Message for steve...

Hey man whats up, i've been lookin around on this forum for a while and noticed, like everyone else, you obviously know what your talking about, so i was wondering if i could get some advice from you...

I've lost a lot of weight before back in 2003 by big calorie deficit and running. I was 220 at the time and in about 6 months i got down to 155-160 i looked great and felt great, even though that was a short time, well now im trying to do this again to get into the Navy (long story short i was in the delayed entry program at the beginning of 2005 and missed my shipdate at the end of 05 b/c of weight regulations due to my weight gain) at the beginning of last summer i started my diet and exercise again which in two months time showed results of a 60 pound loss and i was starting to look pretty good again...Great, untill i screwed up and got off my diet. Well this time around im trying again but the problem is i can't remember for the life of me what my diet was those last two times...this time i weigh 255-260, i started my diet on the first with a beginning weight of 270-275, so a loss of 20 so far, the thing is i know im undereating and by reading your posts thats a big problem, i roughly consume 950-1500 calories a day, now like i said i can't remember what i ate but i remember that was about how many calories i did have when i lost the weight the previous two times, my questions are:

why is my weight coming off so slowly this time? i weigh myself in the morning and if im lucky im at 255 the other day i was at about 258-262 im doing cardio and weight lifting at least for an hour a night.

what should i eat? i'm running out of things i can think of, i don't want to eat too much cuz it makes me feel slow and full and i don't like that feeling if im trying to loose weight, it feels like im not doing anything for my diet....

btw i know to loose weight for good or a healthy way is to loose around 2-3 pounds a week, i don't want to do that...i want to loose as much as possible as quick as possible so i can get back in the navy asap, b/c after i hit boot camp im not going to gain any weight like last time due to being in the service...i know its possible for me to do b/c i've done it im just a little confused this time...

Im not sure how much you can help but like i said i know you know what you're talking about and i hope you can offer some kind of advice, thanks in advance...

Look, I appreciate the kind words, I really do.

That said, you are starving yourself. And you keep telling yourself that you know that it is "OK" because you have done it before. But let me ask you this please. Each time you have starved yourself, where did it leave you at the end of the day?

From what I can tell, each time you do this, you have ended up heavier and fatter.

Obviously, something is not right. Most people tell you that when you starve yourself, you end up losing tons of muscle and that is what slows your metabolism down.

Regarding this, bigger people actually don't lose as much muscle as most people would suspect when starving themselves. And even when muscle is lost, that does not do TOO much in terms of slowing down your metabolism.

What happens though is the closer you get to your set-point weight, the more your endocrine system will work against the weight loss. It actually creates an atmosphere where your body will resist all weight loss efforts as much as possible. Most people give up at this point and when they start eating "regular" again, their bodies are primed for fat storage and weight gain, hence the fast regain and possible higher weights than where you started.

I could start throwing out specific recommendations, as well as a few other people that know what they are doing around here, but I really think you need to understand this first.
 
im not too much concerned about gaining the weight back seeing as i will be required to be at a certain weight being in the Navy, on top of that, once i get down to the highest weight possible to enlist again i will go through boot camp which will drop anything i want to loose off, after boot i plan on building up muscle so its a process im definetly going to go through and will not gain any fat back...

Seriously, I am not a fan of very rapid weight loss. That said, if you really want to do this, I would suggest following the Protein Sparing Modified Fast (PSMF).

I would hate for you to do it without buying the book so you could understand it.

from what i found when i googled that diet im almost doing it, with the exception that i do have some carbs and maybe a little more than 900 calories a day, everything i eat is protein rich and i replace a meal with a protein shake everyday....

im probably consuming close to 25 carbs a day if not a little more, is this too much? i know obviously its too much for the psmf diet but will it still work somewhat with some modifications?

No, and this is why I did not want to get into specifics without you reading the actual manual. You are not doing the refeeds, which is a major component of the diet for hormone regulation.
