I am frustrated because my weight has really gotten much higher than I would have anticipated, and I'm sure it's not good for my health. I do a lot of emotional eating, unfortunately, and am trying to work on ways to avoid that.

Hey Progo,

Welcome to the boards! You will find a lot of useful information here. Start with small changes to your eating habits and gradually progress. You want to make it so that your eating habits become a lifestyle change.

Please notice I never used the word diet. Diets may work in the short term, but most people just gain the weight back. You need to get in the habit of eating natural and healthy foods. Again start with some small changes and work from there!

Missteps happen to everyone, Progo. Keep learning and striving; eventually your dreams will become reality.

I'll quasi-quote Dan Millman (edited slightly), "No matter what your behavior, you have done the best you could every day of your life. Even though you have fallen short of your ideal many times and made mistakes, you have also done the very best you were capable of at the time."

Good luck! (and be sure to read the stickies)

I've been on and off the wagon so many times I can't count them. That's why I'm glad I found this forum as well...I enjoy seeing other people's experiences and that helps me to stay focused and motivated. I've lost the weight before, but it always has ended up coming back. I'm glad to be a part of a group of people all here to encourage each other and we can learn from each other. Good luck with your endeavours...we're right here with ya!:grouphug:

i have found in times of weakness, (like walking past a chip shop) that a familier phrase will help me, if you keep saying it to yourself over and over whenever you find that you are tempted....

For me it's "Stand Firm"

and soon it'l be "You've come this far, Stand Firm!"

and it makes me feel strong enough to say no, and reminds how much
I want to look and feel good.

Try it with your own phrase... or use mine :)

Healthy eating and portion sizes are the main key words to success! It is so very hard to stay on track, just never say you CANT have that burger, when you start to limit yourself that is when you go back to the comfort food because you have limited yourself so much to the point of craving. This is when you binge, I have gone on weeks of binging on fast food. I love hamburgers and fries and pizza and all of the super doughy greasy things life has to offer!! I know how hard it is. But instead of limiting use your "I Can'ts!" instead replace them with "I'll TREAT myself to a burger next week when I reach this goal as a reward."

hi progo 35
i am new to this site also and it has been very helpful, theres alot of support for you here. im also an emotional eater so i know its tough, i think joining this forum is a good way to start and get help from others when life has got you down.

Thanks

Thank you so much guys. Just reading your replies is uplifting. I think one of my other problems is that even though I'm a very level headed person, I tend to go to extremes. For instance, the last time I went on a successful diet, it turned into an eating disorder and I struggled for months with anorexia. Now, sometimes I feel like I go the other way. Ouch! Today I was thinking about the months in which I was healthy without an eating disorder and pondering how to get back to that...I know all the things I need to do, it's just doing them that seems hard. I'm hoping that as I become more independent (I also don't drive yet at 26), that will also help me access more resources for being in shape, etc.
