meal replacement bars and your body?

i had been eating 2-3 protein bars a day because im busy and on the go. I weight train 3 days a week so it helps me to get enough protein since I dont eat a lot of meat (dont like a lot of meat and the ones i do like im too pressed for time to cook). i read that one of the bars ive been eating has 10g or so of sugar alcohols and the others have like 4g. the first few weeks of eating them i had no problems but now i do. i feel bloated all the time and despite my strict routine of exercise and diet, i feel that certain body parts are getting bigger (ie stomach) while everything else is shrinking. ive went from 188lbs to 123lbs and yet my stomach is still the same size, big. im going to go see a doctor to make sure those protein bars havent messed up my stomach. i used to eat slimfast bars but they messed with me too. can eating the wrong foods actually cause you to gain a bigger midsection or at least keep you for making any significant decreases in it? are sugar alcohols bad for the body? or am i being paranoid and my stomach will be the last place i see the fat come off?

paranoid who knows...

try reading some of the stickied threads around the forum.. you've got much to learn.

Busy and on the go is a really lame excuse for relying on protein bars which most of them are no more nutritious than a snickers bar... A little preplanning on your week and you can have real meals with real food ready to go

Check the labels and see if they have Sucralose (or Splenda) in them. I used to eat those bars a lot, until I realized that a lot of them sneak in Sucralose, and I developed an intolerance to it. Basically, it's the same way you would feel if you had a lactose intolerance...It is varying levels of bloating, gassiness, maybe some issues in the pooping department. For me, it was so severe that I lost an extreme amount of fluid, couldn't move because of the pain, and almost passed out a few times. Not something I'd ever like to see happen again. Even if you don't have an intolerance, eating 3 of those things/day if they have sucralose or other sugar alcohols in them will make the bacteria in your gut thrive regardless, and create more gassiness/bloating.

Hope this provides some insight, I wish someone had told me before I found out the hard way!

Sugar alcohols are neither sugars nor alcohols. they are carbohydrates with a chemical structure that partially resembles sugar and partially resembles alcohol, but they don't contain ethanol as alcoholic beverages do. They are incompletely metabolized by the body, and consequently contribute fewer calories than most sugars. Because they are incompletely absorbed by the body they are fermented in the large intestine and if over consumed will drive GI disturbance. They are really one of the more healthy sugars that you can intake because they are lower in sugar content and and once absorbed by the bloodstream take little or no insulin to convert to usable energy.

Sucralose and other sugar substitutes get a bad reputation because most are combined with bulking agents which are the true culprits of most sources of distress. The only study that I have been able to find that actually proved any bad side effects from sucralose was a study indicating that sucralose was a sometimes trigger for migraine headaches in a small percentage of patients.
