My road to being lighter :)

So I joined this site less then a week ago with the hopes of losing 70lbs.

So far in about 4-5 days, I have lost 5 lbs :) I haven't really started exercising yet but, just watching what I eat.

I am really big on fast food and not eating veggies :( So, in the last couple of days I have tried to eat at least 1-2 cups of steamed veggies with my dinner but, I had fast food yestarday for lunch but, I did get a smaller portion then I usually would.

I hope to start some light exercises this week :)

Grrrrr, I gained 2 pounds since I weighed my self yestarday.

I did weigh my self later in the day (after eating) yestarday and I have been told that your weight can change up to 2 pounds a day depending on when you weigh yourself. I hope that is the reason *crosses fingers*.

Well, I'm back up a pound. I really should start exercising but I am starting my last 3 weeks of classes and I have many assignments due and exams coming up next week.

Maybe, I am just using excuses :( Should I be weighing myself everyday? It seems to go up and down everyday but, if I wait like 2-3 days it goes down???

try not to weigh yourself every day, once a week is fine. your weight will fluctuate naturally from day to day depending on how hydrated you are and other bodily functions.

First you should never eat Fast food even if its a smaller portion its just the worst!! And and its good weight yourself everyday as long as its not an emotional roller-coaster for you but to document everything and stay away from fast food you will loose weight quick!
I would also stay away from all sugar drinks and greasy foods at home now adays its very easy to create the fast-food experience at home.

Well, I haven't been on for a while but, .... I have had progress with my weight loss. I am down 8.5 lbs, and I am really watching everything I eat (keeping a diary). I also bought the biggest loser for wii, which has me working out every other day and on the days I don't do that I have been going to the gym :)

I am finding that the last couple of days I am losing in very small amounts like 0.2 lbs or today I lost 0.7 lbs.

It is a bit discouraging to have low numbers but, a loss in weight big or small is still a loss. Also, I have been told that a slow steady weight loss is better for you as I am losing it the proper way (watching what I eat and exercise) and less likely to yo-yo then fad diets.

Well, I'm down another 0.4 lbs. I have been sticking to my exercise routine. Yestarday, was really hard to get up and go to the gym but, I am gald I did.

I am not eating enough calories :( I'm suppose to be eating 1753 calories but, some days I only have 1200-1500 calories. I am not doing on purpose but, I think I maybe being to strict on what I eat and, I have missed snacks sometimes (which would make up those few 100 calories, I am missing).

You are doing fine. Just think about how your body is reacting. If you are hungry (and I mean honestly hungry) and go ahead and eat a little more. Just stay focus.

Yes, you seem to be doing fine

A question occurred to me as I was reading your last post, apologies if it is inappropriate here, but maybe someone will know. How long does it take for a metabolism slowdown to kick in if you start undereating?

i.e say if you are supposed to be on 1500 cals a day ...
- if you eat 1000 calories one day and 2000 the next, is it the same as eating 1500 cals each day or has your metabolism slowdown already kicked in and you get a more adverse effect from your 2000 day than a beneficial one from your 1000 day
- is averaging the 1500 cals over a week or two weeks enough without mattering too much what the daily amount is?

Again apoligies for butting in on the thread but maybe someone knows.

Keep up the workouts. Find something you like to do at the gym. All cardio basically has the same goal of making you sweat and raising your heart rate. I keep the gym interesting by trying to beat personal records every week. Its great to see the progress from week to week. Keeping the workout interesting is what is going to keep you coming back to the gym!

Also, regarding the food front. Having a caloric deficency is in my opinion a core element in weight loss. Granted, you don't want to lower it too much, else you end up doing more damage than good. If you find yourself getting hungry (and not bored/thirsty) EAT something! Something Ive learned is that protein rich meats keep me sated for a long time, especially compared to the crap you get in a drive-thru.

Also, youre not realistically going to be seeing much day to day movement on the scale. Its a mediocre measurement of weightloss, because your body is constantly adjusting all day. Considering 2-3 pounds a week is GENERALLY considered a healthy weight loss target (1% of total body weight), your daily tracking seems to be spot on.

Thanks everyone for your responses.

I understand that under eating can be bad and that's why it worries me that I am not eating enough calories but, in all honesty .... I eat when I'm hungry. I try my best to eat every 2-3 hours (sometimes I may miss a snack so I wait an extra hour or two and eat a meal) but, I don't really feel hungry if I miss a snack.

I don't want my body to go into horde mode and hold onto fat but, should I eat more just to get my calories up, even if I'm not hungry???

Wooooo, finally down my first 10 lbs :)

I started off to a rocky start (up and down) but, today is my 12th day of really sticking to watching what I eat and exercising.

The last 2 days, I have been dragging my feet not wanting to exercise but, I did it (mostly because, it's that time of the month, ugh).

I start school on monday and I really hope that inbetween school and homework I can really keep up my exercise *crosses fingers*

Nothing to new today, lost another 0.2 lbs since yestarday.

Really wanted some sugar yestarday, had some fruit instead. I actually got mad at my husband because he didn't want me to get a donut. I know it seems stupid now but, I really wanted that donut, lol but, I curbed the desire with fruit.

Overall, I am feeling a bit down. Not sure why as I have lost almost 11 lbs in less then 2 weeks and I am happy about that but, it just feels like something is missing.

Just wanted to say hi and welcome back :) I myself had been gone for a while (a year, lol) but am back as well.

I'm no expert but you definitely don't want to undereat. You need the energy for your workouts. You need to give your body fuel to do your day to day stuff on top of workouts.

A good way to make sure your calories are in check is to plan ahead and calculate the calories. That way you'll know if you need to add some here or there. Eating a couple hundred under your goal now and then won't hurt, but eating 1200 when it's supposed to be 1700 is a big difference. I would at least try and definitely not go under 1500. That way, if you plan for 1700 but miss a snack or so, then you'll be just under and not way under.

Thanks for the advice Risty. I have really been trying to hit at least 1500 calories for the last couple of days.

Went up 0.2lbs today (first gain in the last 2 weeks). It doesn't bother me too much as it is a small number. I think it is because I didn't work out as much yestarday as I normally do.

Just wondering how you like the biggest loser for wii? My girlfriend and I are starting to eat much healthier than we use to, and we were thinking about something like that to get us motivated to exercise.

Looks like you are making great progress so far!! Keep it up! YOU can do it!
