Mississippi Bill

Have you heard about the bill floating around the Mississippi House of Reps that would prohibit restaurants from serving food to obese people?

I can't see how it would pass, but... wow.

Here's a .

Suddenly I'm interested in looking into the bills floating around in my own state government. >.<

Gotta love big brother...

I doubt it would pass, but stuff like this ends up being the result of people saying "oh why doesnt' the government do something about the obseity problem" -

be careful what you wish for...

it's not one meal in a restaurant that's the problem...

In my opinion, this is absurd to the extreme. It's not the resturant's fault for serving an obese person what they knew better than to order. The resturant is simply doing what it's there for, providing a meal for a hungry person, regardless of hungry person's weight. Obese people, imo, cannot blame a resturant for making them fat. They could have ordered a side salad instead of the onion rings. It's not rocket science. Some people, unfortunately, have a proclivity for blaming their problems on anyone but themselves.

Mississippi Anti-Fat Law - Outrageous...

Found this article on Diet.com; I think this is outrageous. You can sign the petition form here:

Here's the article

A trio of Mississippi lawmakers has rolled out pending legislation that would, in effect, bar obese people from dining at public restaurants.

With more than 30 percent of its population considered obese, Mississippi is always near the top of the annual “fattest states” list. But there is tremendous outrage over Mississippi House Bill 282 which is backed by Republicans W. T. Mayhall, Jr. and John Read, and Democrat Bobby Shows.

The measure would apply to any restaurant that holds a health department permit and has enclosed seating for five or more - a definition broad enough to cover almost every restaurant in the state, not just those that serve fast food. The bill does not spell out what penalties an eatery would face for violating the law.

“Any food establishment to which this section applies shall not be allowed to serve food to any person who is obese, based on criteria prescribed by the State Department of Health after consultation with the Mississippi Council on Obesity Prevention and Management,” the bill states.

The chance that the bill will pass is slim, however Diet.com wants to make sure your voice is heard so we’re creating a petition of opposition... and we want YOU to join the cause! All you have to do is fill out the form below and we’ll do the rest.

Diet.com medical director Dr. Robert Kushner, vice president of the Obesity Society, says, “I am outraged! Though I understand that the obesity epidemic has become serious enough that legislators are trying to see what role they can take to help out, I will never understand legislating discriminatory practices.

“Just like diabetes and heart disease, obesity is a disease and the last thing we want legislators doing is drafting bills that single out people with different afflictions. I can assure that our society will be responding to these legislators and letting them know that this will not be tolerated”

It will never go through, and would be extremely embarrassing to go out to eat and someone ask you to leave because you're too fat. But quite frankly I'm glad the press pushed it a good bit around here (I live in MS) because I think it got a lot of Mississippians thinking about how they look and that they need to do something to get healthy. I mean come on, we're the number one state for obesity. It's really sad.

What a bunch of garbage. And I always thought Mississippi was a red state who didn't like big government eh?

I am glad to see this is the kind of garbage we pay our elected officials to sit around and come up with. You only ever here the bad side of this wonderful state. I moved to Mississippi nearly twenty years ago and I love it. Yes, we are the fattest state in the country, but we are also the most benevolent. Why stop at banning the obese from restaraunts, how about certain areas of the grocery stores. Leave one isle for the obese that contains vegetables and rice cakes, if caught in the other areas offenders will be forced to spend 1 hour on the treadmill before they can leave the store. I LOVE YOU "BIG BROTHER"!!

Oh, one more thought, lets ban smokers from any place that sells tobacco products. DUH:rant:
