I want to buy a set of adjustable weight dumbbells to use to build upper body muscle. The trouble I am having is I don't know how to build a routine. I would like to keep it around a half hour because I use an elliptical also.
I would suggest looking around at some of the diaries! A lot of people put their workouts in their diary to keep track of what they did! This is a great opportunity for others to get ideas for their workouts!
If you're just starting out, I would suggest trying to do workouts that work your entire body, and incorporate a bit of cardio (like mountain climbers or burpies!)! You also want to make sure you're switching it up!
Good luck! And don't hesitate to ask any specific questions!
That's great that you're looking into getting a set of adjustable dumbbells! Very useful!
The main thing that you want to keep in mind for doing an upper body routine is to keep your muscle groups balanced... If you do a bicep exercise, make sure you also do a triceps exercise as well, and so on. If you start to get that rounded-shoulder posture, chances are you're doing too much chest and not enough back exercises.
The basic muscle groups of the upper body that you should target with a beginner program are:
I would also suggest balancing things out by including the trunk musculature and the lower body... You don't want to look like the guy in the gym who focuses only on his upper body (big upper body, teeny little legs)!
Good luck!
You will find some exercises here, keep in mind that for many of the band exercises, you can substitute with dumbbells to do the same exercise.
