Mental Toughness

I am a mental weakling when it comes to exercising. I'm pretty good at going after other things that I want in life and attacking them full force.

But when it comes to exercise, I find that I spend too much time dreading each set than just doing the damn thing. I have tried affirmations, some self motivation, and even some "don't be a lazy ass!" type comments. However, I still find myself falling back to my comfort zone of laziness.

I suppose it's important to mention that I just started a couple of weeks ago, and my workouts usually go to **** around mid way through. So lack of energy is an issue. I currently do all of my workouts first thing in the morning on an empty stomach. Should I add some food, or is there a way to continue with the empty stomach routine?

Are there other ways to boost mental prowess that I might break through? Does it get easier over time?

Thanks for any advice.

Want to live longer, live better, have more energy, attract more of the opposite sex and get laid way more often?

Motivational enough? Because it's all true.

Oh, I am a morning workout guy. The empty stomach idea is bad. Some people start with a cup of black coffee. For me, I'll have a small bowl of oatmeal or a banana. And a big glass of water.

You want carbs before your workout (banana, oatmeal, cream of wheat, bagle) then protien and fat afterwards (egg sandwich, yogurt). Going first thing in the morning works for some people, and not others. I get my best workouts in the afternoon, and worst in the morning.

Always eat before and after exercise tho, that should help keep you from crumbling halfway thru.

As for the mental toughness, you said it best, just go do the damn thing. It's tough to start out, I know (I did it twice, once for injury: see avatar), but as you get into better shape it gets easier and more fun.

Thanks for these replies. I agree with both of you. The other day I made a nice juice for myself before working out and my workout was exponentially better. Another things I was wondering about: twice a day workouts. For instance, upper in the morning and lower at night. That would give me some more complete rest days. Any experience with this?
