Motivation

What is your motivation?

I know I need and want to lose weight. I try to stay on track, but when I am hungry, sad, frustrated, bored, lonely, happy, hanging out with family and friends, or eating out at lunch at work, I find it very hard to stay motivated to stick to my plan.

So, my question is:

What is your motivation?

How do you stay motivated when the going gets rough?

TIA,
Tim

Think of this the next time you are running or in the gym

Somewhere a True Believer is training to kill you. He is training with minimal food or water, in austere conditions, training day and night. The only thing clean on him is his weapon and he made his own gear. He doesn't worry about what workout to do - his ruck weighs what it weighs, his runs end when the enemy stops chasing him. This True Believer is not concerned about 'how hard it is;' he knows either he wins or dies. He doesn't go home at 17:00, he is home.
He knows only The Cause.

Still want to quit?

Sorry, that doesn't even come close to doing it. I am looking for some positive encouragment not some bullshit scare tactic. The only reason some "True Believer" would be after me was if I had messed with him first.
Since I make it a habit of not messing with other people and letting them live their own lives then I have nothing to worry about.

If you dont want answers, dont ask questions. You didnt ask us to motivate you. You asked what motivated us. Sure my post was a little melodramatic and exagerated but I like it. I work hard to achieve my fitness goals. While I am not nessicarily doing squats in the gym thinking about killing people, providing for and protecting my wife and children is definately my number one motivation. I plan on being around as long as possible to be there for them and in the unlikely event anyone ever poses an immidiate threat to myself or them then may God have mercy on their soul. Because I will not.

Anyway off rant. Maybe this will help.

"Your good enough, your smart enough, and dog-gonnit. People like you."

I guess I was a little harsh. I appreciate that you want to be around to protect your wife and children I just wish that you and others would realize that the only reason someone else would subject them selves to voluntary self-torture that you described was if they thought it would protect themselves and their wife and children.
Have a little empathy and compassion for people who are oppressed and attacked by our government before you use them as some sort of bogeyman and a reason to support genocide.

And thanks for totally derailing a topic that I hoped would be people giving motivating stories of what keeps them going when times are tough.

MY motivation is wanting to join the army. When I jog I think about how much easier it will be. Currently I need to drop about 66-70pounds to hit about 26% body fat, which is low enough for the army to talk to me about joining.

My motivation. Pretty women.

There are other things, but nothing gets me more motivated then that.

Seeing results keeps me motivated. Everytime I see a pound lost I know I can lose another, and another, and another etc. until I reach my goal weight. So far it has been working well and I've run into no hard times :).

NO problem. Didnt mean it to be political at all and there for I wont get into politics here. I stumbled upon the quote and liked it. To each his own. Not every one is motivated by "having abs like Brad Pitt" or "I want to look good when I go to the club/beach" while I would be a liar if I said vanity didnt play at least some part in my training, worrying about my love handles will motivate me about enough to not have desert. Or to order the single 1/4 pounder instead of the double. When I am running my last 200m sprint in an interval session. My abs are the farthest thing from my mind.

I guess I should post my motivation too. The main reason I want to lose weight is so I will be around long enough to watch my kids grow up. I have high blood pressure and I hope if I lose weight the numbers will come down.

I also want to lose weight so I can play with my kids and run around playing soccer or whatever they want.

The final reason is that we got a new diving board for our pool last year and when I installed it I saw a warning on the box that said the weight limit was 250 lbs. So, I can no longer jump off the diving board. So my final goal is to be able to safely jump off the diving board with out breaking the weight limit.

I can relate. I had the diving board thing last year. I was about 230 and I was a bit nervous about that.

I think motivation is a very personal thing. For me, I want to fit into one of my beautiful dance costumes I bought in Cairo without looking like a cow. Ok, so that's A motivation. What I really want, when you get down to the underlying issue, is to feel the energy and happiness I felt when I was thin. I want to feel good about myself again.

The emotional eating is just a killer issue, and one I share, especially after my recent move from CA (which I love) to WA (jury's still out). I've been pretty depressed since the move, and then injured my leg so I can't work out. I don't have any good replacements when you get the urge to eat, but if I come up with anything I'll let you know :)

Lots of things motivate me, and not all of them last. I suppose the main thing is just to feel like I can do things without being judged for the way I look.
