Hey everyone.
I'm MissMeadow and I'm an eighteen-year-old girl from Ontario, Canada. I came to this website obviously because I want to lose weight! I've been overweight for about five years now and it's really hindered every aspect of my life. It's not so much that I'm so overweight that I'm physically unable to do things, it's just that it's hard on my self-esteem. I've been thinking about losing weight for a long time but it's just never happened. Now that I'm older, though, I hope to look at it a little more rationally and achieve my goals. So! Here I go!
I stole these questions from one of the posts describing the diaries. I'm just using them so that you guys can get to know me a bit better, if you care to. I hope you do! I'd love to get to know all of you, too.
1. What is your current height and weight?
I currently weigh 159 pounds and I'm 5'3"ish. Before my most recent health scare (which turned out to be only a really nasty case of anxiety), I weighed about 153 pounds. This was four months ago. So I've gained a bit of weight, but not a devastating amount. I just didn't work out at all during the whole "scare".
2. If you were at an ideal weight now, what would that weight be?
I think that an ideal weight for me would be between 125 - 130 pounds, but I've never been that weight before, so I don't actually know. I'll just have to see what happens!
3. At what weight would you like to be at four months from now?
Four months from now, I'd like to weigh 133 pounds.
4. Why do you want to lose weight?
Point-blank, I just want to look better. I know that's not really a great reason but that's the reason. Also, I work for a company that has a garden center/strawberry picking/landscaping etc. in the spring/summer and I know that losing some weight would definitely help me to do my job better. Really, though, I just want to look and feel more attractive. I know the importance of "feeling" attractive at any size, but really, that doesn't work for me.
5. Do you want to lose weight for a specific life event such as wedding or reunion? If so, when is that event?
Not really. It would be cool to lose weight for spring prom, I guess, but just losing weight for life in general is what I want.
6. What obstacles could get between you and your weight loss goals?
Oh, lots of things. People tell me that I can't do it, OR they put way too much pressure on and I just cave. The temptation of tasty food is a problem in itself, of course. Also, I'm trying to get good grades this year to get into university in the fall, so I might not be able to work out as much as I'd like.
7. Why do you think that you now have a weight problem?
It's complicated. I guess, simply, I felt sad maybe one day, so I ate after school to comfort me, and it just kept going and going for years. The problem is that food = comfort, which makes comfort = overeating, and overeating = gaining weight, gaining weight = feeling bad, which leads to more need for comfort so more need for food and so on! When I've tried to lose weight in the past, one little mistake could make me sad enough to overeat again, causing the cycle to just keep going. I guess I have very perfectionistic thoughts but my actions don't really follow.
8. What lifestyle changes do you think would help you lose weight?
Definitely exercising more, eating less junk food and eating more healthy food would help! That's a lot harder than it seems, though. I guess what would really help is not being so terrified of making mistakes. If I just let little mistakes happen, I wouldn't need to eat to comfort myself and cause that vicious cycle all over again.
9. Have you lost weight in the past? If so, what has worked in the past to help you lose weight?
I haven't gotten anywhere near my goal weight, but I was down to 148 (that's losing 5 pounds from my previous 153) in the summer. What helped me lose weight was basically just going for walks, going to the gym, and going for bike rides. I had to force myself to go at first but after I while I really started to like it, and the weight was just coming off. Feeling better made me naturally want to eat healthier, too.
10. Why do you believe that you did not lose weight or you gained the weight back?
I really lost motivation after my Week 2 weigh-in. I had worked especially hard and the scale didn't budge, so I gave up.
11. What, if anything, has not worked for you in the past in helping you to lose weight? Why do you think it did not work?
Weighing myself every week did not help at all, because sometimes there wasn't enough of a loss to notice in one week, and I got very discouraged.
12. Would you try writing down all food and drink consumed for a given period of time?
Yeah, I've done that before. I'm going to try it again.
13. Do you cook at home often? If so, what do you cook?
My mom does the cooking. She cooks gross things like sausages and potatoes. I'm a big fan of salmon and rice. I should start cooking that for myself.
14. How often do you go out to eat? Where do you go?
It depends on what I'm doing. If my mom isn't home or is just making gross food, I'll often go to Subway. I've been to Subway as much as four times a week before, and I always get a footlong sub. Bad.
15. What are your three favorite foods?
I love hashbrown casserole, potato soup, and macaroni and cheese.
16. What are your three favorite restaurants?
Subway and a few local non-chain restaurants.
17. What are three things you can do differently when it comes to food?
I know about nutrition already. What I need to do is just make the food that I know is healthy. My mom often complains that I'm taking up too much room in the kitchen but I should not let myself be bossed around so much by her. I mean, this is important. Also, I should not go to Subway nearly so much and I should get up earlier so I can pack my own lunch and not by the gross food at the caf at my school.
18. If you woke up tomorrow and your body was exactly the way you want it, what would be different?
This is the problem. I've been thinking of this and I used to know, back when I was younger, when I used to have this I-have-to-be-skinny-to-be-successful mentality... I don't know. I guess I've just grown up and I don't really think that anymore, but for some reason, I do still want to lose weight. I guess maybe I'd have more confidence. [/weak answer]
19. Do you eat when you are not hungry?
Yup.
20. Do you binge eat (large amounts at a time)?
I really used to. I don't so much anymore.
21. Do you hide your food or eat in secret?
Again, I used to a lot. I still do sometimes but not so much anymore.
22. Do you eat when you are sad, nervous, or depressed?
Oddly, no. I tend to eat a lot less when I'm feeling any of these things.
23. Do you eat as a reward?
Not really. I don't usually find anything worth rewarding.
24. Do you eat while watching TV or using the computer?
Sometimes. I try not to, though.
25. What do you normally eat for a meal?
Whatever's on the table. It varies but it's not usually all that nutrient-dense.
It's not complete crap but it could definitely use some improvement.
26. What type of snacks do you eat?
Garbage! Lots of chips and cookies.
27. In terms of exercise, what, if anything, are you currently doing?
I'm not doing anything right now. I'm going to start using my dad's elliptical trainer today.
28. Where do you go for exercise? A local public gym? School/work gym? Home?
I would go to the gym but I can't afford it this year. D: So I'm going to use the elliptical trainer at my dad's girlfriend's.
29. What, if anything, are your three favorite types of exercise?
Hiking, biking and...meh. I guess I like the elliptical trainer.
30. What is your daily/weekly/monthly/yearly motivation to move towards your goals?
I don't know! I guess I want to lose weight so that I don't have a chubby face for graduation pictures, and so that I can wear a cute little dress to spring prom, and so that I don't start university "fat".
31. Do you have rewards for certain goals?
I'll say if I lose 8 pounds a month, I'll treat myself to a 6-inch sub from Subway. I know it's not good to treat yourself to food, but whatever. It works for me. Also, I'll buy really nice new clothes.
What I Ate Today:
1 bowl of All-Bran Buds
1/2 glass of apple juice
1 big plate of Kraft Dinner (oh noes!)
1 glass of milk
1 pork cutlet
Small amount of rice
Small amount of corn
1 glass of milk
My Workout:
I worked out for 30 minutes on the elliptical trainer and did some stretches afterward. I took it pretty easy since this was my first time exercising in months but I got all the way through my planned 30 minutes!
I was surprised.
Goals For This Week:
I don't really have a weight loss goal for this week. It would be nice to lose some weight but it won't be the end of the world if I don't. Since it's my first time exercising in quite a while, I'm just going to try to get used to it and work up.
