Need help, what happened to me today?!

Earlier in the week, I signed up for Bally Total Fitness. I had been wanting to join a gym for years now, and their offer was too good to pass up. They told me they'd call to set up a free session with a personal trainer for my first initial workout. I scheduled the workout for today and had a blast. The trainer was extremely helpful and motivating, and gave me a ton of tips as well.

We went through all sorts of exercises based upon the routine he felt was best tailored to meet my fitness goals(turning fat into muscle and seeing muscle definition). The session lasted an hour and I really enjoyed it, he worked every single body group and pushed me to my limits(but in a respectful and helpful way).

Here's the problem, when we went over to the "stretch" area to cool down and just stretch, I started feeling really dizzy. I suddenly felt this rush feeling of something flowing through my arms, almost like a pins and needles sensation, but not exactly the same. I immediately told him and he had me sit down and stated that it was most likely lactid acid being released throughout my body and that it's normal after a hard workout. This sensation of dizziness and the feeling in my arms lasted about 20 mins until he gave me juice to drink, and the dizziness left. I wish I could say that was it, but then as I drove home, I had to pull over(about 15 mins after the whole dizzy thing) to vomit. I just couldn't hold it in any longer.

I was bummed because I was looking forward to start working on my fitness in the new year, but I don't feel like going through those two things every time I have a good workout. Was it just because I was sedentary and a novice at working out? Is this something normal? For anyone curious as to if I ate beforehand, I just had a bowl of organic oat cereal with cold milk. The people at Bally had told me to make sure to eat before I came to the workout, but I didn't want to overdue it.

Sorry for the length of this post, and thanks for any helpful advice.

*Extra Note* My trainer said to eat a form of protein when I got home, preferably eggs. I made 3 egg whites with a piece of whole wheat nut toast. Is that a good option for a post-workout meal?*

I'm certainly no expert, but it sounds like a lack of protein before the workout, combined with probably overdoing the workout. If you've been sedentary and the workout pushed you close to your limits, it was I expect a shock to the body. Also, you didn't mention if you were drinking water and staying hydrated during the workout, that could also contribute. After the workout, for best muscle growth results, usually a fast absorbing protein and simple carb are best (about the only time simple carbs are good, whole wheat is great before the workout or any other time). Eggs are good, but a whey protein shake would be even better.

my first question is are you diabetic?

If not i think you have just experienced a good workout. Im guessing you are new to lifting(just haven't done it in a while) and if so that first day back if you go hard you will feel like u said. When you finished lifting did you run before you stretched or did you just stop lifting and go sit and stretch? This could be a reason.

When i lift i will lift and then run a 400m cool down and then stretch.

Not sure why, but I go through a lesser variation of what you describe whenever I go back to working out after an extended break. Not sure why, only happens the first day back. After that, everything is fine. I'd be curious to see if this is a one time thing for you as well. Could also have been a lot of exertion, on a somewhat empty stomach.

Sorry to smirk but that experience is "funny." Sorry to be an ass but it's always nice to see novice puke. I've seen tons of people puke when they go back to playing basketball again. With that said man, when was the last time you did physical excercise for over 45 minutes? Sex does not count, alright.

My GUESS is that your body was just not used to it and MILK + CEREAL is not a good pre-workout meal. If you are anything like me, milk before workout is BAD news. I am guessing again but since the food is sitting in your stomach and trying to be digested while you are excercising and the blood is rushing to the muscle. Something got to give man. That would probably explain the dizziness and vomitting. How close and big was that meal before you excercise? If you have to try a small sandwich (peanut butter and jelly) 1 hour before OR if you don't feel hungry, eat a banner 30 minutes prior.

Once again, those are just my guess and in if you continue working out for another month; you will look at this post and laugh as well. Thank you for sharing and I hope it's not serious.

You pushed hard and your body isnt used to it. Dont over analyse the situation. Your body will get used to it in no time.

Keep at it, it probably wont happen the next time. Sounds like the sugar from the juice is what you needed. Be sure you're eating enough to sustain your new activity.

Happy workouts!

I get vomity my first workout after an extended break too, especially if I'm not continually replacing fluids-carry that water bottle with you

Exactly the same as these people, when i first started training my legs, i felt f**king horrible the first couple of times, but my body adapted in no time.

Thanks for the help and advice guys! Nice to know that there is a place to turn to for it. To answer a few questions, No I am not diabetic, and in regards to the size of the pre-workout meal, it was a regular sized bowl and was eaten about a half hour before the workout.

I took some notes and will go out today to buy some of the things suggested: Peanut butter, bananas, etc.

Thanks again!

good luck bro and post back to see if the issue lessens. Hopefully, you will not feel nausea at all after a couple week. Like Tom, when I started to do more squats again, I almost threw up. To make a long story short, I've been training for over a year consistently and thought it would be "fun" to do 20 squat reps. First time that I did it at a "comfortable" weight, I almost threw up and the only reason why i didn't was because I ate very little prior to working out. For the next hour, I was nauseated and this was like a month ago.

What you felt happened to the best of us; unfortunately, it also happened to us as well. :)
