Hello,

I am starting a journey to loosing weight and living a healthier life style for good. I am an obese and only 24 years old which is depressing as I am only young, and I have been obese for the majority of my life. Despite going on endless diets, slimming world, weight watchers, juice diets etc. I have even resorted to a medication which all that made me do is stain my underwear (I know too much information but its the truth).

Its hard losing weight I have tried in the past and failed, I either give up at the first hurdle or I try hard and never see the result I want. This time its different I am determined to do this and not alone; I have started to get the help from my doctors to get specialist advice, I am now a member of PureGym and I am dedicating time to force myself to do this.

This time it's going to be different I am going to reach my goal.

Please feel free to comment on this whether it is your personal experience or helpful advise, share this if you feel it can help someone or you can just watch me achieve my goal.

Hi, Wheeles02 & a great big welcome to the forum!
This time it's going to be different I am going to reach my goal.
Determination will get you there. You have the advantage of being young. You can do this. We'll be there to support you along the way. This is an excellent place to vent, share your feelings etc. It's whatever you want it to be really. This is your diary. I find my diary is my therapy. Sometimes by the end of a diary post, I have something sorted out & then go back & delete it. Once again- welcome :)

Welcome Wheeles02! I believe you can reach your goal! Keeping up with motivation can be challenging, so let me know if you need some support. I have some effective and easy methods to boost your motivation. From experience I know that weight loss is integrated process. My advice is focus not only on the gym but also on changing your eating habits. Make a list of at least 8 eating and other habits which hold you from loosing weight. Write them down and rate every habit in the scale from 1 to 10 (where 1 is low influence on your weight loss, 10 is huge influence). Choose a few habits which have biggest influence, biggest number. Then you can focus on changing these two habits during 1 month for example. Good luck!

Thank you guys for the support very much appreciated.

Just before Christmas I went to my doctors to receive help and get referred to a weight management specialist as mentioned in my first entry. I know I need specialist help, as I have failed many of times in the past to do it myself. I knew even before I went to the doctors that they would want to take blood as being over weight I am at high risk of having diabetes and it also runs in my family so I know seriousness of this illness.

Anyways, today I wanted to check to see if my results have come back so I phoned the doctors for my blood test result and thankfully they came up okay for diabetes. However, they had advised me that my thyroid levels have come back borderline, which I am unsure what 'borderline' means . So long story short I have to go back in 6 weeks to have some more bloods test done.

I know that thyroids play a part in Weight & Metabolism and regulates Horomones and energy levels, so it could explain why I have gained weight within this month as usually I just maintain my weight. I think on the 25th January I am going to have a more intense conversation with my doctor about this.

Fingers crossed that my next set of results will be okay.

That's great that you are able to see a weight management specialist & will be monitored closely. It's good to know that you have professional support. I might ask my doctor for a referral soon. Cheers, Cate.

I would recommend it as they have advise me that I can speak to a dietitian and get information on a fitness plan and what I should be doing. Many thanks, Sophie

I read this morning an article on the bbc news site about new year resolutions. I only scan read it as that kind of article usually annoys me (and one of the subjects did lol) but there was a guy who took up yoga last year. I'm not saying dash down to your local yoga class lol, but in the article he did say, "Don't just make a resolution for the sake of doing it, make sure you have some passion before setting out". I think this is hugely transferable to what we're doing. If you can turn losing weight, through whatever means you're doing it, into a passion it's going to be a lot easier and a you're probably going to be more likely to succeed :)

Welcome to the forum btw

Stan is right. I took up bushwalking with a group but had to give that up as carrying a pack hurt my back & then I took up Tai Chi, which I loved & then also golf, which I still play & love. The tai chi teacher changed the day of lessons & it clashed with golf so I reluctantly gave up tai chi. It's excellent. It's gentle but also is good for stretching & suppleness. Try something new. You may change a few times before you find what inspires you to move. It may be walking or swimming, but there is something that you will love. Do you have a Fitbit or a tracking device? Mine does make me move more.
Happy New Year hon :)

Don't lose hope and quick start your weight loss program unless you achieved your goal.

Slow and steady wins the race – Aesop

I am not looking for any quick fixes to lose weight as I know very well from experience fad diets don’t work as a long term. I have been reading up on fad diets I know the vast majority of people that do Fad diets only want a fast action weight loss probably ideal for their summer body.

http://www.upmc.com/patients-visitors/education/nutrition/pages/fad-diets.aspx

High-protein diets - These diets propose that you eat large quantities of protein (meat, eggs, etc.) to lose weight and build muscle. Regular physical activity and weight training build muscle strength, not eating large quantities of protein. This type of diet can actually be dangerous. If you exceed the amount of protein your body needs daily, you put a strain on your liver and kidneys. The early weight lost with this diet is usually due to water loss, not fat loss.

Liquid diets - Liquid diets cut out substances that may be beneficial to the body. For example, phytochemicals (FY-toe-KEM-uh-kals) are plant substances (found in vegetables and fruits) believed to protect against disease. In addition, the effects of a liquid diet may be only temporary. Once you return to eating regular foods, you usually put the pounds right back on.

Juice or broth fasts - Some dieters try to lose weight by drinking only juice and/or broth for a period of time. Fasting (not eating solid food) for a long period of time can lead to dizziness and fatigue. In addition, your body reacts to starvation by lowering your metabolic rate (the rate at which your body burns calories). This means your body is burning fewer calories.

Given this information I feel that I need to make slow and small changes to help get in the routine and increase to over time. I am not looking for a diet I am looking for a healthier lifestyle and it is important for my health that I commit to this.

Step 1 - I am refusing to use the word diet as I personally feel that it is a negative word and it’s not a long term fix, I want to remain positive and motivated throughout. Therefore, I have decided I want to live a healthier lifestyle so that I can prepare myself mentally for this long term goal.

Step 2 - Cut Back on Sugars and Starches these are the foods that stimulate secretion of insulin the most. When insulin goes down, fat has an easier time getting out of the fat stores and the body starts burning fats instead of carbs.

Step 3 – Go to the gym, start with basic warm ups until I get comfortable with it. Go for 30 minutes and each week increase my time whether it will be 5 minutes or up to 1 hour.

Step 4 – Decrease food portion but ensuring that I get plenty of vitamins, protein, Omega -3 etc.

Step 5 – Remain positive – life will throw me curve balls so it is important to remain positive and mentally prepare myself to ensure that I will continue on this healthy lifestyle path.

Step 6- Along my journey I am going to continue to review my life style to ensure that I am living as healthy as I can psychically and mentally. Make adjustments to my plan when required and take receive personal help to assist me with this.

I constantly review what I'm doing & that's all a part of learning what's right for you. Your 6 steps seem very reasonable & sound Wheeles02.

Agree with your steps and you opinion of fad diets. I wouldn't necessarily class high-protein/low-carb diets as fad diets because they can be done healthily in the long run and help a lot for some people. But I'll admit that many people do them badly - as with anything - and of course they're not a good fit for everyone.

Planning to evaluate and adapt your process as needed is probably the best thing anyone can do. Life never turns out quite like we think it will so you've got to be flexible to stay ahead.
