My Summer Weight-loss Diary

Happy birthday for the other day Hanabi!!!

Looks like you're doing really well, 26" waist?? OMG! Teeny tiny!

Thank you, Lucy!! :)

Woah! swimming for 5 hours is amazing, my God you have good endurance! Go Hanabi!!

Oh my gosh, not like actually swimming laps or anything, if that's what you were thinking! More like just playing, throwing kids into the water, and sunbathing. xD

------------------------------------------

Weigh-in: 60.4 this morning! Doesn't seem like much, but it is almost half a kilo.... And 23.6% on BF.
Liked I said, yesterday went really well. And I think today should, as well!
I work just from about 2-6 or so, so planning my meals around that....

10:00- tuna sandwich
12:00- a cucumber and a couple turkey slices
2:00- cottage cheese and an apple
4:00- Wasa crackers and string cheese
6:30- grilled salmon!!! and a salad

Yeah, went grocery shopping with my mom yesterday, and convinced her to buy salmon- my favorite fish to grill! We also found this super deal on some boxed salads. You know, the fancy kind that comes in plastic containers, and the original price was $7.00. But for some reason, probably because it was about to wilt, they were marked down to $0.99! So we snatched up a bunch of them- I'll be eating some huuuge salads in the next few days!

Oh, and I'm back to the gym today! Going to do the hardest intervals I can take (I have been doing around 6.7 mph for slow, up to 7.5 for the fast speed), and then a legs weight training. :)

------------

Oh man! I was about do update my progress pictures, but I just realized that I resized them all too small to see!! Is there any way to revert pictures to their original after you've already saved them? vv

Oh! By the way:

I bought a few of Lyle MacDonald's eBooks yesterday: The Rapid Fat Loss Solution, The Ultimate Diet 2.0, and the Guide to Flexible Dieting. (was quite expensive, but I'd heard such good things about them on other forums)

They really are all very good. The RFLS book is basically detailing a short-term plan to lose a lot of fat quickly, sort of a modified PSMF, to use if you have a special event or competition or to jump-start a weightloss program. Normally those quick diet soltions are bad, but Lyle Macdonald seems to be such an expert that I'm inclined to trust what he says even about this one! The UD2.0 is a very interesting diet, geared towards people who are already quite lean (under 22% BF for women), so doesn't quite apply to me yet, but I may put it to use in the future. It's quite strict, but sounds solid. And then the GFD one is a bit more general, a lot of principles I already know, but there's so much good info in there about losing fat sanely.

They're all great books- the beginnings are all filled with scientific information and explanations about how the body works with food and exercise, and the plans themselves are well explained and even tailored to different categories of people as far as body fat and exercise levels.

Has anyone else read these? I'd highly recommend them. :)

That is awesome! You are so fast! Intervals are great... I've gotta do some more of those at the gym. I love doing intervals too because I feel like the time goes by faster during my workout! BTW I can't believe you could last 5 hours swimming in a pool. I'm lucky if I can last 10 minutes :) Hah! I'd love to start swimming though - it's SUCH great exercise! My mom does it EVERY morning!

WOW! So impressed with your jogging speeds and swimming endurance...not to mention the tiny waist. You are quite the inspiration, girl!!

Thanks! Yeah, intervals do make it more fun, I think, and I end up going further faster, too.

Thank you! Although, honestly I wasn't actually swimming for 5 hours!! I just meant I was at the pool for 5 hours, playing with the kid I baby-sit! xD

----------------

Well, today did NOT go as planned!
I made it to the gym in the morning, but it rained so much so hard, that I couldn't get home afterward!! So many streets were flooded over. So I ended up just spending my day at the mall, trying on tons of clothes, and Barnes and Noble, borrowing their books. :D And since I hadn't even brought money with me, all I had was my gas station credit card, so that's where I got all my food for the morning and afternoon!

Total food:
-4 protein bars over the course of the morning and afternoon (800 calories, 56g protein)
-strawberries at work (50 cal)
-for dinner, 3 chicken breasts (~300 cal, ~40g protein), salad and cucumber (50 cal), and 3 pears (300 cal) for a treat
total: 1500 calories

Hey!! hahaha, it was raining here too when i went to the gym, not that hard though!!! but now its all sunny :)
Well you didnt splurge at all!! no chips, no dips, no cookies, no muffins.. all of which can be found at your nearest gas station!
Good job!

Just going thru your diary and noticed you don't have 1 rep!!!

Sooo...Im gonna rep you. You have worked soo hard and are doing so well, the inspiration to others itself is worth it...and probably even more

Congrats!

(And I cant believe you ate 3 chicken breasts! Good for you!)

Oh, you're lucky you only got a little nice rain!
And thanks! You're right- I actually didn't even notice that I had managed to not let the situation get the better of me! :)

Thanks!! I'm not entirely sure what a "rep" is, honestly, but I assume it's good. :D And yeah, I did have quite a bit of chicken, haha. I didn't have much access to protein the first half of the day!

-----------------------------------

My plan for the day is basically same as yesterday, as I've only got work at 2:00 again. However, I plan to actually follow it this time! :D And today's a 4-meal day-- I've come to find the pattern I like, in terms of at least a little bit of calorie cycling, is always doing the same 300 cal meals, but either 4 or 5, every other day.

10:00 tuna sandwich
12:00 V8 and cottage cheese
2:00 string cheese and Wasa crackers
5:30 grilled salmon and salad

-----------------------------------

Okay, progress picture update!
Taken this morning, ones with and without those capris I was trying to fit into. And I put the comparisons in there, from just over/under two weeks ago.

I don't know about you, but I think I already see some changes...maybe...

Thanks to everyone for the positive feedback!! :D

Ended up having an atypical day...

I didn't have to work today after all, so I had a lot of free time, decided to make today a "maintenance" day so that I could relax and eat more without worrying about it, since I'd decided it anyway, haha. What ended up happening though was that I had a whole carton of cottage cheese (480 cal) and 4 packets of flavored oatmeal (640 cal) and 3 apples (300 cal), in addition to my regular, meals, by about noon! And since I am committed to sticking with my regular meals even if I go over on one or two, I knew I'd end up over my limit for the day.

And while I did consider just giving in completely and going crazy, eating even more, especially when my mom and sister left the house for a bit...instead, I spent 2.5 hours shovelling sand! It was actually kinda fun; if I were to forego the academic/phD/scientist route, I'd probably work doing physical labor. xD And anyway, it was quite a workout, shovelling wet sand and carrying it across the backyard. If I'm sore tomorrow, I'll bet money it's from that rather than any number of pull-ups and bench presses I did this morning. Haha.

Soooo, I may have had more than I intended, but I put the extra carbs to work at least, made myself some money ($20 from my mom!). And I didn't feel like straying from my plan for the rest of the day either. So, overall, not so bad! :)

So, after I posted yesterday, I actually continued to over-indulge...at my last meal, around 7, I had 2 apples, a bunch of rye crackers, and a protein bar. Oh, and I also had some extra salty soup earlier in the day. :D All in all, I think my calories were around 2500 or so. Pretty good, as far as "off" days go, I guess!

Question----
Does anybody else notice that they slip-up worst right after really great days? Because I've noticed a pattern like that for myself! Like yesterday, I was so pleased with my weight and measurements and my eating habits, felt like I looked really great, dressed up cute and tried on a bunch of clothes and was amazed at how good I was looking....and then proceded to sabotage myself! Isn't it weird? That's happened quite often before, too....

So with some extra water weight- back to 61.5 kg. But 23.2% BF! And, though my waist has expanded a bit, my thigh measurement is just over 21 inches!

Plan for the day is----
exercise: run ~30 minutes
10:00 tuna sandwich
12:30 string cheese
2:30 protein bar
5:30 grilled fish and steamed vegetables

Have a little free time this morning, so I thought I'd answer this questionnaire, since I don't believe I ever did in the beginning....

-----------------------

How much weight do you want to lose?
-I think about 7 more kg, to hit around 55kg. But more than that, I'd like to eventually aim for 15% body fat and to fit comfortably into size 24 jeans again.

What is the timeframe for reaching your target weight?
-Preferably by August 1, or at least before the beginning of the school semester mid-August.

How do you want to accomplish your goal (what methods do you want to use)?
-regular exercise, moderate and healthy eating habits

Who or what can support you in reaching your goal?
-all of the people on this forum! no one else really knows...

How realistic is your goal?
Very! My original goal of 50kg might not have been quite so reasonable, considering it was from when I was still a teenager, just graduated from HS, and not fully matured. But I think bumping it up 5 kg (that's over 10 lbs) should make it okay.

When will you start?
-Already have!

What is your current height and weight?
-Around 61kg and 170cm.

If you were at an ideal weight now, what would that weight be?
-Between 50 and 55kg.

At what weight would you like to be at four months from now?
-same as above

Why do you want to lose weight?
-Because being at this heavier weight doesn't feel like "me." I've never been anything more than at least moderately skinny, so it feels strange to me. Not necessarily even losing weight, but losing fat and eating more healthily will probably also help my running performance, my health, and, of course, I'd feel much better about my appearance and how I wear clothes!

And also a bit because of peer/family pressure... it seems very much a Japanese/asian sterotype that you must be thin, and that part of my family has no problem getting onto me about it! My aunt has even told me on multiple occasions that all women should weigh less than 50 kg and that being fat is "not Japanese." So even though I'm actually not fully Japanese, I still feel the pressure from my family and from the rest of society that asians are just supposed to be thin!

Do you want to lose weight for a specific life event such as wedding or reunion? If so, when is that event?
-Yes, for my friend's wedding at the beginning of August, my trip to New York also in August, and by the new semester, so I can buy tons of new clothes for school and not worry about having to get more if I continue losing weight!

What obstacles could get between you and your weight loss goals?
-My impatience and corresponding affinity for crash dieting, for sure. It's a hard habit to break, slashing calories to impossible levels and exercising way too much and losing half a kilo a day...and then, the inevitable binge that comes afterward as well.

Why do you think that you now have a weight problem?
-Well, I don't really have a weight problem in terms of health, but the reasons I gained weight are a few... For the main one, just the lifestyle change that came with going to university and not living at home meant less time to exercise and more access to unhealthy foods. So where before, even if I did overeat, it was usually on veggies, whereas once I was introduced to sugary cereals and unlimited amounts of ice cream, that really packed on the pounds! And of course the reason I have stayed at a heavier weight for so long as to do with the crash dieting: lose 3kg in a week, put back on 2.9999kg after the weekend- at best.

What lifestyle changes do you think would help you lose weight?
-Learning how to have a moderate calorie intake, learning not to eat way too little or to binge uncontrollably.

Have you lost weight in the past? If so, what has worked in the past to help you lose weight?
-Yes, I had a big success around 9th grade, actually. I basically followed the Body for Life program, which included 3 high-intensity cardio sessions, weightlifting, and many small meals a day. That was my first introduction to fitness and healthy eating, and though I didn't really do it to lose weight, I did, and I got so much fitter and have been exercising ever since! So I'm trying to emulate that again now.

Why do you believe that you did not lose weight or you gained the weight back?
-A combination of undisciplined eating habits and then stupid choices on my part that made it inevitable that I would stay stuck in a cycle of crash diets. Because I never could get over the fact that I kept wanting any extra weight I gained OFF and OFF NOW which just lead to more and more weight gain.

What, if anything, has not worked for you in the past in helping you to lose weight? Why do you think it did not work?
-Trying crazy diets, eating 500-1000 calories or fewer per day, exercising for over an hour each day.

Do you cook at home often? If so, what do you cook?
-Eat at home, yes; actually cook, no. The most I cook is to microwave or grill things. I don't like complicated recipes or mixing foods together or complex flavors!

How often do you go out to eat? Where do you go?
-I go out maybe once a month with my friends.

What are your three favorite foods?
-apples, broccoli, and fish (tuna, salmon....and I love sashimi!)

What are your three favorite restaurants?
-Panera bread, Starbucks, and a little sushi place near my university.

What are three things you can do differently when it comes to food?
- 1. Eat no less than 1200 calories and no more than 2000 calories every day. 2. Not eat massive amounts of food because "I deserve it" or "I just want it." 3. Eat because I need fuel and not for any other reason.

If you woke up tomorrow and your body was exactly the way you want it, what would be different?

-I would be quite a bit thinner and more toned, 24-25 inch waist, visible muscles, no pudgy stomach or thighs that smoosh together.

Do you eat when you are not hungry?
-Yes, a bad habit I picked up in college. I eat for recreation sometimes. vv

Do you binge eat (large amounts at a time)?
-Yes, usually as a result of eating way too little for a few days, but even now, the habit seems to still be there when I'm eating more adequately.

Do you hide your food or eat in secret?
-Yes, because I am ashamed when I binge eat and even when I eat regularly sometimes because my family doesn't understand the way I eat now with so many small meals.

Do you eat when you are sad, nervous, or depressed?
-I used to, not so much lately.

Do you eat as a reward?
-Yes, a reward for eating very little the day before! xD

Do you eat while watching TV or using the computer?
-Yes, quite often!

What do you normally eat for a meal?
-some protein and some carbs

What type of snacks do you eat?
-I don't really have snacks, mostly everything is a cross between a meal and a snack.

In terms of exercise, what, if anything, are you currently doing?
-Since high school, I've been doing cardio and/or weight training at least 4-5 times a week.

Where do you go for exercise? A local public gym? School/work gym? Home?
-I love the Y! Sometimes I run in the park, also, when it isn't too hot.

What, if anything, are your three favorite types of exercise?
-running, any strength training, and using the elliptical.

What is your daily/weekly/monthly/yearly motivation to move towards your goals?
-I want to live a healthy lifestyle, and if I don't start now, when will I ever?

Do you have rewards for certain goals?
-Not really....just that I plan on buying a whole new wardrobe once I finish losing as much weight as I want to, since a lot of my old clothes I expect will still be too small and the ones I have now are already getting too big!

Yes that happens with me too! Sometimes even the opposite like I'll have a bad weigh-in and just feel like giving up so I binge. Your not alone though!
I liked the questionaire too - very informative!

The slip ups after doing great for a day or even days is common. In my case it's because I think that making it through one day of good eating makes it easier the next day. In reality, it takes weeks, and for some people even months to establish a habit. And breaking habits are just as hard to do.

Your first reason for loosing weight is just like mine, I felt that I was wearing clothes even naked and I couldn't stand to look at mirrors because I didn't want to believe that was me staring back. I'm still iffy w/ mirrors and cameras but, it's all a progress.
I totally get family pressure, but they're the only people we can never get rid of. As for weighing less than 50kgs, not everyone is born with that physical make up. Not too long ago my grandma told me that now I look like a person, in my mind I didn't take that as a compliment. I was thinking, "WTF did I look like then?"

AHAHAHAH, that made me laugh, only because whenever I cook or follow a recipe (which, lets just say happens once a month), I tend to see a cross between cooking and chemistry, but really thats just me :) And also, I dont think anybody else, apart from my mom, knows about my weight loss either, maybe because I dont like talking about to my friends just becuse they're the type of people that say:"ahh noo you're fine just the way you are blahblahblah" yadayadayada :p
ANYWAYS, all in all,I think that you're doing really well, and its great to see how motivated you are!

Oh, good to know I'm not the only crazy one!! :D

Thank you for the reassurance. You're right, I've got a while before I'll have completely broken the habit.

Sorry you've got that family pressure too...they sure can say hurtful things sometimes. :(

Haha, you know, some of my friends say things like that too, about how cooking is just like chemistry, but for some reason I never got that. :D

----------------------------------------------------

I think I may have just identified one of my problems yesterday-- vegetables! I was steaming some vegetables to eat, and for some reason decided to glance and the packaging to check my servings, which I never do, assuming vegetables are so low calorie I don't need to. Turns out, I made about 200 calories worth of vegetables, which I would have assumed was only 50! 200 calories isn't a lot, I know, but I definitely might have eaten even more than that, and since I haven't got a lot of weight to lose, I feel like there's not much leeway in meeting my calories. A couple times eating vegetables during the day could put me back at maintenance! I'm not going to stop eating vegetables, of course, or probably even as many (broccoli and cauliflower are like my two favorite foods ever), but I will pay more attention and factor the correct calories into my total.

Different work schedule today....got to take my charge to school in the morning as well as watch her after school's over, so I'm working from 7-9 in the morning as well. Messes up my gym schedule, which I don't like (hello, OCD; I got annoyed the day before yesterday because I got to the gym 5 minutes after 8:00 vv). But that's okay, I'll just push it back an hour.

Speaking of exercise, yesterday I ran for 40 minutes instead of my usual max of 30, and all at above 7.0 mph!

Exercise: gym at 9:00, run 5k, legs strength training
11:00 tuna sandwich
1:00 cucumber and string cheese
3:00 protein bar
6:00 grilled chicken or fish and only 2 cups of vegetables :D

Slight change in meals today:
10:30- tuna sandwich (300)
12:30- cucumber and 3 egg whites (150)
2:30- protein bar (210)
5:45- 3 large carrots and a glass of V8 (120), grilled chicken (150), mixed nuts (100)

Just posting to make sure I have a good record! :)
