Name 5 people...

Name 5 people that you know (or knew) with cancer.

I know this is a wierd thread, and no, I'm not morbid. I'm just wondering if this is common for people in other areas. Where I live, you pretty much can't find anyone who couldn't tell you 5 people they know (even distantly) with cancer. Honestly, I'm not a wierdo, just curious.

1. my mom's mom
2. my dad's mom
3. my neighbor
4. an ex client
5. my father in laws' dad

(could name more if I thought for a bit)

I think I know where you are going with this. In many urban areas with heavy industry the levels of polution of the air, water, soil, etc. are very high. THe EPA has reduced it a lot in the last 20 years, but in the 50's, 60's and 70's a lot of toxic stuff was completely unregulated. I live in an area that had a lot of metal processing and plating industry (jewelry, trophies, electrical and electronic contacts, etc.), and the toxic chemicals were just dumped on the ground, in the water and in landfills. It seems like in every household there is at least one person with cancer of some type: stomach, kidney, liver, lung, skin, etc. for the older people, and lukemia for the kids. Another reason to keep fit and eat right! A lot of studies find regular exercise and a good eating significantly reduce your chances of any kind of cancer!

Yup. I live in an area surrounded by oil refineries and chemical plants. There are tons of them here. I grew up in this area, so did my husband, and our families are here. We couldn't imagine moving off and being far away from our families. Yet sometimes, I wonder if we'll regret it.

The refineries pay really well. They allow tradesmen to make six-figure incomes with overtime, and have excellent benefits, retirement, vacation, etc. Sometimes, though, when I'm washing my husband's work clothes and can smell the oil and stuff in them, I worry.

Then again, I guess most anywhere you go, there is some sort of pollution source.

1. My aunt
2. 2 of my uncles
3. My cousin
4. A very good friend
5. 3 of my grandparents

I can go on for more. Cancer is pretty big in my family.

I live in an area known as the "cancer belt". It is heavily populated with refineries. Deschain, ur from TX aren't u? We may live in the same area.

I can only list my mom's dad.

However-- everyone in my family has bumped around quite a bit.

The thing that has not been mentioned yet as a cause of cancers is radiation--electromagnetic.

We do know it causes all sorts of fun conditions, but like has been said, proper food and exercise does wonders. The main problem with this practice, however is what foods you can locate through the normal outlets have pesticides, preservatives, and all the rest. -And these are FRUITS AND VEGGIES. Meats often have hormones or other issues with their treatment/diet which affect the consumer.

The best way to avoid the issues of those sorts of things is to either:

1. Grow/raise your own.
2. Purchase directly from farms that engage in organics.
3. Purchase organic food (most often from co-ops) from conventional outlets.

Otherwise, your chances of keeping at optimum health are still compromised.

a friend of mine said that to clean pesticides off of fruit and veggies...to put
1 Tbsp. salt and 1 tsp. lemon juice in water and soak the fruit and veggies in it for about 15 min. and them clean them w/a brush. not sure how true this is, but i've been using this method.

I have never looked into that method, and it is good to know.

I DO know, however, that some chemical pesticides cannot be cleansed no matter what you do. Some foods are actually engineered differently (monsanto soy beans for one) so that they can handle MORE pesticides. Now, even if those pesticides ARENT used, you then have a genetically modified food which has a totally different effect in your system. - And what little evidence we have of the outcome of such things shows that the body, at the very least, gets less nutrition out of them.

-My grandmother(kidney)
-Family friend(lung)
-Another family friend(lung)
-Friends mom(brain)
-Neighbor(kidney)

I have a strong feeling my father has lung cancer also, I have'nt seen him in 10 years but he's a very heavy smoker so I suppose it's only a matter of time.

this is true, but it's like who knows anymore. we just have to try to make the right choices. organic tends to run higher in price and nowadays, they seem to label everything organic, so who knows if it's even true, or if they are just selling the label and allowing companies to label organic. oh well...lol!

- my aunt/godmother- lung cancer, spread to brain
- another aunt - uterus and stomach lining
- grand father- prostate
- another aunt- breast cancer
- best friends mother- colon cancer

I could go on. I know many ppl that have been affected by cancer, and a lot of patients that I got to know very well that were affected by it as well. Out of all of these people two of them beat it for over 10 years now. My aunt with cancer of the uterus and stomach lining currently looks to be in th clear.

Grandfather - deceased due to cancer
Aunt (his daughter) - deceased due to cancer
Wife's Aunt - recovering from breast cancer
Wife's old friend - remission from ovarian cancer

I'm sure if I think harder I can double that list.
I have actually had surgery as an infant (14 months old) to remove a baseball sized cyst from my right armpit.
thank god it was just a benign cyst of fluid, but it did ruin any chance for symmetrical pecs. I can live with that.

my deceased aunt
my deceased godmother
my uncle
my good friend (she's only 19...)
my sister's, sister inlaw

My aunt and godmother both died from it.. My aunt lived 25 years with it until it become overburden for her.. She tried very hard to the last minute. Towards the last week she would talk to my mom about what she wanted at her funeral due to dreams she had of never recovering.. My godmother it came out of nowhere where she had a brain tumor and within 2 weeks she passed away.

I actually only know 2 ppl who have had and beat cancer.
my nan beat breast cancer at 63yrs old
and my mate beat leukemia at 7yrs old

On both sides of my family all the folks who "passed on" had a stroke.

This may seem slightly off topic but I know a guy who is 83, he has had a stroke, 2 heart attacks and cancer. He still rides his bike to the shops every day.
I hope I'm that tough at 83
