Need Cardio But had surgery =[

Well I havent visited these forums for a while, kinda fell off track in my fitness life since my surgery. I had a bone removed from my right ankle and my achilles tendon attacted to the bone, (March 5th). I have been doing normal free weight excercises, but I miss jogging sooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo much. I am not going to be able to run for a while either =\. I want to swim but now its starting to get a bit cold out and I do not have a gym membership. I really need my cardio to help me slim back down.

Walking is a really good start and it has the added bonus of being free :)

If you live in an apartment, or work in a multi-story building - use the stairs - again they're free.

Do you have a bike? or do you know someone who would loan you one? Free! plus the scenery changes quicker.. hehe

Just pack on some extra layers and go for it!

Here's to your recovery picking up because I know all too well about being out of it for a while myself...

Good Luck!

Doh... Had another thought.

Since you've had this surgery, you do have a very good chance your footfall has changed on that side. You may want to consider having your feet checked out to see if you are supinated any. This may require a change in the shoes you wear.

Carry on :)

Nah I got shoes and orthotics (sorry for miss spell) all from guidance of my foot doctor. I am not sure if I can even bike yet maybe. Is there machines at the gym that have zero impact for cardio?

Zero impact??? Not that i'm aware of. Does the gym have a pool?? Swimming would be zero impact on your foot/leg.

Something else you can ask your doc is to talk to someone in PT (physical therapy).

They have exercises designed to strengthen the ligs/tendons/muscles in that area. I know.. I broke the same ankle twice in two years - no fun ..

Plus, if they're any good, they can guide you on which exercises you can do now and how to work back up to where you want to be.

ok.. my $0.02 of thought :)

Yeah I had a knee surgery a few years back and the swimming helped keep me relatively slim (it's hard not to put on a few pounds after laying around in the hospital with your visitors bringing you all sorts of crap to eat) but also aided with the rehab process.

Sorry to hear about that bro.

You could perform bodyweight exercises in a circuit fashion to get some cardio to. Try this:

Pushups- 15 reps
Walking or Stationary lunges- 15 steps/leg
Sit ups- 20-30 reps
Planks- hold 30-60 seconds
Squats- 30 reps
Hip Bridges- 30 reps
Handstands against wall-hold for time 30-60 seconds
Rest 60 seconds and repeat 2-3 times.

This will get your heart rate up pretty good.
Good Luck!
