Meal Replacement Shakes?

What do you guys think of meal replacement shakes? Anyone use this as a way to lose weight? I was thinking about drinking them to replace breakfast and lunch. Since I don't have time to ever eat breakfast. Then have a healthy dinner later. As well as fruit and veggies as snacks.

Umm, wake up earlier.

I prefer whole foods. Shakes don't have any special powers to "make you lose weight."

I ahve tried them. And in a pinch once in a while I still will. But they end up leaving you very hungry and the sencable meal you are supposed to eat for dinner turns into a binge!

Those shakes always leave me hungry. Even with a ton of frozen fruit thrown in...yogurt...whatever. Balance is the best I've tried, but really I think an hour or so out from drinking one I'm hungrier than I started before I had it.

I've tried these as well but find that the body's urge to chew is very strong and you might still feel hungry simply because you want to "eat" because "drinking" doesn't satisfy you in the same way. I don't eat meat so I sometimes use a soy protein based shake but I keep the calories low and call it a snack.
That's my two cents for what it's worth!

Wow, I can really feel it . Just reading about the urge to eat and chew gives me a sort of craving.

I dont think you should replace your meals.
I do take hoodia but my main goal is just to overcome my snackings between meals and specially the midnight snack.

Maybe you could take those shakes as a replacement for snacks!

bye,
faraz

Shakes

I've never really thought much of the idea of skipping meals (even with a shake) as a way to lose weight. I think you'd be better off with some fruit and yogurt or cottage cheese. And doing it for 2 meals? No, that can't be healthy.

Here is the thing, the "power" of weight loss shakes lie in calorie control. If you replace two meals with a 250 calorie shake, then sure you can indulge in your normal over portioned American style dinner and maybe lose a little weight.

I agree with Steve, wake up earlier. You can make a hard boiled egg or two the night before, have a piece of whole wheat toast, and grab an apple. Much more satisfying compared to a slurry of artificial nutrients that is the meal replacement shake.

It's also worth mentioning that the majority of dieters who eat breakfast regularly keep the weight off in the long run. Eating in the morning is more satisfying than eating the same amount of calories any other time during the day.

I have never really gotten into the whole shake idea. If i'm in a huge hurry in the morning i grab a smoothie yogurt and a piece of fruit, but I really love my cereal in the morning with the fruit. I dont think i could replace breakfast as it's my most important meal.

I suggest waking up earlier as well. I know it's tough, I go to work at 6:30-7am mon-friday so i get up about 4 am just so i can have my morning workout, a nice breakfast, grab that banana/orange/apple on my way out to work for my midmorning snack. By lunch if i dont have something to actually eat i know i'd find myself at the snack machine, so i can't sub that out.

And with a very hungry hubby in the evening i could never replace that.

Maybe weekends, but then I find that if i dont eat a meal... I'll get bored and want to snack on chips instead of celery and carrots. I'm just not down with the meal replacement stuff.

If you dont have time in the morning i suggest getting everything ready. On thursday nights we go to a lil bar with some friends so i know i'm always rushing friday and only get about 6-7 hours of sleep so i do a quick 10-15 minute workout and have my cereal in a small container, the milk already measured and in a bottle, and the fruit cut up so i just pour the three together in a bowl and pooof breakfast is served!! Just a little hint I guess.. sometimes I find that if i make the breakfast/lunch the day before and label the storage bowl, then I have to eat that and dont try to reach for something different. Helps me sometimes.

Anyway good luck and see ya around!

I admit that I eat the meal replacement bars for breakfast. It was easy to do because I live in a dorm so I don't have a kitchen and I didn't want to go to the cafeteria where all those tater tots and pancakes were staring at me :p . I used the Zone bars cause they stuck with me and were actually pretty yummy. They would last me about 3 1/2 hours . The shakes always left me hungry. I wouldn't suggest doing it for 2 meals, though. Do some research and find out some low calorie foods that you like (you dont have to eat salad for the rest of your life).
