Okay, so i'm 5 ft tall and i weigh about 230. Im unsure of my exact weight, im in the process of getting a set of scales. My goal is to get back to my pre child weight of about 175. I dont have an exact date to lose it, i just want to lose it! Ive been counting my calories and walking a mile each day for a couple of days mow. I have also started drinking more water and less soda. I have a dr pepper addiction so i havent cut them out completly but ive made a big improvement. My real problem is i never eat breakfast or lunch. I only eat at dinner and then snacks at night time. Any advice is greatly appreciated!!

BMI is a simple Height to weight ratio used by some to determine if you are a healthy weight, this is not the best method but it is the most common. BMR - Your basal metabolic rate is defined as the rate at which your body uses energy when you are resting in order to keep vital functions going such as breathing. So if your BMR is 1500 calories then this is how many calories your burn just to maintain basic life functions before adding in exercise etc.

Welcome Amber! I think drinking more water and less (or no) soda can only be a good thing, just like walking more. Do you know how many calories (approximately) you eat right now and how those are divided up between meals/snacks/drinks? Knowing where you are now can really help finding areas that would be easy to improve. Is there a reason why you only eat dinner? And do you snack later because you get hungry or just out of habit?

Good luck on your journey, we´ll be here to cheer you on!

Welcome to the forum Amber. I agree that drinking more water is a good start & breaking up your food by having even just a small breakfast & a small lunch would be a big improvement. Why do you not eat during the day?
You will find great support here in the forum. It's good to keep a diary & record your day so that we can share your triumphs & your problems.
Once again, a big welcome. Cheers, Cate.

I have no idea where I am with calories. I do snack more out of habit and boredom than i do because I'm hungry. I'm never really hungry until around dinner time. I've never been a breakfast eater. I snack sometimes around lunchtime but not often. Thanks for the support! I really need it!

Thanks! I'm gonna try to start eating a small breakfast and small lunch everyday. I'm just never really hungry until dinnertime. I'm not sure why.

Okay, so I'm calling this day 1. I didn't eat breakfast or lunch, but I'm having hamburgers and homemade fries for dinner. I've drank 2 can Dr peppers and like 4 bottles of water today. That's a BIG improvement. I'm gonna start having breakfast and lunch tomorrow. Wish me luck!

To add to what Tru already said...

BMI is your Body Mass Index. Simply put, it is a ratio (obtained through a formula using your height, weight and sex) that is a very generic way to estimate your overall physical health. It is not the most accurate, nor is it the most fair way to determine the actual health and shape of your body, but it is the most commonly used method (especially by medical professionals).

To give you an idea as to why you shouldn't take your BMI TOO seriously, allow me to use myself as an example. I am a 5' 7" male.

According to the BMI chart (which can be found all over the internet, but I will leave a link below), a "healthy" body weight where my BMI is in the "normal" range is between 146 - 153 lbs. I weighed that much when I was in 6th grade. And, I wasn't fat. In fact, when I was in high school I weighed around 210 lbs and was in really good shape. Even though I had little body fat and a good amount of muscle mass, I was considered "obese" according to the BMI chart. So, even though I was in good shape, the BMI chart had me labeled as being "obese." That is exactly why you shouldn't take your BMI too seriously. Use it as a guide and nothing more.

Anyway, welcome to the forum. This is a great place to start. Tons of people here with tons of advice and support to give.

Good luck!!!

If I knew how old you were I could calculate your BMR for you. Assuming your around 19 your BMR is 1848.2 calories a day. Eat 1800 for a week or more, than cut to 1500 calories a day. You may even cut to 1200 after a month or so. Exercise and do this and you will lose gobs of weight.

This.

I used to work in health research: cancer, diabetes, risk factors. Professionals haven't taken BMI seriously for over a decade. It's surprising that so many people trying to lose weight still use it. BMI was originally developed in the 1800s for descriptive statistical purposes only, not as a normative standard of what "healthy" should look like. It was only recently adopted for that by health authorities, and those same health authorities quickly realized that the measure was not very useful.

Body composition and overall fitness are a lot more important. The measures they look at now are things like Body Fat % (which some home scales can estimate, though inaccurately) and waist circumference (pants/dress size). If you're losing inches and you're losing fat and feeling better and gaining more energy, that's all that matters. The BMI isn't a big deal.

Day 2: I haven't had any soda today, but I've have a headache since about lunchtime. Could this be from the sudden stop of caffeine? I didn't eat breakfast, but I DID eat a burger with no bread just lettuce, onion, and ketchup for lunch. I had a couple handfuls of popcorn for a snack. (One out of each of my kids bowls. Lol) I had homemade biscuits and sausage gravy with a small side of hash browns for dinner. I didn't walk today because it was wet outside and chilly. Any suggestions on indoor excersises I can do? Maybe some that my toddlers can do with me? Also, what are some opinions on grapefruit juice? I heard it was good for dieting. Thanks for all the support you guys!
