My good days, my bad days, my random thoughts

So tonight sucked. Hard. Tonight was my first increase in running time. 2 minutes running, 1 minute walking, repeated 10x.

I can sum it up in one word: disaster.

My tendon/calf area -- KILLING me. My shin splints -- returned. My left hip -- felt like I dislocated it. WTF? I stretched my ass off before going knowing that I was going to be doubling what I'd been doing thus far. End result was me having to stop the running half way through and walk the rest. This happened before when I forgot to stretch (but not nearly as bad) so I'm going to chalk this one up to a fragile body and try again Friday. If that fails similarly I will have to re-think things. I'm really bummed out about this right now. Flying high earlier in the day and then crashed in the course of a half hour.

Today's totals:
Cal: 2347
Fat: 48 (19%)
Carbs: 346 (54%)
Protein: 152 (27%)

Tomorrow is going to blow. I have to attend a trade show that is a day-long event. I don't know how I'm going to get in my regular meals or if I'll be able to at all. Then I'm having a couple beers with a buddy after that. Tomorrow is going to take some finesse to get right.

That really sucks ! ;(
Have you tried icing it? Usually helps...
I had similar problem when I was starting out but it was due to not appropriate running shoes (lack of cushoning). Just a thought ;)
Anyway I hope it will pass soon!
Take care :)

Hey man, bummer on the running injuries.

I realized about a year ago that I basically cannot run on a consistent basis due to "bad form." My feet naturally point outwards more than most people which from my research appears to be why I would get such horrible shin splints when I ran for any length of time. I mean, the pain was debilitating when I had it, I could barely walk for almost a week at one point. Now, I'm forced to stick with ellipticals and bikes. Kind of shitty because I have to have a gym to get my cardio, but...just rollin with the punches. Peace & heal fast. -Marcus

I iced it as soon as I got home. It helped with the pain at the time, it seemed. And I'm pretty sure it's not the fault of the shoe. It could be related to uyis11's problem. I've had numerous lower body injuries from sports in my younger years and I don't know if there's some sort of compensation going on leading to bad form that's f'ing things up. I'll give it another go this week and if it still sucks I'll see my doctor.

In the meantime I'm just going to bump my walk time up since I can do that with little strain.

As for yesterday's diet, not great. The food at the trade show was amazing and while I think I may've slightly overdid it, I did stop myself from finishing my plate when I realized it. I'd wager I ended the day around 3000 calories. I haven't figured out how to put all of what I had into FitDay yet.

Today I'll be back on track diet-wise.

I'm thinking about starting to weigh myself daily just to dump the numbers into a spreadsheet and have it dynamically adjust the graph as you enter each new day. My scale measures body fat as well so I'll probably include that. I think it'd be neat to see the graph take shape over time.

If anyone is interested in that let me know and when I complete it I will post it up here. I could also do one without the body fat portion of it for those without the means to track it.

Hey, Im in for this. Its a great idea.

I'd wager I ended the day around 3000 calories

thats a little high, but it is ok to have a cheat day. Just make sure that tomorrow you control you calories. Congrats on the weight loss, becareful Im right behind you by 3 pounds ;)

I've had numerous lower body injuries

Take it easy. I know what you are going trough. I have an artifical leg and a bad knee to boot. So running can be precarious for me too. Are you able to to a light jog instead of a full run? Are you running on a treadmill or outside? I have just gotten to the point where I can run for 30 mins but I keep it moderate so I dont kill my leg.

Just remember pushing to hard and hurting yourself will only set you back in the long run. You are doing great Fish! Keep going.

Yesterday was an unexpectedly busy day and I didn't get in all the food I wanted, but after the day prior that's probably a good thing. I didn't run either but I did manage to get in a half hour walk and my end-of-day totals look something like:

Cal: 1967
Fat: 39 (19%)
Carbs: 305 (58%)
Protein: 109 (23%)

My leg is still buggered so I decided to take the rest of the week off from running. But I will continue with the walking and I won't take Sunday off as a rest day.

Coffeebro: I'm doing an in-between light jog and run and it's outside on the sidewalk and side roads. I am doing it on paved surfaces because that is what I will be running on when/if I do the 8-mile fundraiser in September. Otherwise, I'd just be doing regular walking or ellipse machines at the gym... if I ever made it there. :D

Things are looking good for my weigh-in Monday. I'm currently down from 205.7 and I just need to not bugger it up between now and Monday morning.

I'd wager I ended the day around 3000 calories.

Don't sweat it. I think it's probably good to give your body a mix-up every now and again. I probably consumed 4000 calories on Friday with all the drinks/other dumb drunken bullshit I got myself into. Just gotta shake it off and keep on truckin'

Today was busy as hell again and I definitely under-ate, especially considering the amount of walking I ended up doing. I haven't got it all plugged into FitDay yet but I think I'm probably ending the day between 1800-1900.

I tallied up a cool hour and a half of walking today and actually ended up getting a sun burn to boot.

Tomorrow is weigh-in and I feel good going into it. My Excel numbers look good. I'm still not sure if I should be updating my ticker with my 7-day running average or whatever Monday happens to be. I think I'll continue with that day's numbers just to stay consistent.

I also think I might give the run another shot tomorrow. It's been rested. So if I can squeeze that in, I will.

Thanks for checking in, littlekeylime. I'm OH SO CLOSE! 1.3 lbs shy of 200. I still have one week to reach that 200 (or less) by my birthday. Keeping close tabs on the diet and making sure I get out for my regular exercise, that should be achievable.

I've had a couple high 200.x weigh-ins throughout the week. But as expected, day-to-day weight fluctuates and the next day I'm back up to 201s. Hopefully this week I can put together a couple days of 200.x and start to make that consistent. That will be nice.

So I'm having some issues getting Excel/OpenOffice to do some things that I want them to do. They're doing MOST of what I want, but my nice-to-haves have not yet worked out. I could probably put together a website where you could enter the data and have it track changes and generate charts accordingly. So I'm tossing that around now. We'll see...

We've got a couple rainy days here by the looks of it. So walking might suck (more).

Ah well, nonetheless, a new week has begun. I'm excited and eager to hit that short-term goal!

Yeah, short term is right! You'll be there by your birthday. Do you have music when you walk? I couldn't get through my workouts without music. I like hard rock mostly for motivation. I get tired and then a really good song comes up and it gives me renewed energy...thought that might help on your walks...?

Thanks for the suggestion, but most definitely music is a necessity for me.

I have almost filled my 30GB iPod. Last three albums to get me through a walk, I believe: Tool; Aenima, Clutch; Elephant Riders and Raconteurs; Consolers of the Lonely.

I started with some of my more mellow Jack Johnson, Grant Lee Phillips and Joe Purdy sort of music but it's just not exercising music. I quickly realized I needed to kick it up a bit.

I should've known you already knew such a basic tip. Its amazing how music can help, isn't it? I'd love to get an ipod, but have no idea what to get. Suggestions for a beginner?

Depends what you want out of your player. There are a tonne of manufacturers out there... some players have expandable memory, FM tuners and other features that the iPod doesn't have.

If you want just a bare-bones simple music player you can grab an iPod Shuffle for probably $50CDN. That would hold about 250 songs at 4MB/song. It just plays mp3s. No display, no frills.

Thanks! I don't need frills, just a compact way to listen to music on the go. Most of what I found on amazon was really expensive. I can afford the cheaper version. I think expandable memory would be good though. Thanks for the tip!

Enjoy your walk tonight!

I still have one week to reach that 200 (or less) by my birthday.

LOL Im going for 200 by May 19th, birthday, too. Ive got 7 more pounds to go. Im going to get an MP3 player for my birthday to help distract me from the time. Do you ever cover up the display on the machines so you dont stare at the time while you are working out? I hate it when I do that. Time goes way slower.

Oh, I also forgot to note something...

I'm no longer clinically obese!

I hit a BMI of <30 earlier in the week but I wanted to make sure I made it to a weigh-in before getting excited. So I'll call it official now.

As for the display, last time I was in a gym I don't think I had the iPod so I haven't had to avoid that distraction yet, and I chuck it in my pocket when I'm running/walking. Though I imagine that I would have to do the same if I were exercising in a stationary manner like that. I could easily see myself just blank staring into it...

First of all- yay for the under 30 bmi! I have a ways to go. Sucky. And I hafta throw some music at ya- BobaFlex. AMAZING. Thats the band I use to finish up my cardio.(little late for this post, lol  )
Anyway, you are totally kicking ass on the weight loss, congrats :)
