MassGainer + Weight Training?

I calculated my BMI today and it was roughly around 19.5. The healthy range for BMI is 20 - 25... this either mean's I'm too tall or too skinny.

Height: 6'0
Weight: 135lbs.
Age: 19

I fluctuate between 130 - 140lbs.

I was considering a Mass Gainer, but only if I got some advice in increasing my weight. By taking MassGainer, it would mean that I would have to increase my weight training portion in my workout program. Currently, I'm training for a triathlon and rowing, so a vast portion of my workout is cardio, with only 3 days of weights.

Any advice?

You're most definately skinny. For 6 feet tall you should be much heavier.

Remember, a mass gainer is simply a calorie dense meal replacement (or I may be confused..). So ideally you'll be eating all those calories from real food than the mass gainer. For your heavy cardio based workouts, make sure you're getting lots of carb rich drinks throughout your workouts so you have a fuel source and don't accidentally resort to using the muscle as one.

Eat big, get big.

Pretty sure a member on this forum said that one a long time ago.

Weight Training 3 days a week is sufficient as long as your routine is good. How much weight are you looking to gain?

looking to get up to at least 150 lbs of lean muscle.

This is what I eat usually throughout the day:
Dawn:
- workout

BREAKFAST:
- a POUND of pasta or a POTFUL of oatmeal

Lunch:
- usually have a granola bar + fruit juice combo before the workout. no time because of school

Night:
- workout

Dinner:
- steak/chicken/shrimp + vegetables + rice
- protein shake with fruit, banana, peanut butter, granola, and milk

then my day usually repeats.
I already feel as if I'm getting enough calories throughout the day. My housemates always comment that I'm eating too much...

What are your two workouts? Is the dawn one cardio and the afternoon one lifting? You have 250+ posts, so I'm sure you know that ideally you should be getting 5-6 meals, and you only have 3. I guess you're decided on that, so I won't point it out, although I just did.

if your looking to gain 150 lbs of lean muscle, u should really split that up into smaller goals bro lol

good idea with the mass gainer though IMO. most skinny guys brag about how much they eat, but most of them cannot eat enough...which is what really matters. the mass gainer is an ez wway to add calories. go for it.

good luck with everything man. ^_^

You need to eat protein at every meal. Just eating pasta or oatmeal doesnt cut it.

Read the stickies in the nutrition section.

i do cardio in the dawn workout (run/swim)

and either cardio again or weights (row/weights)

and i meant get up to 150lbs in body weight with lean muscle.

I don't have time to eat 5 to 6 meals a day!!! I barely have enough time to make myself 3!!!

Don't sweat it; you really don't need to eat 6 meals a day. Hell, there are some people who eat 1 meal a day and lose body fat while gaining lean mass. The 6 meals a day thing is just dogma that doesn't have much benefit over any other eating pattern. If you don't have time to eat during the day and don't like eating breakfast, check out the warrior diet. Tonnes of people have seen amazing success on it and you only eat once a day.

A protein shake and a piece of fruit is all you need for one of the smaller of the 6 meals a day. No need to be a gourmet chef for each one. You definitely are very light for your size. I'm 6 ft, 167 lbs, small boned, 33" waist, have a good muscle base, and still considered quite slim. You're 40 lbs lighter than me at the same height.

Sounds like you might be doing too much cardio. Some believe that if you want to bulk (build muscle) you shouldn't do any cardio at all. Considering that you are training for a triathlon, I imagine that you wouldn't want to cut out all cardio. My advice would be to cut back for a while, while you bulk, then return to it.

When is the triathlon you are training for?
What does your weight training routine look like?

If you really don't have enough time, a weight gain shake may be your best bet. At least that way you'll be able to add a few hundred calories a day to your diet.

WOW i completely disagree with Limestix.

Fueling your body throughout the day is the only way to go imo.

I agree with wesrman 100%. Used to have my diet reversed and at most of my calories and carbs after 2 pm and would only eat 2, maybe 3 meals a day. Now, I eat 5-7 meals and really can feel the difference. Set the clock 15 minutes ealier and EAT that BIG breakfast. You NEED to eat like a machine with all the cardio that you are doing. You are NOT trying to lose weight but gain lean muscle AND endurance training; so EAT EAT EAT. Look at Michael Philpe's diet while he trained for the olympic.

Good luck man, one day you will wish that you had that high metabolism. Trust me.

thanks, you hit the nail on the head for that one.
Frankly, I don't think I have enough money in my wallet to buy myself a weight gainer.
I think maybe I'll invest in a huge box of granola bars and just eat one bar every half an hour throughout the day to keep it up... they're about 150 calories per bar.

Thanks guys, and ya, I probably will wish I still had my high metabolism in a couple of years eh...

actually, that brings about another question I had.

Does HIGH METABOLISM indicate BODY GROWTH? ... this is the idea I had when I was growing up from my parents... if that's the case, does that mean I can still grow bigger in terms of size and height?

Thanks guys.

And my triathlon is date Jan. 24th for a Swim Row Go. I've been at training for a couple weeks already... wish me luck!

So, you're running a triathlon in 12 days? In that case I wouldn't change my routine until after the event. Then, cut back on cardio and lift heavy.
