My Recovery from Obesity

Dr. Q to the rescue! Well, I'm not 100% sure that my arm is a result of that plant, but I showed the pics to my wife and those plants were definitely in our yard last Summer. We can't remember if we saw them this Spring or not. But last year there were 6' tall versions that I weed-whacked down and burned! Somehow, it didn't get me last year. I showed my arm to another friends yesterday who, as a guy who works outdoors everyday, said he gets poison oak and sumac rashes 5 times a year. He took one quick look at my arm and said its definitely poison oak.

Either way, there doesn't seem to be much I can do except keep it clean and dry, covered and try not to scratch.

Down 1.0 pounds today to 373 for a total loss of 84 pounds.

I just realized that I am only 16 pounds from a 100 lb loss. :D That's very exciting.

You'll pass that in May! You should have a great summer. If where you are is like Seattle summer arrives around independence day and you'll be somewhere around 300 by then.

16 pounds away!!! Ah you are doing so fantastic! I say unequivocally that I view you as a source of inspiration...proof that we all can fight to be who we want to be! The smallest or the biggest changes :)

From your mouth to the diet-God's ears, Q! I sure hope that's in my future, because if it is, I'll cut loose on the 4th and do my annual smoked brisket/pulled pork barbecue and invite the whole fam damily.... and all our friends.

Camila, you are so uber-sweet to me, thank you! But I agree with what you said... where our weight is concerned, we are who we choose to be for the for most part. I was (and am) grossly overweight because I let it happen. Now, I'm changing that.

-----------------

Weighed in at 371.4 this morning. Down 1.6 pounds for a total loss of 85.6 lbs. The percentage of my starting weight I've lost is 18.73%. I'm blown away by that. I've lost weight faster than my brain can keep up, so I still think I weigh 400+ pounds.

The bad news is that I start a 12 day course of steroids today. Saw the dermatologist and she said it's definitely a contact rash/hives, but not poison oak, sumac or a phyto-thing like the plant Q helped me ID from my yard (but I still am aware of what those are now, so thanks, Q). She doesn't know what I contacted but that prednasone (sp?) will fix it. Sooooo.... I start taken a mega dose of steroids today; the side effects include water retention and industrial strength hunger/cravings. Yippeee. Wish me luck.

Well I'm glad you've got it figured out. Prednisone sucks! I've had to take it many times over the years for my asthma. The good news is that it will make your arm better, it shouldn't be for very long, and you know what is causing the problem if you gain.

Just keep the long term in mind. Focus on getting your arm better and on the dramatic drop you'll have once you're done with the cycle. Drinking lots of water and exercising will help minimize the bloating. Try to make healthy choices if you need to eat more and you'll be fine. Don't get discouraged and stick around here. Your weight has dropped tremendously so hopefully it will be more of a stall.

371.4 is awesome! You've lost at double the rate that I have this year and I'm doing well. I'm pretty close to dropping your awesome butt out of my sig.

The good news, Donnie, is that your Home Run total is going to jump up. You may challenge Bonds this year and since it's doctor prescribed, they can't stop you.

Glad to see you've dropped below the 375 mark. I'm with Quercus: what you're doing is working, so stick with the plan as best as possible and in your mind try and keep the 'roids as a completely separate issue.

Hey Don, it sucks about the steroids, but it's only 12 days - you should be fine. As Quercus says : keep long term in mind.
You are sooooooooo close to your first huge milestone - you can almost touch it!!
You are doing a great job. Keep up the good work!! :p

Guten Morgen!

Well, I'm up 2.2 pounds today. **Sigh**
Steroids? Dehydrated?? Too much food??? Yes, all of these are true.
Concerned? Nope!

I actually had the best day yesterday that I've had in a LONG time. A Loooong Time. I had more energy and stamina than I've had in forever. My day started at 7am and ended at 3 am. Here's what I did... ya ready?

1. Emptied 60 pieces of lumber (mostly 10 foot 4x4s & 12 foot 2x4s) from my trailer in the front yard to the back yard.
2. Dug 22 post holes 3 feet deep.
3. Went to my youngest son's soccer game, parked far away because I was pulling a trailer, and walked the 1/2 mile each way.
4. Took my deserving family to a treat of Chinese food for an early dinner (3pm) at an old family favorite restaurant.
4. Picked up 2 cubic yards of 3/8-minus gravel and dry set four of the 4x4 posts.
5. Rushed in the house and showered and readied for a night out with my lovely wife.
6. Drove 1-1/2 hours to Portland and watched a talented young lady named Crystal Bowersox in concert at a quaint little venue called the Aladdin.
7. Went out for a late dinner (started at 10.15pm) at a great Tapas restaurant () and ATE til I was happily very full. We had:
- Griddled Bacon Wrapped Date with warm honey
- Octopus a la Plancha “Becerrita”
- Fried Spanish Anchovies with fennel & lemon
- Basque Piperade with duck egg
- Harissa Stewed Spring Squash with sheep’s cheese & mint
- Drunken Pork with avocado salad
- Not one of these dishes was shy of excellent and some were absolutely divine. Good God Almighty, I love great food.
8. Stayed for coffee, then drove my sleeping wife the 1-1/2 drive back.

My back didn't hurt, my energy was still good at the end, and I fit in clothes I hadn't worn since 2008 (I know because I found a ticket stub for "La Traviata" in the back pocket of the pants from the last time I wore them!) Also I FELT good and felt confident. As my wife told me at one point, I "had my man on".

That was the best day I've had/felt in 10 years.

Today, I awoke after only 5 hours of sleep feeling great, my arm looks better, and I'm getting ready to go finish the post setting. Oh... I had a dream that I was outside somewhere at dusk.... and was jogging down the street and laughing with a friend. Who dreams that? Apparently someone very, very satisfied with regaining some of his lost health.

Have a great day, friends.

PS: Thanks for the support, you guys. You rock. The 'roids" have been fine... no moments like this

But I have had the overwhelming urge to bicycle ride the Pyrenees.

Don, I'm sorry you're going through all of that weight. I've been on prednisone since the beginning of this year to treat rheumatoid arthritis. I was started at 20mg daily, then dropped down to 15mg, then 10mg, then 7.5mg, and I'm currently at 5mg. Next Monday I'll be dropping again to 2.5mg for 3 weeks and the hopefully my RA meds will work well enough for me to drop the prednisone completely. My rheumatologist did warn me of the side of effects of weight gain. This was when I was really starting to get serious about weight loss so it scared the crap out of me. All I thought was that I was already overweight and trying to lose and now I had to take something that was going to make me gain? I can tell you though that it was a life safer! I was in so much pain before starting treatment and within 2 days I felt like my old self again. For the most part, I've kept my appetite in check and did not go crazy eating. Certainly nothing like I thought I would. I guess what I'm trying to say is that everyone will be effected by this drug differently. Just stay strong and drink a lot of water to try to keep yourself feeling full. The good news is that you'll only be on it for 12 days which may not be that much time to get the full effect of it.

I'm so happy for you that your weight is coming off the way it is. I can only imagine how exciting it must be to know you're so close to being 100lb down. What you're doing and what you've already done is nothing short of amazing. Be very proud of yourself. :)

I am loving your post from yesterday! It sounds like you had tons of fun with everything!!
Once in a while you have to let your hair down!!
the best day you had in 10 years! Fantastic!! I hope soon you have a lot more!!
Have a great week!

Hey Don, LOOOOOVED your post on the 28th. Glad you felt like a million bucks - it's such a great motivator and also makes the journey worth while!!

We all should be having more of those fabulous days but within moderation though :)

Don, your journey has been amazing and so inspirational!! Your 100lb loss is within arm reach!

Thank you, thank you, thank you all! I'm glad others also get the gist of my mood Saturday/Sunday. I felt (and still feel) GREAT!

I am still keeping very busy and doing things I couldn't/wouldn't have been doing 4 months ago. Yesterday morning, I woke feeling bad that I didn't do cardio the night before, so at 6 am I jumped on the bike and did 9 miles! Then last night I did a high-energy HIIT workout for 20 minutes on the bike, ab workouts, pushups, and some stretching. I feel really good. Oh, and my arm is finally getting better. :D

Weighed down today for the first time in a few days. I'm still slightly above where I was on Friday last, I weigh 372.0, but that's still a 2 lb drop from yesterday's bloat. Total loss is 85 lbs.

Wow, wow & wow...someone has stepped up exercise!! You rock Don!! Fantastic!!!
It's great to hear that you are in such good spirit! :D
Way to go!
oh, and well done on the loss!!! & 85lbs!!! oh my!! Super-Don!
