Mma

I am looking to get into MMA, as a hobby.

I have watched it for years and I have messed around with it.

There are no MMA gyms near where I live so I am considering taking jiu-jitsu and kickboxing.

Is anyone into jiu-jitsu? And is this what I am looking for?

BJJ and Thai boxing were pretty standard arts that fighters took to get their MMA game down until MMA became its own style.

Muay Thai > Kickboxing if you can find a gym.
BJJ is an absolute necessity for anybody in MMA though. Even if your a striker, it's necessary. You have to learn how to escape back to your feet and how to defend on the ground. I loved BJJ.

Something you should look for is combo gyms. My gym teaches kickboxing, BJJ, Judo, and MMA.
Now Judo and BJJ combine really well. Watch Karo Parysian on youtube. He's amazing. He's a judo/bjj guy.

I agree, kickboxing is more for fitness standards and just basics. Muy Thai is actually more what you need for mma. Starting with the BJJ and Kickboxing is a good starting point for mma though. I am starting BJJ pretty soon myself at Knuckle UP, and then hopefully progressing to Muy Thai. Good luck with mma.

Many old school martial arts schools are switching to training for MMA competition as that's where the demand is. If there are any low-level MMA competitions in your region, see where the fighters are training out of and start there.

Im starting MT and BJJ next week. Same school teaches both, so for one outrageous price I can participate in both.
