Need advice

Hello,

I came here to ask for some advice and need suggestions on what to do with my workout plan. I am a complete novice when it comes to gym equipment (only things I know: treadmill and bike)

I joined and started going to the gym 2 days ago in hopes of changing my life. I am 22 years old, 200 lbs and 5 feet 5 inches tall.

For now I've just started using the treadmill for 3 days now doing a 60 minute session with running and walking intervals. And doing the bikes for 30 minutes.

So now I ask should I continue on doing the cardio then move my way up with weights? Like I said, I am a complete novice at this and just started 2 days ago so I hope you guys can suggest a very simple plan for me to follow. I plan to go to the gym everyday and is this also a good idea?

To have an idea of what goal I have in mind:

Weight loss
Build muscle

Thank you!

-James

Yes, I'd start on the weights, probably hitting them 3 times a week and working cardio around that. Google 'full body workout routine' or pick up a good book, such as the New Rules of Lifting to get you started. There are a million of them out there. The important part is to train hard and train consistently. Try to stay away from routines built around machines or curls. If it includes any combination of squats, deadlifts, rows, dips, pullups, etc., it's probably fine.

You should do both cardio and weight lifting. You need to build muscle while burning fat. This will help you burn fat even faster.

Don't forget to mix up your routine! This will help keep you from getting bored and help make sure you are working out all of your muscle groups.

Good old fashioned running, push ups, biking, and simple weight lifting exercises (curls, squats, and bench press) will help you lose weight and build muscle.

You'll also need to watch your calorie intake to ensure you are burning more calories than you are consuming. But don't starve yourself - otherwise your body will go into starvation mode and start storing fat which will be harder to burn.

I agree with DEF a good (and simple) full body routine to start. That with your cardio will get you headed in the right direction......
