Need help from ex-smokers or other knowledgable folk

Hi, my name is Jo. I have a background in long distance running and other sports and gave it all up around eight years a go for an awful but fun lifestyle.

Anyway, I have grown up a bit now and given up smoking and would really like to get fit. Now I never expected to step right back into four mile jogs everyday but I'm finding the pain barrier just too much, even over short distances. Can anyone give me some advice on how to healthily and sustainably get back into cardio exercise?

Thanks

start small. If you hadn't worked out and run in 8 years, that is a long, long time and you're basically starting from scratch.

You are in the most frustrating time frames of getting back in shape... the beginning. Go for short, slow paced jogs, and often.

Don't expect a certain level of performance from yourself, find out what you're starting with and work with that.

Your body is very accepting of past bad habits. It takes about 3-4 months to completely get the traces of smoking out of your system so be patient.
