I've never been terribly overweight, not so much to provide enough motivation for a serious program, or the sort of permanent program you really need to adopt. But things took a turn for the worse a few years ago - type 2 diabetes, plugged up arteries and bypass surgery. Some changes were in order.
I'd previously done calorie counting - it was absolutely necessary for me. I was once a scientist, and I can get pretty obsessive about recording data. I used a few of the more elaborate web- and iPhone-based systems - they were all rather tedious to use, and so I stopped using them. I've been using pencil and paper until recently, when I wrote my own simple iPhone app (a sedentary activity - wintertime only! - but it does take my mind off the frig). I'd better not mention the name, but it's the purple one (my wife's choice). I especially like knowing that yesterday I lost 0.06 lbs - not measurable, but something I can calculate and feel good about. Not much, but this is a long-term pursuit.
I have 13 lbs to go to be officially "not overweight". Winter and the holidays is always a difficult period - if only it would warm up I could get back on my bike (still a foot of snow on the ground here, 4 degrees F tonight).
It's great being among folks that know the significance of the number "3500".
