Motivation Foundations For Healthy Relations

I joined this forum this morning because I need the support and accountability of sharing my journey with others as I work towards my goals, and materialize my dreams.

I will give a more detailed description of my history at another point, if others are interested, but for now I will tell you all that I am a 21 year old female who has a rough history with body dissatisfaction, and am finally putting together all the pieces to have a healthy, happy, positive relationship with my body, to feel fit, healthy, strong, flexible, vibrant, confident, energetic, comfortable and proud of the skin I'm in.

It is my christmas wish this year to feel GREAT about my progress on the holiday, and ready to start the new year with a revived connection with my body, and a new attitude and outlook as I continue establishing healthy habits that will last me a lifetime.

One of my goals is to not focus on weight loss through this process, as I am doing well in my recovery from an eating disorder, and I am not currently over-weight. I can't deny that I am currently larger than I wish to be, and I know that my body would naturally settle at a smaller size if I were getting proper exercise and taking better care of myself. I have been gentle with myself for long enough now that I feel ready to take on a daily exercise routine without going overboard, and can put a focus on fitness for the sake of FEELING good in my body, and being healthy, rather than just caring about my appearance.

I also have a history of depression, especially as the winter months roll around, and I KNOW that I feel a zillion times better when I am exercising regularly, so establishing an exercise routine is not just for physical benefit, but for my all around happiness and well-being. I also have recently started treatment for ADD, (without the H), and know that exercising regularly helps with mental functioning and processing, and can really increase the positive effectiveness of medication.

So I have plenty of motivation to be hitting the gym, especially since I work at the local Y in child care, and get a free membership.

I want to set manageable goals for myself, so for now my goal is to get intentional exercise at least 30 minutes a day, at least five days a week, and to track my progress by logging my exercise on a sheet I will post on my fridge, and by posting here at the end of each day exactly what exercises I did and for how long.

I was about to go for a run before I started writing this, but I couldn't find my i-pod and running with nothing but my thoughts intimidates me, so instead decided to write this and then clean my apartment in order to a) find my i-pod, and b) have a more comfortable space to practice yoga and workout in. I consider my apartment an extension of my body, as when I am taking care of my body, I take better care of my space in general, and the other way around. It is the same skill set I am working on to keep up with daily maintenance for a organized apartment, and daily maintenance for a good feeling healthy body.

Thanks for reading, and best to you all in all of your personal goals as well!

Congratulations on making this decision...Too often we fail to realize that health and happiness are conscious decisions and that we are the only one's who are in control of both. :)

Winter months make me depressed too...So I moved to Florida...The natural light year round really helps...

Good to hear you are not focused on the scale. Winter just opens up a whole litany of different activities. You have to embrace the season.

Happy December everyone!

Thanks for your encouragement babymuscles and Habib, I am really looking forward to this winter. I use to snowboard quite frequently, and actually was an AASI certified instructor for three years but haven't been snowboarding the last three seasons, so this year I'm buying a pass to a mountain to get back into that, as its so important to have an outdoor activity in the winter time to enjoy.

Yesterday I did not do my exercise, other than walking from place to place and chasing after kids, because I had not slept well at all the night before and it was tough to motivate myself.

Today however, I made a point to start off my month right by sticking with my intentions, and I did a 30 minute "total body cardio workout" from one of my gaiam dvds. It felt great. I also swam in the pool with the kids at work for about 45 minutes, which can be quite a workout when they are climbing all over you and asking for rides.

I plan on doing some yin yoga streching before bed tonight as well, so overall I'd say it's been a successful day, and I'm thrilled to start reaping the benefits of daily exercise as I continue to follow through and expand my goals!

I just did a 30 minute "pilates lift & firm" workout, also from a gaiam dvd I have. Even though I was a bit soar from yesterday, I didn't find this particular workout challenging enough, so in the future I'll make sure to leave enough time to pair it with a cardio workout as well. I don't have time now for that, as I've gotta hop in the shower and go catch a movie, but it still satisfied my current goal and is certainly better than nothing!

Tomorrow I plan on doing a more rigorous exercise, or going over the 30minute minimum. After 2 weeks I'm going to raise the minimum to 40 minutes a day, and then after 2 weeks of that raise it to 50, after two weeks of that raise it to an hour, and then stay on the hour minumum for as long as possible, keeping it at 5 days a week. That's my plan at this point, but I'm open to changing the plan as needed, in order to keep my goals achievable. I will continue to vary my exercises to keep it interesting and balanced.
