muscle mass in relation to fat burn

hi im new to this forum. i have read a book called "the abs diet" which says that the more muscle mass you have the more calories you burn which means the more fat you lose. How does that work? I have been going to the gym lately, and i can feel the increase in my metabolism because i'm feeling hungry much more frequently. But the more often i feel hungry, the more i gotta eat right? cos if i don't eat when i'm hungry the muscles will be burnt up for energy. (is that true?) So how can i burn fat effectively by more muscle mass?

Oh and one more question : should cardio be done before workout? after workout? or should they be kept seperate? I do around 5 mins of cardio as a warm up, stretch, workout, and finish it with around 15 mins of cardio.

yes the more muscle you have the more calories you burn, it takes calories for muscles just to exsist, around 300cal/lbs a day i think. and yes when you feel hungry you NEED to eat, those hunger pains are your body telling you your hungry... if you dont your body will go into starvation mode, and you will start storing fat and your metabolism will slow down and like you said your body will start to catabolize.

it doesnt really matter, i do mine after my work out if i do them at the same time, i like having that extra energy for lifting.

One pound of fat burns 9 calories per hour; one pound of muscle burns 35 calories per hour (approximately). It's all a series of processes going on through your body - yes you're burning more, but so long as you're not eating more out of proportion, that's how you burn fat - basically, in simple terms.

I think if your goals are to gain muscle, then cardio should be done at a seperate time. But if they're for fatloss, then you may do it seperately or afterwards.

Increase the amount of muscle in your body. For every extra pound of muscle you put on, your body uses around 50 extra calories a day. In a recent study, researchers found that regular weight training boosts basal metabolic rate by about 15%. This is because muscle is ‘metabolically active’ and burns more calories than other body tissue even when you’re not moving.

i usualy do cardio before and after. sorta like a warm up and cool down ^_^ sometimes i even do it in the middle of weight training (during leg day) but for only 10 mins
